The combo of speculation about DNC hack, his son freely admitting that they received heavy Russian investment and the refusal to tell anyone how much money he really has will be point of attack forever. The speculation and theorizing will be almost as bad as whatever truth is in there.
It also blunts his ability to attack the Clinton Foundation or her speeches. Say what you will about the Clinton Foundation, we know way more about it and who gives it money than we know about Trump. And they will provide information on request, unlike Trump. The speeches are another matter, but they are just speeches.
The speculation will be ignored by his supporters and the truth is probably worse then the speculation anyway. The guy isn't worth nearly what he says and he likely hasn't payed taxes in years.
His supporters don’t matter at this point in the race. They will vote and that will be that. People who have already made up their mind are not the targets going forward. Its independents and the many people who are not paying attention right now.
At which point there is 1000 other things to get them to dislike Trump that are much more impact full then his tax returns.

Nixon I think? Ford?
Per my very quick digging, it has been common practice since the 1970s.
And in an age where skepticism and cynicism regardingthe elite and politics, I can't imagine the media will let it slide. it's a compelling struggle and gives viewers something secretive to keep track of. It's a really good story, verification of Trump's taxes. If it will keep people interested, the media will exploit it.

Especially since Obama had to re-release his birth certificate and Trump isn't even showing his tax returns x.x What a dumb double standard. They should really punish that decision hard, considering all the bombast Trump is showing.

I mean it's pretty obvious where the double standard comes from.

Whoa, whoa whoa, lets not get crazy here. We solved that problem in America culture and we shouldn’t talk about it anymore. Or say it. Or suggest it might still be a problem.

If Dems can hammer this idea home in the right way, this might actually be one of the few things that can do damage to his support if one of the following happens:
Either A) he lied about his actual net worth and is worth far far less than he presented. I think this only works if he is worth <10 mil. Otherwise I think he would get a pass with his base even though he lied about being a billionaire.
B) he is stubborn about it and the opposition gets to call him a sneak and a liar for an extended amount of time. Not sure if there is enough time for this option to really work its magic though.
Trumps networth you can find on forbes. Trump over estimates it like many other rich people. Some rich people actively approach forbes to get their wealth propped up and when they think they estimated it to low. Trump is not alone in this, and being proud about your net worth, isnt that a typical American thing anyway? Who cares if its 3 billion or 10 billion, its a huge amount no matter what. This argument really is beyond stupid lol, if the democrats think they can use this as en effective argumernt then they are in even worse shape then I thought.
Trump gets to his number by valuing his brand name, something that forbes does not take into account. Its an asset that is very difficult to value, some people might even value the brand name as negative in trumps case. In the end its not important, he has at least 3b in hard assets.

Are you sure? And what are his debts? Why does he want to make pocket change off Trump Steaks? And not pay bills? Are you aware of his debt-fueled business and personal finances disaster earlier in his life? Or his having gotten bailed out multiple times by friends and family?
And is this just an isolated lie by Trump about himself, not part of a pattern?

Trump is rich, I'd say he's somewhere between $2-4b's
My thinking is he does deals like Trump Steaks because after screwing over his old business partners the big guys don't want to do deals with him. I've heard a lot of bankers refuse to take his calls. So he's stuck with this stuff, which is profitable but not as large scale as his old real estate deals.
