Its not his lifes work. He has made many many things before ASOIAF, and continues to make more things during. He cant finish the story, that is why people are upset

Okay. His half-life's work. Who's to say it hasn't taken him the first half of his life to formulate the foundation of the series, the characters, deliberating with himself subconsciously who is who, and what plot points happen and why? All of those "other things before ASOIAF" have allowed him to gain the writing expertise and experience to realistically be able to create this series in the first place, rather than some freak incident that gets cranked out perfectly straight out of college. All of this is honestly hardly relevant. I am just advocating for fans to be thankful that they have such an amazing, epic series to read in their lifetime, which GRRM is in no way entitled to create at your bidding.

I partially agree with you and am not upset with GRRM: it is his life and work. However, it's not just his passion, it's his job. And if I were his publisher, I would be rather pissed off with him by now.
When was the last time you improved the life of GRRM for a change? .
Me and everybody in this thread improved his life by purchasing the books. Fans also make sure their friends know the series. Active foruns and fandom also made sure there would be a following for the show allowing him to sell it for more.

How about the fact that we buy his books and made him a fucking millionaire to start with. I don't feel entitled to have the book he writes but the bottom line if you work at a regular job and consistently miss deadlines set by yourself and your boss(His publishers) you would be fired without second thought.
No one is entitled to his work, but when you promise a product and then consistently fail at deadlines and make people wait year after year obviously people are going to get upset with you and they have every right to be. It's really not that much to ask for a book every year or two if your job is literally writing books. Dude makes a ton of money I feel 0 sympathy for him and this 'stress' his fans put on him.

For an author, his fans should be everything.
Fuck no. An author can write what the fuck he wants. The fans owe him nothing and he owes the fans nothing. You don't like something he writes? Well, fuck you. You don't like that he's not writing something? Who gives a shit about your opinion.

I completed the whole Malazan series (and The Black Company, as that's a long one too) this past year. Enjoyable to say the least.
I wonder whether this new delay is real or actually a smokescreen meant to surprise the fans with an earlier than expected (after many delays, haha!) release. Not so long ago I read a short interview with the Polish translator of the books, who said that he was asked to reserve plenty of free time in December 2015/January 2016. The book must've been close to finished at that time, otherwise why would they unnecessarily bother the translator? I truly hope Martin is playing with us this time.

That's not how the creative process works. People screwing rivets can't really compare their jobs to his.

Fans / Jailors
Depends which fans. The first couple pages on his blog are pretty supportive.
I dunno- though I have no interest in finishing the series, I'm sympathetic to his slow pace- probably because I'm afraid if I were a published author, I would have the same trouble. However, at least he's not planning on taking 17 years to write his follow up story like Tolkien.
Some authors are quite quick at writing- Brandon Sanderson... or I think Kevin J Anderson pumps out two books a year. George, I don't think, has ever been that sort of author as even at his fastest he was writing a book every two years... and really that was only two of the six books. I doubt A Game Of Thrones, the novel, was written in two years.

GRRM isnt winning any awards for his prose. If he had a plot and something to work towards, he could make progress regardless.
Clearly he doesn't have the plot. Or rather, he's not satisfied with how he currently has to tie up 30 unresolved storylines in an amazing finale that will please everyone. It's not easy.
Just started catching up on the show, I was pretty hyped the first 2 seasons but never started the 3rd, which was good the 4th wasn't as bad as I was expecting, just starting the 5th. The changes from the book are a nice surprise and actually build a lot more tension for me then I thought it would.
With season 6 being released for Winds of Winter, is anyone hesitant to not watch? Personally I think the show has gotten some things better (Arya/hound) But the Boring Daenerys/King's landing stuff is making me hesitate to keep watching the 5th season.
For the writing stuff above, an Author has all the right in the world to take as long as they want. It's their book not ours. If you think asoiaf is personal to you it's 10x more so for George. I am fine waiting, hell I have been waiting years for book 3 of king killer Chronicles. I would rather an author take time and make their work the way they want it. If it was rushed out and sucked you would hate yourself for wishing it so.
I've been toying with the idea of finding a rock to hide under between s6 and b6. I'm just enough of a recluse that I bet I could do it short of the major death and transfiguration events that trigger a huge reaction. Not sure if there is a strong point to it though. There will be no hiding from s7+ until b7. It also looks a bit like s6 will be a mix of things that are still not spoilers to readers (Iron Islands) and things now diverging to the point of only broad stroke similarity between GoT and ASoIaF.
The unfortunate primary source of that extra tension you are noticing is the more contrived nature of events in the show. It works until you think the events through. At that point you lose interest in the plot and can't escape some sense of boredom, as you also mentioned. To momentarily don the hat of a long dead minor character: Contrived shocks and surprise are the dramatic iron to a good plot's steel. Hard enough, but brittle.
The newly released trailer had two things that might be worth discussing with book knowledge.
Firstly, I think I saw a shot of the kingsmoot, but not sure. There were a couple of shots of Theon, but not enough context to make sense of, but no shots of Yara at all insofar as I could see.
Secondly, there's a very brief shot of a guy wearing Tagaryen armor wielding 2 swords: flashback to the Tower of Joy? Or (f)Aegon?

Well I think Jon Snow coming back is almost confirmed from the trailer.
We will probably see quite a few spoilers from the next season. But since it deviates from the books in many instances there will always be some doubt remaining, making these spoilers not much worse than theories you read on the web.
Went through the video in slow motion to see what will happen. Some major spoilers in the spoiler below. I'll ignore most of the mundane scenes and get to the meat of it.
Lancel and the Sparrows threaten Cersei, but she pushes back with Robert Strong at her back. Jaime will return to Kings Landing and has vowed vengeance with Cersei. Cersei and Jaime make out. I guess they're really going to veer from the books on this one and it looks like Jaime will stay in Kings Landing with probably a brother and sister team-up to defeat the Sparrows. Although in one of the last scenes, a group of soldiers in shining silver face down the sparrows at the top of steps and there's a horse-rider up near the high sparrow that could be Jaime. He may side with the Sparrows.
Jorah and Daario find Daenerys's dropped ring. She appears to be a slave walking in a new Dothraki horde as they pass underneath a horse statue. Maybe they're taking her back to Vaes Dothrak.
Iron Born look like they're going to have their Kingsmoot, Euron must win. In another scene, Theon is with a soldier and a couple hounds, but something approaches. In the next scene, Theon gets "drowned" by Aeron with an Ironborn looking on. So I'm thinking Theon is found by the Boltons again, but then the Ironborn save him and give him a rebirth and a chance to claim the throne away from his uncle. I believe he will make it home.
Waif is going to smack down Arya with a weapon for some reason. Arya will probably do the Cat of the Canals for awhile as it looks like she's going to run and jump around, but it could be someone else. Arya might also do some warging with her white eyes, but that could just be from being blind.
Nights Watchman hammers down a door with Thorne and another watching. Most likely they are going to arrest/kill someone important who is hiding behind that door. Could be Davos and/or Melissandra and could be linked to the final scene where Davos grabs longclaw, standing over Jon's body. He draws the sword with at least 4 Night Watch presumably going to battle him. Ghost appears to be dead at the head of Jon's body, but could just be sleeping there and they got cheap on the CGI.
The wildlings led by Tormen Giantsbane will face-off against the Bolton army and it appears that they will be at a major disadvantage against a shield wall with spears. But then I think a resurrected Jon Snow will lead a group of horsemen to help them out.
Brienne still alive and killing soldiers in the snow. I think she may save Sansa who is running away from something in the snow terrified.
Dual wielding Targaryen fights two other soldiers. Possibly a flashback to Tower of Joy.
Bran is with the leader of the White Walkers, they do not seem to be enemies.
Melissandra will show her boobs. Asha (Yara) will make out with a naked woman.
