Do you know how much force it requires to break a jaw in two separate places with one blow? A lot. Not to mention there is good reason hits like this never have happened before because you really just dont ever see a stick randomly flail horizontal to the ice at head level unless someone is trying to Marchment someone. You just dont. People miss hits EVERY game ever, not once has this kind of thing ever happened... and the only reason that makes sense for his stick to flail 180 degrees around is if he was just trying to get a piece of Gagner any way he could. Am I saying he was trying to break his jaw in two places and take an entire row of teeth out? nope... but he was definitely trying to slash Gagner, I dont see how you can argue that. His whole arm swings out.
Not to mention, Kassian has a touch of a history with poor choices on ice. He is banned from international competition because of numerous IIHF suspensions for dirty hits, Kassian has been suspended in all 3 leagues he has played in prior to the NHL, two of them for substantial periods of time; 20+ games. He was also charged with assualt twice, once in 2011, once in 2012. The only person to have a longer serving suspension than Zack Kassian in the CHL is Patrice Cormier for putting Mikeal Tam on Life support for almost two years.

I dunno, Gagners head was literally 6 feet laterally, and 6 feet vertically away from where Kassians stick as a hockey player SHOULD have been. Hell, growing up putting your stick above your shoulders EVER during a game is a penalty for 2 minutes. I doubt he was trying to hit Gagner in the face, but he was definitely trying to hit Gagner. I dont see how that is debateable.
And if all of this is just some messed up mistake I dont think that really matters. If i make some messed up mistake and hit someone with my car by accident then I still have to face the consequences.
Zack Kassian isn't exactly an angel reguardless, he has a long long looong history of hitting to hurt and crossing lines. He is a goon basically.

LETS GO BERNIER!!!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

wat happened w/ kessel and scott?
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger 11m John Scott goes after Phil Kessel. Awful.
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger 4m Kessel's two-hander was viscious, but survival instincts kicked in. @NHLShanahan will be busy with other hearings already scheduled.

Scott started yapping at the faceoff and said something Kessel didn't like. Kessel rebutted and then Scott got in his face after the puck drop and took off his gloves to fight Kessel while Kessel tried to get away (by this time Buffalo clawed back and the score was 4-3 for the Leafs). Once Scott got tied up with another Leaf Kessel took a two handed whack at Scott's skate and by that time everyone had a partner to tango with. The Leafs got good match-ups across the board for tango partners. The Bernier versus Miller fight was the highlight.

LOL @ Bernier and Miller.

Yeah it was after another fight my bad. In either case good old fun and Kessel took a few whacks lol. Not often you see everyone going at it. :V

Kassian is a piece of shit. You're a professional hockey player, not fucking Zangief.

A goalie fight in preseason? The hell is going on!?

Also, I fully support Kessel's attempts to chop the tree down with John Scott.
Kessel has a job with the Maple Leafs. And his job isn't to get punched in the face by someone who can't play hockey. If some guy who can't skate decides he needs to go after a 30-40 goal scorer, then I would have no problem with said goal-scorer putting stick to balls. It's all self-defense the way I see it. There is nothing dictating that Phil Kessel risk his season and his career to stand there and get punched by some stupid ogre.
Of course, my perfect NHL doesn't have people like John Scott in it. In my perfect NHL, skill is on such prominent display that you simply can't afford to give a roster spot to anyone who isn't the next-best-hockey-player-out-there. Face-punchers would have no business on NHL ice.
edit: Also, fun contrast between two sides of the effectiveness of fighting issue:

Kessel could have simply skated away. You might say he didn't want to look like a coward, but swinging your stick isn't exactly the ballsiest move. Hopefully this event influences GMs to stop giving goons contracts; if they can't play they shouldn't be out there.

Scott tried to jump him. Shouldn't do that.

Technically he was trying to skate away but tried to take several chops at the same time to tell Scott to fuck off because from Kessel's take the guy was going to jump him regardless after the other fight. He'll probably get a game or two and Clarkson will get ten and the Leafs sign Raymond to a one year deal. Whoop; whoop. He'll probably get a lot more money next year from someone else because he's most certainly back in form.

Good god, that Gagner picture.

Let's give it some context, shall we? Last year he was making just over 2mil. The Leafs are paying him 1mil and he had a great training camp. I'd say that's worth.
