I think they have so many invites because of the recent patch. Because "nothing" is really figured out yet and qualifications start next week, there could be many "upsets". And while this may be entertaining and some "lesser" teams could get into the spotlight, for the real tournament higher-skilled teams (that maybe were patch-eliminated in the qualifieres) would destroy them, because they have much more time to prepare. And so Valve probably invited more teams than usual. So I would expect to have less invites the next time!

I'm not even kidding, group stages and 2 lower bracket bo1's at Shanghai aside, their only wins come from a 2-1 series vs Alliance and a 2-0 over the half-dead VP roster. How is that worthy of a major invite, only Gaben knows.
Their losses don't look that bad. Their group stages looked good as well. That's enough for me. Relative to their peers and other fringe teams (say VP Vega etc) they have shown more consistency in their performances. Doesn't matter if they have not won anything.
Sadly if we were to justify invites solely on merit, only liquid, VGR and wings would have made the cut. The 2 Chinese teams stood out among their Chinese peers. Liquid has the same roster and performed at the same top level. Eg and secret are unproven with their new lineup, and their invites are justified solely on reputation of performing well in top events. Navi/col have not won anything, alliance og MVP are in a slump, Fnatic has only won against sea teams and fucked up at ESL, LGD did alright in star ladder, but examining it closely it was only 2 Bo3 wins and that they are a mess domestically.
More consistency in what performance, taking last places all the time? Yeah, sure. Who cares whether you look bad or not during the games if in the end you're losing to everyone anyway? You're right about many other teams being either slumping or unproven -- but that's precisely why there should be more qualifier spots and fewer invites. Let them earn their place at what's supposed to be the cream of the crop tourney instead of getting in by virtue of 'not looking too bad' while losing left right and center.

OG Bo3 wins since (including) Shanghai major discounting Bo1s and group stages: MVP. and Alliance, both at SL.
Alliance Bo3 wins since (including) Shanghai major discounting Bo1s and group stages: VP
LGD Bo3 wins since (including) Shanghai major discounting Bo1s and group stages: Vega, Alliance.
As you see, coL/OG/[A]/LGD are all in the same boat here.
But coL has top 6 Shanghai to speak for them and Volvo invites top 6 at previous major without questions.
I don't even like LGD / Alliance / OG getting invited much either as their last few months (at least OG and A, LGD aren't doing too bad in China at least) looked very weak. But at least they have had actual achievements in the past. I'm not talking about just the last few months, I mean in the entire lifespan of Complexity as a team they have won two best of 3's. TWO SERIES. Total, EVER. So now all it takes to get an invite to a major is 2 bo1 wins and one bo3? I mean, qualifiers are harder to get through than that. How does that make sense?

With the same lineup, they have been top 6 at shanghai, top 4 at dotapit, winning epicenter and ESL Frankfurt qualifier, but finishing 5-6 at ESL manila. Playing well even if they loss shows credibility and ability to compete. We don't want teams that gets outclassed by their opponents, in the same manner like how ehome got shit on at manila.
Col's case isn't the strongest. But if you compare with their peers, they are easily a better choice.

1. coL won 4 Bo3 series on premier LANs (yes, one was against Mineski and another against i dontknowwho but whatever).
2. coL won all the NA qualifiers.
So, yes, coL does have way more to show for it than OG or LGD results-wise.

Like many have said, inviting LGD over NB is just stupid along with inviting 12 teams. Some of the teams have been really disappointing, some are untested and some have had only one good show. All in all these major invites seem like lottery which really sucks for those that don't get the invite. You get so much money just for showing up to a major that I don't think invites are a very just system.

I don't agree with the OG, LGD, Alliance and Complexity invites. Get rid of those 4 and we're back to 8 invited teams and 8 qualifier teams which is better. It's not like Complexity will have any problems getting through the American qualifier anyway.

I completely agree. I think Col is justified, as well as NaVi. OG have struggled since they're amazing fall of 2015, they are the most questionable invite for me.
It's pretty clear that they need to make a transparent set of rules for them to follow. Going from 8 invites for the last 2 majors to 12 invites because they didn't want to make some hard decisions is in some way taking the easy way out.
The reality is they have no accountability as to why they are doing what they are doing. They do it, the rest of us speculate and may even try to justify why they did it, but in the end we really don't know for certain.

Second, people talk about consistency of teams and the only team that could not be argued about is EG, in the span of a year EG ended: 2nd, 2nd, 5-6th, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 5-8th, 2nd, 3rd, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 3rd, 2nd Secret ended: 7-8th, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 5-6th, 7-8th, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 9-12th, 5-6th, 7-8th, 1st, 5-8th, 5-6th Liquid ended: 4th, 1st, 1st, 5-6th, 3rd, 3-4th, 5-6th, 2nd, 2nd (they are still not a year old)
You could shorten the span a bit and it gets even worse for Secret and Liquid. People are too focused on being fans and giving different weightings to international tournaments where in ESL they play against almost the same teams as in a Valve Major. Yes you could say players work harder for a Valve Major but I am not so sure, players wanna win everything usually.
To look down on everyone else you have to be on top, and only EG can claim that for the longest time.
Dude invites for a major are not based on the Performance over a years. It's a Mix of results from the last major, and other tournaments since then. In the case of liquid, secret or eg, the major placement was already good enough to be invited. Of course consistency should also play a role, but not what teams did a year ago. Teams and patches change all the time, so that should not matter.
Clearly this is not true at all
Well maybe its not true, but it's how it should work...
