For Korra, you could say that she has been in training to master all three kinds of bending, and has less skill in "hand to hand combat". Or maybe it's just a small small plothole, which should not overshadow the great idea of this whole bending thing (controlling elements with martial arts). Or you could say that the new enemies are fighting with new styles of martial arts, which Korra has not seen because they may not be the optimal ways of bending fire, water, air, or earth, if they could actually bend.
In another forum I visit, someone is complaining about that fight and thinking the show isnt going in a good direction of it, so Ive been thinking of reasons.
Obviously, Mako and Bo Lin arent professional fighters, if anything, up close they are probably TERRIBLE lol.
As for Korra, I think there can be plenty of reasons. Korra I believe is 16, and she was maybe 3-5 years old when they had found her? So even if she trained a bunch she would maybe have 10-12 years of training. Those guys could easily be older and have trained for longer. Not only that. Korra is learning Fire Bending, Earth Bending, and Water Bending, plus trying Air Bending, and learning (or trying to learn) about the spiritual side of being an Avatar, probably had some lessons and a whole bunch of things.
So lets say those chi blockers are around 25 and started training around 18 (I feel like the starting age is probably younger, but for the sake of the conversation). Thats about 7 years of probably pure training. But not only training to chi block, they have probably learned how to fight benders specifically.
Korra on the other hand who might have 10 years, has never fought those type of fighters. While the Fighters probably knew much more about Korra then she knew about them. I think its fairly easy to see why she could of lost easily. Also obviously, its a fight that is supposed to legitimize the enemy, that was basically the whole episode, to set up the Equalist. Korra/Mako fight shows that these chi blockers can take them down fairly easily. Mako/Bo Lin vs Tesla Guy, shows a different type of enemy (not all chi blockers) and of course Amon. Its a bit like the "new style" of bending the pro benders do.
Oh yeah, good points! They could easily be 30 with 20 years of training, wayyy more than korra.

This isn't a bad thing, it's a great way to build tension. Korra got demolished in ep3, several times, by standard mooks. I'm sure one of the next couple of episodes is going to be along the lines of "I don't think I can do this" which is a stark contrast of her entire character.
'Against all odds' is very common in any form of movie or show, and it works every time. I think the fighting is going to go in a perfect direction.
I really just want to see the chi blockers try to jump Tenzin or Lin Bei Fong sometime this season and watch them get schooled hard. No way the top benders in Republic City don't know about chi blockers and how to fight them and it'd give Korra something else to work on after she masters airbending, which seems like the best element to fight chiblockers.
It's kind of like in TLA when we wanted to see Bumi school some dudes and when he did it was fuckin awesome.
Plus, Korra losing now will make her eventual avatar state even more epic. I do want to see a lot more of Lin Bei Fong though. You can't be related to Toph and not be unbelievably badass.
I really really really hope they mention what happened to Azula. By far my favorite character from TLA. I'm still hoping for some retarded plot twist where she was frozen in ice between the two series and makes a comeback.
Two things I thought about walking back from class:
Someone in this thread (I think) mentioned the idea of inter-tribal bending (i.e. hot-headed Waterbenders, lol); this was explored in TLA as well, as seen in Iroh
That and in the episode bitter work, Iroh talks about how the combination of elements in one person is what makes the avatar so powerful: the understanding of different bending techniques makes the bending techniques in one element stronger.
and his lightning redirection trick, as well as in the White Lotus of the original series - every one of them (Jeong Jeong, Iroh, Bumi) carried waterbender and airbender sensibilities (trickery and combat avoidance).
Also...this has probably occured to someone, but what if Amon's story was (partially) true and he was burned by Zuko, except instead of his family being upstanding citizens, they were criminals. Possible explanations for his parents deaths would be that they were accidental and the same thing that caused their deaths caused Amon's scarring.
I have to say that episode 3 was amazing. The fighting scenes were amazingly animated IMHO and the music is gorgeous. My first thought after hearing about this series was: ``Here we go, nick is trying juice every penny out of this franchise at this point." They have positively surprised me and I am looking forward to the rest of this series. One thing though, THEY HAVE TO PUT THE MOUTH FOAMING GUY AT LEAST ONCE SOMEWHERE.

You only miss the part where tarlok says the name of his task force and that he's planning a raid on a chi blocker group under a bookstore. 10 seconds or so.
I think this guys gonna become a villain once Korra sees the side of the equalists. But Korra can't work with the equalists so she'll probably be caught in a crossfire of sorts.
