Actually, it can be bad if you are a support hero and there is another hero in lane. Support heroes do not need as much money, and as such other carries should be last hitting since they can make more of the benefits of gold. If you are a support, focus on denying instead. This is the act of last hitting your own creep, which denies the enemy the gold, as well as reducing the XP they gain from the creep dieing. Keep in mind that a lot of supports have really bad attack animations - meaning that it is really hard to last hit/deny creeps; you may be better off just harassing the other heroes in lane, and let your carry focus on both last hitting and denying. However, do try to stay a little bit away from creeps - they will aggro you when you attack heroes if you are too close to creeps, and at low levels they do a lot of damage.
I would recommend playing a few co-op vs ai matches to practice everything - getting a feel of how to deny creeps, when they will aggro you, ect, without having to deal with people raging at you because you do something really stupid.
Also, as support, make sure that you buy the courier at the start of the round and drop it (if no one else has).
Oh, and if there is no ally in lane with you, try to get as many last hits as possible.

I'm not sure what is meant by last hits etc and how that is a bad thing?
u dont randomly hit creeps u try to only hit them for last hit so your lane don't advance and u get gankable (someone from other lane coming to get u) you only get gold if you give the killing blow hi to minions, if u did 99% damage but not the last hit you dont get gold... if u micro well in sc2 you can only try to kill minions non stop and i guarantee u will be better than 95% with only just that .... edit: also forget support they are way harder to play, just get an easy carry (str to start then agi when u feel confortable) I would actually suggest u to start with skeleton king ....

As a completely new player, it's better to just do it. Half the time the guy playing the carry in your lane will be awful at last hitting anyway, and you won't be taking anything away from him.

Thanks I think that's help answer a few things for me! I was baffled after my last few games why my XP and gold per minute at the end of the match was so much lower than most of my other team.
I think I'm starting to understand the basic economics of the game now - it's very different to sc2 but is it fair to say the the equivalent of "always build scv's and supply depots and expand management" (which forms the basis for almost any strategy in sc2) is something like:
1 - Only Micro kill last hit on creeps (same as building more scv's and expanding) and deny last hit on my own creeps if opponent is in lane. 2 - Spend gold (using item mule) at shops so that will help you stay in the lane a lot longer at the start (essentially not getting supply blocked in sc2 terms).
Is this a sound place to start? I'm trying to draw analogies to sc2 as that is what I'm familar with.

Not sure if you know this already but when laning, generally do not auto attack. It pushes the lane closer to the enemy tower and makes it more dangerous for you and your lanemate, and also makes it safer (more difficult to gank) for the enemy. For that reason if you are farming as a carry and the lane is close to your tower you can last hit and deny all the creeps and the lane will not move. This allows you to farm a lot while still being close to your tower.

Maybe they are inviting some inexperience players now, as I just got sent a key for filling out the survey form on steam and I have never played a game of any dota like before. I am really excited to play though, now I only need to get my internet reconnected after moving house.
I Can't wait to play!

I would say if u r noob get small itens or the recommended in a good order dying takes too much money and if u arent farming well my best advice is buy a lot 2 - is kind right u need sustain itens (tango for instance) to stay longer

You can buy Eul's or Ghost Scepter and use those.
Not all the things that can save you from Lycan have to be cast on him.

Buy the flying courier recipe when your team already has a normal courier.

Quick question: When having a party and looking for a match, how does the MMR work? I was planning on playing with a friend that would be much worse than I am. So I am curious one kind of players I would be playing against.

Oh, i thought it was (since before patched, there was a way to see it). Alas, hypothetically if it was implemented, how would it work if partied up?
