Here's what proceeds to happen: 2nd pick is jungle Tinker then 3rd pick offlane Sniper, 4th pick am safelane and last pick QoP...
What is it about video games that seems to attract the worst subhuman scum? Genuine question.
It's actually exactly the opposite for me.
Unranked seems to be pretty chilled and most of the time even decent picks. Wheras ranked games always end up in 3 people marking mid, 4 people picking cores and everyone being a dick.
It's gone so far, that I just completely stopped playing solo ranked - I just can't be asked anymore - after a 14 straight games loss streak which got me to under 4.5k again. When there's no one to play some games with I usually just mess around in unranked - or just go play some SC:R

Watch your own replays and focus on tiny things you could be doing better and try to justify every action you make. Consider other possible things you could be doing as well.
For example, if the time is 6 minutes in and the offlaner has a lot of farm think about how you could have better zoned him out and won your safe lane instead of letting him get so much.
Just create a list of things in your games that you think can be improved upon, e.g. Better zoning offlaner, more effective ganking, better yeamfight positioning, more efficient stacking/rotations
Then try to devise ways to actually do those things through sight micro adjustments in your play

As always, the best way to climb in mmr is to pick a few heroes, around 3 is usually fine but 2 or optimally 1 is better. Then only play those, that way you can improve the hero specific choices by actually getting to try your ideas out the next game. Since we also want to climb quickly we go to: https://www.dotabuff.com/heroes/meta
Then pick from the top 15 heroes in our current bracket or the one above. Pick ones you would enjoy and the closer to the highest win rate the better. Spirit Breaker seems like a good hero since you play offlane/4 and he can do both (he can also scale well into late game with perma bashes). Necrophos is a totally different style of hero so might not fit together that well in play style but it could do the mid/offlane roles.
Then once you have your heroes, play 2-3 unranked with them before the first ranked, just to get used to them. Then start playing and adapting the hero to the game and try out what works for you and what doesn't. You get much more time spent improving on general stuff with a small hero pool. With a big pool you spend more time trying to improve on the hero basics than general stuff.

how do you lane against a razor or viper as a meele hero? do you just play until the creeps reach to your tower in which case you pull the creeps near your own t2 so that you can lasthit without getting harassed or do you just decide to say fuck it and try to just leech xp and get runes then go jungle to catch up on farm in the midgame?
if there was a specific meele hero im talking about, its ember spirit against those 2.

you just don't win the lane
with that being said, there's a good number of small things you can do to gain advantages
#1) abuse vision and make sure they feel threatened
this isn't something you can do alone, but if you make sure to deward any potential ward that they might have mid then they can no longer see supports rotating which will make them not want to stand on your highground
this means that you want to try and keep the wave JUST under your side of the river, not on it, meaning you can grab a last hit or two per wave
#2) stacks. just go stack and shit if you can't lane and have a support sit mid and soak XP - it's better off for your team
#3) really emphasizing #1.... if they play too aggressive just kill them. if they dont then abuse vision and get what you can

Range increase doesn't work for radiance, however +6% spell damage does.

How can I get back into the game? I havent played since 2015 August. What do I need to look out for?
|
On September 30 2017 05:40 Bleak wrote: How can I get back into the game? I havent played since 2015 August. What do I need to look out for? Well, the map is pretty different and there are talents now. And obviously lots of heroes have changes to their abilities, although pretty few full reworks.
Really just jump in a bot game and run around the map learning about the new creep camps, new bounty spawns, and new levelling. Your biggest issue will probably be the lack of MMR decay once you go back to playing pubs (ranked or unranked, doesn't matter). You'll be playing against players roughly as good as you were when you left, but who know all the new stuff, so you might have a rough time at first.
A quick TLDR of talents is that you can't level stats anymore, but instead you get a hero-specific choice between 2 buffs at levels 10, 15, 20 and 25. These range from stats like Strength, mana or movespeed to spell-specific upgrades like "-1s Blink Cooldown" on AM or "Reincarnation has no mana cost" on Wraith King. Ultimate now at levels 6, 12, and 18 but you reach those levels at the same XP total (roughly) as old 6, 11 and 16.

play with a friend who still plays.
what happened to all the strategy forum posts?
|
no new posts in 15days, so they disappeared
|
liquiddota is dead is what happened
|
every dota forum is dying, seems like dota might just be dying in general
|
I mean the strategy section has been of dubious value for a long time. The strategy forum for starcraft was remarkably useful across skill levels, simply due to the nature of the game. Whereas in dota it's shockingly hard to have a valuable discussion between people with such varied skill levels. Especially considering the team aspect of the game.

And compared to BW there are a lot more frequent patches in Dota that completely change how the hero is played. So guides and stuff gets outdated quite rather quickly.
i.e. Naga Siren has gone from Safe lane carry to mid to support to mid to support to offlane to mid and is nowadays safelane carry again?
Add to that how much the item builds changes depending on nerfs / buffs. And also when new items are introduced to the game. Another good example for that would be Tinker as Aether + Aghs is very common now where as years ago aghs didn't have an effect and aether wasn't even in the game.
Therefore maintaining guides is pretty difficult as they would have huge overhauls quite often.
