Like the previous episode, this had a couple of potentially really funny ideas, but then a weak followthrough. "Cartman thinks black people belong together" and "Cartman pretends to be gay for Kyle" could have led to some great stuff... but instead it was exactly as advertised. Cartman simply puts the black kids together and tells people he and Kyle are together. He doesn't give misguided racist excuses, he doesn't play off of any gay stereotypes... there just aren't any jokes beyond the concept. It just wasn't that funny. Sometimes I think Trey and Matt are dumb (in spite of their comedic genius) for throwing together shows in a week the way that they do. Look at what happens when they take more time, trying to make the most out of their good ideas and filtering out the ones that just don't work- you get the Book of Mormon and Team America. And when they rush it and don't use any quality control? You get 22 minutes of the kids going on ziplines and saying "this sucks". I don't really get why you watch South Park if you think that. That kind of taking the concept and expanding on it without making super obveous jokes and coming to crazy conclusions and lessons is what along with uncompromising humor that goes after everyone and everything is what makes South Park great. What, was Cartman suposed to go make a couple anal and oral sex jokes or sending Token and his girlfriend to cotton fields or KFC so your sense of humor could be satisfied? Anyway, loved this episode, best this season in my opinion, but I might be bias since I am a sucker for Cartman centered stuff.

Loved the music montages, especially the part where cartman breaks in and read their letters. Loved when they showed him glued to the window spying on the girls, when he beat up his cupid, and the broken-cupid creepy self-conversation. Also the convincing love confessions....oh, and also when he was crying and it zoomed out and Butter was right next to him. Cartman is a great character lol. edit: although, now that I think about it, Cartman wins or seemingly wins most of his diabolical plans. Yet he always loses out in the end (see: easter egg episode). This week was a bit different.

I kinda wanted to see Kyle come and beat the shit out of Cartmen at the end too, and I don't understand why the makers are trying to "redeem" Cartmen (making him jewish, hooking people up, etc.). I do like how the creators have started focusing the episodes around characters as opposed to just stories, which is probably the direction you have to go after a while. Either way, it let's us see more and more what the characters are like. So, overall I recommend this episode. Cartman isn't redeeming, he just do this because he's racist and a little cupid tells him to do it. AKA he's fucked up in the head, and I don't think this is redemption.

The whole reason he wanted them together was a misguided racist excuse... You don't need to be explicitly racist about the skin colour when you're being explicitly racist in thinking that you don't want people to interbreed... that's actual Hitler stuff right there. Want to get more racist than that? (And invoking Hitler in SP discussion doesn't invoke Godwin, since they have portrayed Cartman as Hitler before).

South park has never had any character progression (beyond kenny not dying as much). Cartman will always be the obnoxious one, Kyle will always be the 'normal' one, Kenny will always be poor, and they'll always be in 4th(?) grade. What happens in one episode has no effect on the next. Good episode overall tho. Loved Cartman, and the shot with butters was just awesome.

The characters have all become much richer and there is an increased sense of continuity in the series such as all of Kenny's previous deaths being explained and Mysterion/Coon coming back a few times. Cartman is probably the character that has been most developed over the series. Cartman has maintained most of the traits he has had since the beginning but a much deeper and darker side has been getting revealed since S14 or so onward. The "1%" episode and the newest one are probably most indicative of that. There has also been a shift in the way the characters behave, a lot of the childlike naivety that was the source of humor in the early season is gone and the shows dynamic has played off of the children behaving like sane adults while the adults of the town behave/think like children for a while now. I really appreciate episodes when it's very apparent how young the main characters are. Also @mastergriggy this episode was largely about Cartman's misdirected racism (the belief that people can only have good relationships with people of the same race) and selfishness. There was nothing redeeming about it. He acted incredibly selfishly off of insane hallucinations and ruined Kyle's reputation in the process and in the end held himself to a double standard.

Anyway, I love these Cartman episodes because it shows just how damaged and dark he is, even though it's just a cartoon. I mean, he killed two people and ground them into chile, ffs.

I think the real turning point for Cartman came much earlier in the series starting with the Scott Tenorman episode. Great analysis :O

I know they do a few other things like musicals but they don't do a big project every year (as far as I know). Pretty much a dream job in their field. Lowest amount of work possible to hold a TV series pretty much. I thought 3 or 4 of the episodes were good this time around (cash for gold, the last 2, and I think another one I can't recall). Decent half to the season.

I wish I had a gig like the South Park team (at least those making the big salaries, not the lowly employees) : work 6-7 weeks, make a ton of money and then take 1/3 of the year off, work another 6-7 weeks, etc. I know they do a few other things like musicals but they don't do a big project every year (as far as I know).
