I used to get upset about it. Now, I've just grown to accept and expect a "Vegeta gets brutally manhandled by the main villain" moment as a staple of every saga. It's become a trope.
I always thought they would bring in a new character to have the show based around. Like when Dragonball followed Goku around as a kid. Have another character be the main part of the story from start to beginning.

That was supposed to be the idea with DBZ and Gohan, but the fans loved Goku so much that Toriyama had to shift the focus back to him.
Toriyama said that after considering the character, he could not see Gohan being the main hero and being the next Goku. Which I agree with, but I can't agree with the character assassination he got in the Buu saga and beyond.
Goku is both the main character and a dumb, comic relief character. Gohan is too smart and serious to be the latter.
Btw, shouldn't baby Trunks and Goten be older by now? Wasn't Gohan in high school/college during the Buu saga and they were already 3-4 yrs old by then?

I think they were 8 and 7 respectively during Buu saga. But I don't think a lot of time has passed since the Buu saga because iirc Goku mentioned during a DB Super episode (or was it a manga chapter?) that Buu was just recently reborn as Uub.

I actually like Gohan's character how it is now. He's never really been a fighter. I disliked kid/teen gohan, but he became an awesome character in the great sayaiman saga and in general I like him a lot more as an adult then before. Highschool + he is a cool character.

Well, enough time has passed for Gohan to graduate college, get a job, become known in his field, get married and have a kid. I was just thinking that Trunks and Goten should be roughly the same age that Gohan was during the Cell saga. Gohan was around 12 at the time, I think? Trunks was born or maybe just conceived towards the end of the Cell saga.

In the manga, Future Trunks says that it's been 10 years since the last time he saw Goku.

He's intelligent though and the Buu sage should have been a wake up call for him to keep training on the side at least. Instead he got owned by Freeza after which he said he'd start training again which he didn't. Gohan could've been a strong side character with Vegeta. Both of them putting up good fights but when it comes down to it still a bit weaker than Goku.
Edit: ages don't really make sense in db super. Emperor Pilaf and his crew were already there in the original dragonball when Goku was still a kid.

Throwaway line said by Mai to Pilaf at some point early in the series: "We finally get our hands on the Dragon Balls, and what do you wish for? Youth!"
In the manga, Goku was a slight bit less confident in Gohan's ability to rise up to the occasion. When they discussed who to bring to the tournament, he straight up said that Gohan lost his fighting skill.

While I'll be the first to admit that the saiyanman saga was great (only cringeworthy whenever he made himself look silly with the dance lol), I feel like Gohan's character was a stepdown by the time the buu saga ended. As an individual, sure, he's grown but his power level on the other hand. I was never a fan of Toriyama having Goku defeat every single villain out there and tried to make buu even more devious (well, he is devious but they knew by then what he was capable of) in order to shit on mystic gohan. He built up the power level only to have his flatter once he beat buu the first time. At least, during the cell saga, Gohan eventually beat Cell (don't counter Goku's sacrifice here) but ya :/
Then I'm watching super these days and I see vegeta get shit on in almost every fight they have. I thought that maybe, just maybe he'll be given an exception this time because it's his son's future world we're talking about but alas, seems like vegeta gets no love these days. So much for the proud Saiyan prince ~

The saddest fucking thing is the Resurrection F makes it look like completely out of shape Gohan who never fights is still stronger than any non-Vegeta/Goku Z-fighter because he can go Super Saiyan. Including Piccolo who never really stopped training.
Remember when Piccolo became completely irrelevant as a fighter? It made me very sad.

Oh I agree with you on Goku defeating pretty much every main villain. I wish they would let Vegeta defeat the big bad (or at least put up a good fight, rather then just Goku). I gave up hope on that ever happening though. I thought Revival of F might have been his chance, but no had to have Goku do it and now it seems they went back to DBZ, where Vegeta fights the big villain and gets his ass kicked to showcase how strong they are lol.

It seems that Vegeta's biggest wins were killing (and re-killing) Nappa, and killing occasional henchman like Pui Pui lol. I guess when he went Majin, he technically beat Goku, but meh.
Vegeta, sadly, is really only there to showcase the big bad. At one point, DBZ had a steadily growing cast with the Saiyans taking turns being the strongest and being roughly equal. Then they essentially simplified the series into having the only relevant characters being Vegeta, big bad and Goku. At the end of every arc, big bad's power level is between Vegeta's and Goku's.
