At the cap without really understanding how you got there? If I were you I'd be getting ready for being a top 3 draft team. Which is actually good for you in the long term, the Wings will be just mediocre enough to get into the playoffs as a 7th seed before getting squashed if Howard has an off night or two thanks to Holland and his obsession with old men and Babcock and his obsession with Cleary. We've sparred over this a bit before. Only the abilities of Steve Mason worry me, but if he can be league-average I'm happy. PHI will always be up against the cap, and will have room moving forward. There are quite a few teams who are significantly worse than the Flyers on paper. When PHI was the worst team in the league in 2006-7, they had guys like Geoff Sanderson, Kyle Calder, Mike York, Randy Jones, and Niko Dimitrakos taking up much of the ice time. What we have now is an incredible group of forwards with a defense that has capable players. This team is far from the bottom 3, and should at least be an 8 seed. Again, goaltending is a question, but many teams have showed that you don't need a great goalie to win, just league average.

It takes teams an average of about 4 years to recover from losing Chris Pronger. Honestly though, there is nothing shittier than having as dominant a force as Pronger anchoring your team and then having him just... vanish. It leaves a huge hole which you scramble to fill and inevitably screw up your roster to the point that it takes years to rectify the problems. Also Luke Schenn.

I know, losing Pronger was just such a big thing. The only comparable situation was Marc Savard, but he was a forward, and BOS was fine without him. Sometimes I find it hard to understand how much blame Holmgren and co get for mismanagement when they had this basically unforeseeable disaster happen. $5M cap hit (which hurts not that bad), the guy who was supposed to be the No. 1 dman til say last year or this year, and a serious leader.

Jason Pominville, 5 years and $30M. He's decent but damn that's an overpay for a declining player who has been injury-prone the past few years.

They need more help in goalie and D, Backstrom was literally the only reason they were in the playoff hunt and as his play started slipping in the last 2 weeks so did their chances of winning anything. Anyway, Pronger being removed isnt the only reason Flyers sucked. Giving away Carter and Richards for free, then giving away Bob all to sign Bryzgalov to a monster contract was just dumb. As was getting rid of JVR for Schenn.

As was getting rid of JVR for Schenn. The Flyers dealt Richards to L.A. for forwards Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds, and a second-round pick in the 2012 draft. The Columbus Blue Jackets made a splash leading up to Friday night's first round of the 2011 Entry Draft, acquiring star forward Jeff Carter from the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday in exchange for forward Jakub Voracek as well as first-round pick and third-round 2011 picks. You are not totally wrong saying those were bad trades but saying they gave them away for free is exagerating imo. They still got 3 players who are on the roster today. That plus the fact that Mike Richards aint what he used to be.

It should be pointed out that Couturier is 20, and Schenn 22. Richards and Carter were hardly stars at that age. And again with Bobrovsky, he was a fairly average goalie for us. They absolutely gave up on him too early, but management turned an undrafted sophomore into a 2nd and a 3rd round pick. Not too shabby.
