Edmonton should play with the net empty more often. They play better, have more urgency in their game and are relentless on the forecheck. They spent 3:20 in the MTL zone at the end of the game with the puck virtually the entire time.

The rest of the game was meh. They weren't bad but they weren't really good either. Listened to the announcers say the Oiler were top 10 or something in the faceoff dot and i am thinking how the fuck is that possible. Seems like they lose every draw and the only time they come out with the puck is stealing the other guys win. Not many clean wins is basiclly what Im saying

also. what the fuck is dan cleary doing out on the ice. what the fuck is alferdson doing on the team at 5 million when brunner could be at the very least just as inept as alfier at less then half the cost. what the fuck is nyquist doing in grand rapids. the second line is just garbage, too slow, too old, too lazy. I blame Holland for collecting this retirement age home but also Babcock who clearly wishes he was coaching LA or the Blues, full of grinding and forechecking but his team isnt built like that at all.

Good to see the Sharks shit on the Canucks once again.

It'll be even better if Edler gets suspended for his hit on Hertl. He'll probably get away with it, though.

What happened to Rinne? I cant believe that Sutter leaving suddenly was the straw that broke the camel's back there.

Well, Suter had always been the defensively responsible on eof him and Weber.

Weber is a great defender, he is probably the most solid real tough defender since Pronger or Scott Stevens. He also has an offensive ability that IMO is unparalleled in the NHL. If he was in the east I'd say he could score 30-40 goals.

the Preds were just taken apart by the Leafs. And while the Leafs are a bottom 4 playoff team, in the West they'd get fucked up hard so I think something must be pretty wrong in Nashville. This is the second year now that Rinne has been pedantic.

Fucked up hard? I wonder what you mean by that because stylistically the Leafs aren't an easy team to play against.

Was it that bad? I didn't see the game but if it was a really one-sided, dominant performance by the leafs then we have a pretty huge disconnect between the 'saw it good' and the 'stats' which is worth talking about. If one were to look at the numbers, they'd assume Nashville deserved a better fate:

still too early to say. the team is getting used to going from always shot blocking and defense never joining the rush to the total opposite. theyve been generating more chances but seem to be still in a funk defensively

That's interesting because technically the Leafs did have more quality scoring chances, which they did bring up in the telecast. Bernier only gave up one rebound. They covered the lanes well with their sticks and we moved the bodies out of the way to make Bernier's life a lot easier. I wouldn't call it one-sided, but on the defensive end, even with all the regular problems of turnovers, not winning faceoffs, etc. The Leafs managed to keep their changes short with eventually getting the puck out & Bernier getting the whistles. The Leafs really came alive midway through the game. Nowhere near a dominant performance and the score really doesn't justify it, but I would say we had higher percentage opportunities.

In other news, Tyler got 4 points last night against Winnipeg. He's warming up whereas, Loui is still looking for his first point. :o) and then he scores the game winning goal against the Jackets haha.

Leafs apparently play some anti-CORSI, anti-statistics sort of way where they give the other team majority possession and shots but try to limit the shots to the outside or make the other guys take easy shots for the goalie, while they play the speedier transition game because the team is young. It seems to be working so far, but it'll take the rest of the year to see if it's actually a legitimate strategy.

Tell me something I don't already know, lol. It's the same shit as the other guy and I don't buy the rest of the year crap because they've been doing this shit for a while now. You'd think the boys would improve at the face off circle or be a little tighter and stop turning over the puck but no. The funny thing is even though they turn over the puck or get rid of it to get fresh legs on the ice they still find ways to get the opposition to turn over the puck causing the counter attack and what do you know. They still get quality scoring chances when they avoid Kessel syndrome (as in his old antics). Anyway, I have a hard time believing their fortune will turn sour the same way I believe the turnovers and puck possession game won't change anytime soon. As long as they take the lanes away and tie and bump them up I'm fine with it. Last game Bernier showed terrific rebound control if he keeps that up, well good luck finding the net. That and we have three good scoring lines, so when we do get chances they're usually good unless Phil goes back to old antics because we all know how much he likes to shoot the puck even if it's from a bad position. Reason I give Kessel a lot of flack is he does it a lot. He gets a stupid amount of shots on the net and we know his ratios. ;/

Blisse, you should really read that Cronin interview. There's a link to it in the Grantland article. TOR is definitely in the belief that they are the smartest guys in the room!

Even with the defensive coverage they cannot rely on the goalie to make a save. May as well gamble.

Edmonton should have won that game. Dubnyk didn't make a big save when it was needed and let in a few soft ones. I though Edmontons defence was pretty good, puck pressure was excellent and they destroyed the leafs on the dot. No saves. 6 goals. 26 shots.

Every game they allow 4+. Asking the forwards to put in 5 every game is way to tall a task.

edit: Dubnyk should not have played that puck. Soooo dumb

Yeah, i dunno, every goaltender makes atleast one good save in every game.

I have not seen Dubnyk make a single one. That 0.749 tonight is too good.

Also, apparently Bolland is allowed to Bertuzzi RNH without a penalty call... Sweet.

idk, the idea is that either you're in the boat where possession statistics matter or you're not, because the leafs have the shittiest possession numbers and yet still win games. it'll take the rest of the season to completely prove or disprove, but being a smartass about it is stupid because toronto is winning games with their shitty stats.

all the non-calls in the leafs game went to the stlouis game. holy shit the pim.

You just repeated what you said before and like I said there's been plenty of time to review that and I wouldn't just focus on their puck possession. That's tunnel vision man. They've been pulling this shit for a while now with the line matching, turnovers, inability to win faceoffs (albeit Bozak won the important ones in the stretch), etc. They're going to have shitty puck possession and this won't change yet they will be a playoff team anyway like last season. They have more than enough weapons to score goals and we're not just talking about the shitty Oilers. Smart ass? Please.

I cannot believe I just drew this connection: Montreal's NHL team is the Canadiens and their colors are Red, White and Blue. Those are American colors! We should create some kind of controversy or something to counter the french language one that teams always seems to have.

Also, Carey Price: wow 3 or 4 damn good saves.
