So it was always a mystery to me why they didn't just blow holes in eachothers stomaches with energy beams to just power up the good ol painful way.

Probably one of the most butchered scenes in the dub, really. Though to be fair Kai did make it a lot better.

Idk why you brought that up randomly anyway about japanese vs funimation dub, you don't like that dub that's cool, a lot of people do.

Now here is the issue. DBZ is one of the animes (along with Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and others that are less popular) that was very explicitly westernized in translation. The people in charge of the dubbing will acknowledge that they did this on purpose out of an idea of appealing to western audiences. So ultimately, the story is slightly derivative whether or not you like the new version more. So why post clips like that? For the same reason anyone cares about the manga. Because original characterization and internal consistency matter. A lot of people care to understand why characters do so-and-so and the derivative version (the anime in general, and the dubbing specifically) loses some of that and ultimately ends up being necessarily less consistent than the original source material. And since the issue of characterization comes up pretty often (e.g. in the previous page), it can be pretty damn important.

Unrelated but kind of related on the what a waste thing: + Show Spoiler + That's usually how I feel when I read a fantasy novel after a group of dirty mortals kills a Dragon or some godly person or creature that lives for eons. It's like, "fuck, you guys live 60-1000 years tops. And you just took out a creature that sleeps that in one sitting.. faggots."

Probably needed more heavy metal guitar riffs. The music is a matter that I'm pretty torn on because I really like a lot of the tracks from the dub, especially when listened to in isolation. The consensus of the hardcore fandom is mostly that the Bruce Faulconer (dub track) music is very good, but the problem with it is that it never knows when to stop having heavy metal guitar riffs when they aren't called for. I have a comparison of a clip to demonstrate my point. + Show Spoiler [dub] + + Show Spoiler [jap] + Skip to the part where Buu actually dies and you see the aftermath of the spirit bomb. The Japanese music, or perhaps non-music, is very much more appropriate. The dub music, while very good, suffers from terrible flow.

The first 30-something episodes were mostly weak. That was the retelling of the BoG and RoF storylines, and to be honest it was painful waiting week after week just to see something I've already seen before. For the most part I think the movie was slightly cleaner on both storylines, but I really appreciated the training scenes in Beerus' temple in DBS. The brief Vados and Champa moment was really neat too. After that was the tournament arc, which I think is the part we can really start judging DBS in and of itself at, rather than our disappointed expectations after seeing rehashing of previous material. I'd say that I judge DBS as of the tournament arc to be a faithful follow-up to DBZ. It had a lot of the spirit of the original and at the same time felt like its own story. It did start to diverge from DBZ, based on a few minor but IMO important plot points: Jaco, the Galaxy King (octopus dude), and all of the various rules and power structures of the gods seem to lead to something that is far removed from the explicitly Saiyan-centric world of DBZ. Saiyans are still at the center of the story, of course, but they just sort of become one race which has access to godly powers among others who also have that kind of power. A sort of "stepping into a larger world" moment. The Goku Black arc, I really like so far. The same way I felt that the King Piccolo and especially Piccolo Jr arc was when DB started to feel like DBZ, this is when DBS starts to feel like its own show. All of the little things from the previous arc start to take to the center of the story as the gods (and one particularly dangerous one) seem to be the center of this story and actors rather than just spectators. We'll see how the arc goes but I do like Goku Black and Zamas as villains. I also really appreciate the tie-in of this arc to the video games, especially DB Xenoverse, because I like to think of that game as part of the canon as it really looks like it could be. Plus I like the way they deal with GT in that game - as an alternate reality side effect of messing with time .In terms of quality, it's pretty decidedly average among the DB and DBZ series. Some of my favorite episodes of all the series are from DBS. So it has a lot of potential but it really depends on how this current arc ends, which is the best so far. I suppose asking that does sort of implicitly ask what I think of GT. It felt like a fan series that was just too derivative - it felt like it tried to be DBZ with some of the charm of DB, but all it was was an uninspiring follow-up that took no risks, brought nothing new to the table, and ended stupidly. Biggest complaint a lot of people have with DBS is that they simplified Goku and Vegeta too much and made them caricatures of themselves. Which is kind of true but it doesn't really bother me much because it's not all that bad. Gohan went full jobber which I think is utterly stupid - surely he must realize that battle is part of who he is, and he actually needs to polish his battle strength because of the dangers that the multiverse constantly flings in their general direction. They spent a lot more time on all of the wife characters (Chi-Chi, Bulma, 18, Videl), and I like how all of them turned out - Videl especially, who is probably the only gentle wife of all of them which is ironic considering how she was at first in DBZ. I'd like to see more of Piccolo but I suppose nothing yet has really called for his appearance.

With the manga I could at least blaze through it, less than 3 seconds per page, longer if I stopped to admire the mangaka's artwork, which is probably about the same time it took to draw it ![]() I find it interesting to note that in the manga, SSJ2 Trunks was almost as powerful as SSJ3 Goku. If that had been in the anime instead, then that would've made Trunks' capability more plausible.

Idk I never had a problem with it, obviously on any rewatches I just skip ahead . But if you don't have time for it the Manga is a good way to go!

Someone working at DBZ really needs to just spoil who the fuck Black is and we can just enjoy watching the anime and the fight scenes. One thing I do appreciate though is the lack of bullshit long-ass power-ups that used to be in the old DBZ series. I like that Goku and Trunks fought Black and Zamasu and the fight ended all in half an episode.
