Was reading on reddit that people were going for meteor instead of WW for the crits. Works before the patch, and they are buffing it as well.

Whats the standard wizard build lookin like nowadays? I've been outa the d3 loop

Premier, it depends on your equipment. The cheapest successful build is the current version of the critical mass build. It requires around 20 AP on crit, some life on hit, decent armor and resists, and a pretty high crit chance (I guess over 35% or so?) This post has details, and an example VOD (at a ridiculously high gear level).
However, that build is getting nerfed, although may work with meteor post-patch. The other options are an archon focused build but I think you need around 80k DPS or higher to make it work. The most "regular" build is either some form of magic missile, hydra, and blizzard, with whatever defensive skills you are comfortable with. Or an arcane orb focused build that uses arcane orb, usually hydra or blizzard, an offensive boosting skill and 3 defense skills.

I am running somewhat unique build I am sure ofcourse it is no where near MY OWN. But it works EXTREMELY effective. In my opinion this is the best and most versatile Wiz build out there right now for high-end gear Wiz w/ MAX dps.
Gear: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/ZyceR-1205/hero/23962323 When buying gear: Life regen, Life regen, Life regen! THIS IS KEY TO THIS BUILD. Keep in mind this works with ONLY with a certain % of vit. Too much regen and it refills u to fast which is wasted..Too little regen and u take too long to refill life. I figure these timings are the BEST. -W/ force armor u take ONLY 35% DMG MAX. @ 1 HIT. W/ whatever ur regen is..it should refill u in about 3-5 seconds max! SO roughly u need 15% regen per second of ur life. So for me...I have 30k life. 2100-2400 life regen is IDEAL. Regen is EXTREMELY cheap because people don't understand how amazing it truly is...Think of it this way. -1400 Life on hit = 2800 Life regen ( WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING)....truly remarkable. -All resistance is helpful but not ALWAYS needed...I do this build perfectly fine with only 300+ all resistance.I hardly ever die. I can stand on descreator...molten...anything. Because of massive life regen. -When it comes to dps...believe it or not the slower ur attacks per second...THE MORE UR CRIT DMG IS. - I perform 106k dps (crit for 400k) @ 1.21 attacks per second. - ILLUSIONIST PASSIVE IS A MUST! Anything else is optional ( This allows u to everytime u get hit...take the initial 35% dmg.w/ force armor. Then teleport out of the way and regen life.. Then get hit again, take the 35% dmg ..because once u get hit again ur teleport cooldown is restored. -Also Dexterity isn't NECESSARY. But keep in mind (Dex. = Dodge rate) More dex..more chance u have of dodging attacks!
So with my build.. 1.Lay a hydra down everywhere as ur walking around. 2.If anything hits u, use crystal shell and teleport out of the way. (Life refill in 3-5 seconds) 3. Spam seeker and kite around + Celestial orb 4. Keep dodging attacks and keep perform like so.
BONUS TO THIS BUILD?? - Can transition to pretty much anything you want. - DID I MENTION GETTING BUFFED? 1.0.5?(Seeker missle gaining 15% in dmg) - Allows for maximum dps - Impossible to nerf unless they nerf force armor from 35% to maybe 50%? But in no way shape or form has that ever been brought up. -Somewhat cheap to gear because doesn't require much ias gear or all resist gear (mostly crit chance, crit dmg)
If anyone has any question about this build please feel free to PM me. I clear act 3 so easily and I can handle any monster/elite/boss....

Your build seems allright, but it is nowhere as close to be able to grind as fast as an archon build.
Archon is truly the fastest way to kill stuff and level up, combined with critical mass tornado to reset the cooldown if not enough monsters are near.

Dear sir, I played a little on the PTR server testing wizard skills and I can tell you that Storm armor is totally useless right now, It does 100% weapon to ONE MONSTER every few second which is pretty terribly bad
As for Frozen armor, It has potential since the dps of monsters is less compared to 1.04 and it received a -8% melee damage reduction.
In the new patch, resistance and armor are less mandatory but are still optimal
You can still go energy armor with prismatic for 35% armor and 25% all resist but the other runes are also viable depending on what build you are trying to do.
For archon mode you can go +5% crit chance rune energy armor since your resistance are boosted allready by 40%
Personally I will use an archon mode build like i do now, but i might choose Frozen armor with the rune crystallize, which give you +30% armor stackable 3 times for every melee attack that hit you and last 30 seconds.
So you either go energy armor for 35% armor, 25% all resist and -20 arcane power OR
90% armor most of the time, chill or freeze melee attackers, -8% melee damage reduction and not lose 20 arcane power

Sorry if this has already been asked.
Does the archon beam work better with a one hander or two hand weapon? Meaning does the damage ticks faster with faster attack speed?
And what does the archon build look like anyways, besides the critical mass and archon and energy shield?
Thanks

This is what it pretty much looks like: http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#VXmjSO!gYZ!cacaZc And this is what it looks like in action: http://www.twitch.tv/bondator/b/332824253
AFAIK the ticks inside the beam don't tick any faster with attack speed, but your ticks simply do more damage. In theory, you could probably get better dps with a two hander, and you could even play without critical mass. Life steal max is also 6% in two handers vs. 3% in one handers, which would be very good. But in practice you will drop out of archon prematurely fairly often, so fast attack speed is extremely handy for resetting the cooldown.

I agree with you.. I am a big fan of u from sc2. I agree archon is indeed the fastest way...but IMO...it's also INCREDIBLY boring. It's almost impossible to kite in archon mode. I look for more unique ways to the game..my build is extremely fun and makes it interesting dodging and kiting and surviving..Archon build to me is just so bleh........I DO agree however it is most effective. So it's for certain people. However archon build is not for me.. I literally fell asleep numerous times doing that build it was just too damn ez.

the monsters arent gonna be chilled or frozen often enough to make cold blooded worth it, unless you want to pick the rune chilling aura

Ok, I need some help. Basically I want to use my wizard as a low monster power/high mf farmer. My WD was fulfilling this role but after 275 hrs on him (almost all pre paragon lvls) I really hate playing him now. I've had a 60 wiz sitting around for awhile untouched since my friend I play with often roles with a wiz. I also found a decent oculus wiz off hand that I can't sell for some reason.
So I moved all appropriate gear from my WD to my wiz and equipped the occy and bought an item here or there. Ok great. I have a wizard with some gear now but wtf build do I use to farm the lower MP lvls quickly with high mf? I would like to use shock pulse if it's even possible because of the 11% boost from the occy.
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Charger-1101/hero/23424110
Thanks for the help! <3
PS - The mf is still a little low, mainly due to no paragon lvls so far and I lost about 60 mf in gear due to not being able to use wd specific items.
|
I was testing the ptr last night and next patch is a big nerf to archon builds, at least if you want to farm higher monster power levels. I could only manage to kill stuff fast enough so i wasnt constantly poping out of archon till mosnter power 3, that is with 118k dps. What is also bad is getting archon back up quickly, sc nerf is pretty noticeable for that too.
So now ET is basically a dead end, it still works but you need insane attack speed, like above 2.0 aps, and its back to ww, sc is gone for sure.
the best new thing is still cm based though, but has a nice gear check if you want to be able to do mp10. there is 3 viable meteor runes now: star pact, meteor shower and liquify.... my favourite was shower, with so many hits i feel its the one that procs the most. Problem is its so ap hungry you need a bare minimum of 20 ap on crit and use ap reduction/reg runes passives to get it to work at around 1.6-1.7 attack speed. But with that i was able to do mp10.. at a snails pace yet though, friggin elites have 50m hp and im sacking dps to get the build to work.
So basically now we have to gear toward decent attack speeds without neglecting crit damage(so dps isnt shit) and even more ap on crit. Id say around 30 or stay at 20 and get meteor bonus on gear, if you want to ever remove ds prism and astral presence in favour of more dps passives/runes.
Storm armour is a piece of shit now, the only rune i thought of using is the one that reduces ap cost or maybe scramble if im going to do fast mp1 archon runs.
the armour stacking ice armour seemed very good, probably the best choice defensively now... ranged foes are a bitch though.
energy armour can still come in handy, but i see myself using pinpoint barrier more than prismatic.
ohh and i also see spectral blades builds working, healing blades was awsome.

dear ximae, I suggest a 30% increase damage against elite stone of jordan for the archon build
and you can even get the 2nd mod reduce cost of meteor + it gives extra arcane power
You could use meteor as critical mass build to reset the cooldown or archon if you cant keep it up instead of energy twister

Okay, I just got up to 130 million after a lucky immortal kings armor drop. Gear upgrade advice please! I'm probably looking to stick with critical mass post patch, but probably with meteor. Although I could be persuaded to go archon instead.
Obviously the weapon and source are priorities to upgrade. I want to avoid jewelry until post patch. But if I lose the life on hit or AP on crit on my weapon, that means I'd almost have to switch out some jewelry and/or helm for more ap on crit. Anyway, any and all advice is welcome. Maybe some 20 million gloves or something to start with? I guess if I get my dps high enough I could go archon until the patch and then switch back... A tal rasha's chest is probably a logical upgrade, but the only decent ones seem to be over 40 million... so expensive...

METEOR METEOR METEOR. Hello fellow wizzes. METEOR METEOR METEOR.
Just got my PTR Hellfire Ring--finished soloing the Uber bosses with a Meteor build. I'm interested in discussing ways to make this all more efficient. I am going to copy some write-ups I've done of the encounters for the D3 Wiz forum. Here is the basic Meteor build I am using and advocating: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#PYhQOX!WgX!cccZbZ. Plenty of other people are already using this build or variations on it and I might never have gone meteor without the help from Nitrocan over on the D3 forums.
I'm posting what follows because I want dialogue about the most efficient means of getting keys and mats for the Hellfire. This is obviously about doing it solo. Parties are probably more optimal but most of my friends have quit D3.
1.05 METEOR BUILDS: Maximizing AP vs Damage Mitigation
A lot of what I am talking about here assumes basic familiarity with meteor builds. If you need more info, go here: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/6712861334?page=1. My take on this build comes out of having built a shocknadoshard character for 1.04. Shocknadoshard wizards generally emphasize Armor, AR, CC, and IAS. I think this approach carries over: a meteor wizard should consider building a melee style character that can both take and deal damage.
Basically, Meteor is so AP intensive that you have to design your build around maximizing arcane power. At its best, the build allows for infinite meteor spam and permafreeze. At its worst, you'll find yourself desperately waving your wand in the air as enemies stare you down.
You have to balance damage mitigation with maximizing AP. So, for instance, the choice of prismatic armor will give you mitigation, but at the cost of 20 max AP. Diamond Skin: Prism sacrifices the mitigation of Crystal Shell for the reduced AP cost of spells. Prism not only takes the edge off of a slow cooldown: it allows for some serious meteor spam. However, these uber bosses sometimes (unpredictably) break crowd control and hit so hard that prism won't always do the trick (depending on your Armor, AR, and Life).
You'll have to experiment with this tension between AP and damage mitigation in the context of the strengths and weaknesses of your gear. My only across-the-board-gearing-advice would be to use as much APOC gear as possible as this only strengthens the build (in my opinion, APOC strengthens all worthwhile wiz builds).
WHY FARM MP10?
My experience on MP10 is that keys and body parts for the Hellfire Ring are guaranteed with 5NV (or 500+ MF). I have heard some streamers have not had this experience. But so far, I've farmed 24 keys and 5 body parts in 29 attempts on MP10. 29 for 29. For now, I want to optimize my solo MP10 runs (these aren't runs for general loot/legendaries. I will probably do that on MP6 as it is more efficient). [100% drop with 5NV on MP10 was confirmed today by Lylirra: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/6712951823?page=1 .]
ARMOR SPELL CHOICE
I WAS running Storm Armor but I've switched over to Energy Armor-Tap the Source. Storm is great for farming, imo, but terrible for Uber-bosses as it does not provide enough damage mitigation vs SK and vs Siege. Tap the Source helps meteor builds by ultimately allowing for more DPS due to increased arcane power. The hit of 20 max arcane that we get just for using vanilla energy armor can really kill this build.
UBER BOSSES
SK/Maghda
The uber bosses hit hard--especially the Skeleton King, Rakanoth. and Siege. The upside is that the skeleton king has some obvious tells when he becomes immune to CC and starts madly swinging. W/o force armor, he can almost one shot me if I don't run at the right time. I think Force makes more sense here than prismatic, but both will cut into your DPS by shaving off 20 max arcane power. Killing this pair with Force or prismatic is a slog for me. One that I don't want to repeat. So I advise Energy Armor: Tap the Source combined with smart play: don't let his windup hit you.
Maghda's bug attacks don't do anything if you are spamming diamond skin and her arcane sentries can be dodged. Some people like to use Slow Time rather than Explosive Blast. I used it at first but I prefer the DPS and crits that EB allows for.
Rak/Ghom
The Rakanoth/Ghom pairing is relatively easy as I can almost permafreeze them for the whole fight while tanking in the gas. BUT, Ghom dies a bit quicker and Rakanoth alone is harder to permafreeze. W/o force armor, he one-shotted me. So in my second attempt, still using Storm Armor, I focused the meteors on Rak. Ghom still died first but Rak didn't have much life left. In the future, I'll use energy armor: tap the source. I'm confident I can keep him frozen and port behind him if he manages an attack.
Kulle/Siege
Here's the build I used to take out Kulle/Siege--the pair that was hardest for me. http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#PYhQOX!ZgX!cZcZbZ
As we've known about CM builds for awhile, CC and APOC are king. For me, the difference that allowed me permafreeze on Siege/Kulle was a combination of pushing my crit up to 55% and using cold snap instead of bone chill as my frost nova rune. APOC from 3 sources is always a given for me.
The fight took me 8 minutes. That's the shortest of the 3 with SK/Magda taking me the longest (with Force Armor, SK/Magdha take me over 20 minutes). Siege/Kulle can initially be tough to freeze together as Kulle tends to flutter away while Siege prepares to charge. In this early phase, I wasted a lot of mana and cooldown time trying to lock them down. So if you feel at all insecure about these bosses, take the hit to dps and trade out bone chill for cold snap…an 8 minute fight on ML10 is fast as far as I am concerned.
I also recommend substituting blur for cold blooded. Again, this will slow your killing speed down. BUT, if you are freezing the two simultaneously, Kulle will likely die first leaving Siege as a single target. We all know that single targets are the bane of CM builds and this fight is no exception. Imo, you need at least one of the following to deal with his physical damage: Force Armor, Prismatic Armor, Crystal Shell, or Blur. I was prepared to use more than one, but each option amounts to lower dps. So I started with Blur and, to my surprise, it was enough. However, IT WAS CLOSE. In the last 2 minutes of the fight I was down to 1/4 of my health on a few occasions and I had one close call with a potion cool down. LOH was next to useless down the stretch (I had 8 or 900).
In the future, I'll be a bit more active teleporting behind siege because it seem to interrupt his attack and force him to move around allowing time for repositioning and cooldowns.
CONCLUSION
I don't think the build is OP unless you have sunk many millions (no less than a couple hundred million) into your gear. I have no reduced meteor gear on PTR. My SOJ with meteor reduction is sitting idle in 1.04. But I didn't need it to kill the bosses.
I'm happy to post screen shots of my specs/gear and of the kill if anyone is interested. To lazy and non-presumptuous to do it if no one is. Happy Meteroing!
tl;dr If you have high CC and APOC along with decent gear and a meteor build similar to the one I am linking, you can solo the MP10 Uber bosses on the PTR (and hopefully, barring any massive changes, on live 1.05).
You don't necessarily need Meteor-cost-reduction gear.
SK/Magdha and Siege/Kulle require, imo, some type of damage mitigation beyond your Armor and Resists (use Blur, a form of Force Armor, and/or Crystal Shell).
Hellfire brings RNG into play, but the PROC, 35% xp, and INT roll are guaranteed.
Oh…, yea and the Keybearers CAN drop legendaries. Got an Andariel's with my key.
MY STATS (with Enchantress):
Running Force Armor: Tap the Source I've got 154 Max Arcane Power, APOC of 26-27 depending on what helm I am using; Crit Chance of 55.5; AS of 2.13; 80k DPS, 6773 armor, 51k life (with only a star amythest in helm), and 715-815 resists (which I can add 45 to if needed); LOH 800-1200; Life Regen 700+.
