I usually play at odd times (5am EST to 10am EST) and I host games with the name title [D/C/B]. I've played around 30 games in the past 2-3 days and literally every D player that has joined my game with the exception of one has been a smurf or previously holding B- or above ranks previous seasons. And that is if a D player does join my game. The majority of players who join my game are C+ or above. I'm all for going against people better than me and getting smashed, but it is starting to get frustrating that I am climbing up an ever so steep hill that it is very mentally exhausting. I know it is still a work in progress, but I think match-making alone will be a godsend that will fix the main problems with ICCup (other than the fact that anyone can host/play). I'm becoming very jaded with the fact that players my skill level or below go out of their way to avoid me, and then I have to fight smurfs and people who are just starting out the season as a previously B- or above player at the D ranks. And it is fucking retarded because I'm putting more of my points up on the line while the rewards I get are less than lucrative. Nothing about my ICCup experience has been that enjoyable or rewarding to me when I feel like I'm getting the short end of the stick because of how the system works. Not that the system is totally to blame, since when you host/join games you can dodge as much as you want and selectively pick your opponents which is such a fucked way to ladder, but that is how b.net works. I know suggestions are probably moot at this point since match-making is still a WIP, but I just hope there is a system in place where people get penalties for trying to avoid or leave games, even if it is under 2 minutes. And hopefully there isn't a way where people can see who they are up against before the game launches and they can just close their browser or whatever with no penalty and then they can just relog on Shieldbattery and requeue. Also I think a big way to fix that kind of abuse is also to implement rankings that are more strict than ICCup (but less strict than Fish please. Kinda blows that only 1-2 players are S and A rank). You can get to B- on ICCup by shitstomping noobs with more gain than loss the whole way there. There should be a really strong incentive to play people stronger or at your level, while consequences for playing people below you. I think the consequences shouldn't be that bad, especially considering it is queue match-making, but it needs to definitely be more strict than ICCup's. And for smurfs, I can't imagine how you would really fix this problem once it is open registration. Maybe put more weight on a fresh accounts wins. But I think something that would really help is carry over rank from previous Shieldbattery seasons (like how some players start new ICCup seasons at C-). But I think it is something that should kind of permanently stick to the account because too often I am pitted against D players who didn't play last season, but checking up on their stats they have like B- or B every season before it. So for example if you finish whatever the equivalent of a "B" rank is on Shieldbattery for a season, next season you start at C rank. And then if you don't play in that season, the season after that you decay to C-. And then D+. And if you haven't played for those two seasons as well, finally you are decayed to D rank again for the next season. Imagine how it is for someone way worse than you. I've never beaten a B player in a macro game in my life. All wins against B or higher players are from aggressive games. That said, automatic match-making would make me switch races because I don't play ZvZ.

I see a lot of people complaining about a small player base, unable to find games due to lack of players. Is there a reason for not inviting more or simply making it an open beta? This is actually a very good point. I understand they're probably worried about server stress, but honestly if it's at a point it's working, surely the next logical step is to either make it open, give players already in invites to invite more or make it an open beta now?

It's better to have a small player base to get the thing made than to open it up, have a bunch of people try it and encounter some bug, then never come back because it's "totally broken"

Is there a plan to do another invite wave any time soon? I studied software development at uni and developed my own software for Broodwar (the tournament stream UI system thing) and I'm not sure who's sorting out all of your coding, but they must understand that you could be testing for years and when you finally release there's still going to be bugs, such is the nature of software development! While I understand and appreciate your situation you're in right now, I worry that if you leave it too long people are going to lose interest because of that. I'm sure there's a lot of people who signed up to your beta initially that didn't get in, that probably haven't posted about it or expressed interest in a while. It's the same with any project like this. I personally feel the important step is to get the people who are actively interested involved as soon as possible to expand your test user base and make the experience better for everyone! Now I'm not saying you guys are doing a bad job, quite the opposite. I love that the SB guys are putting all this work into something to make the game better for all of us, that's great and thanks SB guys!

While this is true, there certainly is a difference between having a usable product and something that is beyond broken.

When you create a game called D/C/B, a true leve D/D+ player that want to ladder or just play a close skill game won't join that game. Because it seems that the host it's at least C+ or higher skill. When i make games with D/D+ name, most of ppl joining in are that in that range of skill level. Of course there are few games that some higher ranks come in, but most of games are indeed that range of skill level that i'm asking in the game's name. D/C/B games are hosted for ppl that are high level skill and just started laddering or a new acc. Agreed. I host my games with my current rank and then the map name. So as I climb or fall I go "D FS" "D+ FS" "C- FS" etc. So far this season I have played a bit over 20 games and I'd say not a single opponent was a smurf or just starting the season or whatever.

Yeah, no smurfs here, just NORMAL B+ players joining a 1v1 D+ game or this guy: http://iccup.com/starcraft/gamingprofile/InTT.remag.html C+ max, must be a newb, right?
