I've been waiting for the Red Wings to finally fall out of the playoffs for years. It's been a good run for them.

they arent going to fall of the playoffs. they will do just enough that Holland goes out and signs another 35+ player next year instead of getting an actual defense. or second line. or third line.

They made it into the playoffs in the west last year and took Chicago to 7 games, so...

Jimmy Howard played well, but it's not like they made it to overtime in game 7 against the Stanley Cup winning team solely because of him. I think that the 16-year GM of the most successful team in the NHL over that course has some idea what he's doing.

doesnt seem like he does. Once Rafalski and then Lidstrom retired the team became a fundamentally different type of club, and Holland's response was to get more elderly forwards.

No team in history could survive that kind of loss on defense. Lidstrom is a one of a kind player. The Norris should be renamed after him.

I agree that he was a once in a life time player, but Rafalski was just a solid smooth skating defensemen and could have been replaced to give the Red Wings another chance at the Cup in 10 or 11. Instead they continued to ride Lidstrom, they continued to not bother looking into younger D men and continued to rely on tertiary guys like Quincey and Erickson to eat major minutes. Its not like Holland didnt know he was about to lose his transition game.

Have the Red Wings drafted any decent skaters in the past several years? Seems like they have come up rather empty on blue chip players other than Howard. I'd say that that is the biggest difference between them and a team like the Sharks, who also has an older core. The Sharks have like 6 players on their roster whom they drafted since 2010, and that doesn't even include Pavelski, Couture, and Vlasic.
|
Yes they have, unfortunately there is no room for any of them because Cleary, Samuelson, Bertuzi and now Alferdson all need ice time. Basically Ken Holland's decision not to get a real offensive-defensiveman so they could continue to play their puck possession hockey caused Babcock to go full Canadian and try to remake the Wings into the Blues or LA, wherein its just dump and chase grinding hockey. And therefore speedy, skilled guys like Nyquist and Tatar can go fuck themselves, as can European defensemen.

Dan Cleary is gonna win the Hart this year. And the Vezina. Haters be D4Mn3DDD

They have some good ones still down in Grand Rapids. They also lost Brunner who they should have tried to resign but noooo, old guys. They do have Dekyser (sp?) who was solid last year for being a rookie. Hopefully he develops well.

Today's second line for the wings Bertuzi-Franzen-Alferdson. This is literally going to be like watching 3 dudes skating uphill. Just awful. Then, because Tatar is unable to score a point while playing with Cleary and Weiss on the third line this will be 'proof' that he sucks and thus back to the pressbox. Just awful asset management and awful assets. Quincey as the number 1 dman. Jesus. H. Fucking. Christ.

Part of the Wings identity since the Bowman days are those old players they bring in to win a cup. It has worked decently imo...
Im pretty sure that Holland knows the weaknesses to his team. Its just getting harder and harder to find top talent while drafting in the 20 to 30 spots.

The Red Wings were only able to do that when there was no salary cap. Under the new system, you are perpetually fucked if you don't draft well and bring in young players who are excellent values on cheap contracts.
