The 10th Sonic Starleague is around the corner with the offline group selection ceremony starting in just . What does the mastermind behind the Starleague's revival have to say about his motives? And what are his future plans? This recent DES interview answers these very questions.
The Brood War community has recently heard the good news that the OnGameNet Starleague (OSL) would be returning. Previously operated by BJ Sonic at his own expense, the 10th season of the Sonic Starleague would be jointly held together with OGN.
Known as BJ Sonic, Hwang Hyojin started hosting online Brood War leagues in 2006. In 2009, Sonic started the Sonic Starleague (SSL) series and held its inaugural season. The SSL has been operating consistently and continues to this day. Although most Brood War players transitioned to StarCraft 2, many eventually retired and returned to participate in the SSLs. Killer won the 7th and 8th seasons, Bisu proved his supremacy by dominating the 9th and official Brood War competition lived on.
Sonic surprised his fans when he revealed that the 10th season would be aired on OnGameNet. Today, we met the Brood War enthusiast Hwang Hyojin for an interview.
◆ Double life Although Sonic made a name for himself as a Brood War streamer, he is now the CEO of a fashion company. He started his business by opening an online shopping mall called Sinbalfarm (Shoefarm) but his passion for Brood War continued as he lived the double life of a businessmen and gamer.
"As you are probably all aware, I used to be a broadcasting jockey (BJ) before serving my mandatory military service. I was active on the Afreeca streaming platform, but also at OGN's channel called Playple. In my prime, I had to leave for the military service, but was able to spend my time there envisioning many business plans. After I was discharged, I opened an online shopping mall and made some money."
While operating his business, Sonic couldn't forget his days as a BJ. During the day, he did his best to manage his business and in the evening, he put on the BJ Sonic mask. He gathered amateur players and organized the first online SSL, using the earnings from his business as prize money.
With the end of official Brood War competition with the 2012 Tving OSL, Sonic felt great regret. "It was a shame that the careers of highly skilled Brood War progamers had ended and they were forced to play SC2. Many of the players were unable to adapt to the new game and retired one by one, which was also sad to see. So I decided to raise the scale of my competition."
Starting with the 7th season, more prominent players participated and the league grew in scale. It now started with 32 players (as opposed to the 24 of SSL 5) and many big names like Movie, Sea, Killer and HiyA joined one by one. Then, in the 9th season, Bisu and ZerO participated, with Bisu and hero facing one another in the finals to create a lot of excitement. As the finals of the Starleague were played offline, the fans could now see their heroes in person.
"Any time I organized a Brood War competition, I could sense that there were still many fans in love with the game. Living the uneasy double life, I felt rewarded for all the work I put in."
◆ The Starleague full of joy and sorrow Hosting the Starleagues by himself for nine seasons, Sonic faced many difficulties. Responsible for the players' salaries and prize money, he continued in spite of difficulties. Many advised him to forget about the leagues and focus his time and energy on the business. "Truthfully, the business faced some hardships. We imported lots of goods from one brand but they wouldn't sell. We were at great loss and couldn't even settle on a proper payment, but even then I couldn't abandon the SSL."
Sonic's passion for the SSL was incredible. Business was business and the Sonic Starleague was the Sonic Starleague.
"The country's leading conglomerate once wanted to support the SSL. But just before competition started, the sponsor withdrew and I had to use my business earnings. The staff advised me to postpone the SSL, but I couldn't break my promise to the fans. At the time, the business didn't really have much money so I had to take a bank loan to continue operating the SSL. At that time, we were doing everything we could to find another sponsor. As a result, we secured Itembay and FIX as the sponsors for the 8th and 9th seasons of the SSL, respectively."
◇ Sonic's fashion brand SBENU aims high and has been successful enough to have this Hongdae (region in Seoul) building as their own.
◆ Convincing OGN After Bisu won SSL 9 in March 2014, Sonic spent some time focusing on his business. Keeping his online shopping mall Sinbalfarm operating was important, but he was also looking to extend his business by creating his own fashion brand, SBENU.
"Sinbalfarm originally offered traditional brands like Nike or New Balance, but with SBENU, the design, production and sales all come from me. Rather than selling other people's shoes, I felt selling my own would be more meaningful."
SBENU is a new brand, but it has already become popular among teens and those in their twenties, enabling its sales to reach the skies. Without revealing exact sales figures, it's common to see young people wearing SBENU shoes on the streets. SBENU is also aggressively marketing the brand, having recently signed up Song Jaerim, a popular actor, and even IU, a famous female singer, alongside AOA, a Kpop girl group.
"The ultimate goal of my business is to be profitable, but there was also my strong desire to revive Brood War Starleague and its popularity through the means of OnGameNet. With MBCGame closing, nostalgic Brood War fans would want to see the game aired on OGN. I also share the sentiment."
With Sonic's SBENU brand becoming successful and news of continued preparation of SSL 10, OGN was impressed. Kim Carrier, who commentated SSL 8 and 9, acted as the intermediary in negotiations as OGN decided to host SSL 10. Sonic readily agreed to co-sponsor the SSL. As a result, after a two year break since the 2012 Tving Starleague, OnGameNet's Starleague will return.
◆ The Dream ★ lives on In 2015, the OnGameNet SBENU Starleague will air on OGN starting with the Round of 16 and Sonic's biggest dreams will have come true. And to top it off, at the finals of the SSL 10, the superstar IU will perform.
But Sonic's dream doesn't stop here. He wants to recreate his memories of the Tving OSL. Fondly remembering the crowd of fans that filled Jamsil Gymnasium, Sonic set a goal for himself: to revive Brood War. "I want to show people that Brood War isn't over. Starting with the SSL on OGN, I want to keep raising the bar to a point where we can host the finals in the Jamsil Gymnasium. It may not happen with SSL 10, but can we make it a reality for the 11th or the 12th seasons?"
After SSL 9 ended, Sonic decided not to cast the next season. He enjoyed interacting with fans through his broadcasts, but to increase the production quality, he decided to step back from the front line. Expanding his business to be more successful enabled Sonic to give the fans an even better and more enjoyable experience. "You may not see BJ Sonic in the upcoming SSL anymore. But as the CEO of SBENU, I will work even harder to ensure the Brood War Starleague can continue."
Asked if he'll go see the SSL 10 matches personally, Sonic revealed: "I think I'll only attend the finals. I'll keep an eye out on the broadcasted matches while working in my office. Continuing to build my business, I'll work hard to make sure the Brood War Starleague doesn't end," he concluded the interview.

I'm 100% sure that in 10 years when BW is still being actively played and broadcasted on TV, someone will make a movie about Sonic and how he revived BW.

that sounds like a very sweet idea. However, lets not get ahead of ourselves. We know that professional BW is just on the brink of coming back again. There is still a lot to be achieved until we can call it a stable thing. On the other hand, Sonic is obviously the hero this game needs, my trust in him to make it happen is almost infinite.
What we can do is to make sure, the upcoming SSL/OSL get's the best coverage and the most support here we as fans can give. Im so hyped, i won't miss a single game of this!

Nope, like an American blockbuster with Jonah Hill playing Sonic.
Didn't realize that he actually took out a loan to run SSL when his business was having problems. Passion right there! Thanks for everything you've done Sonic and here's to a great SSL10! Thanks for the translation Stratos.
Is this tournament officially an OSL or an SSL? It seemed like from the article it's an OSL, but my previous impression was that it was an SSL broadcasted by OGN.

Koreans only use these shortcuts very rarely, if at all, and otherwise you pretty much see any possible combination like "10th Sonic Starleague" "10th SBENU Starleague" "Sonic's 10th SBENU Starleague with OnGameNet" "OnGameNet Starleague".
Officially probably sth like "Sonic's 10th SBENU Starcraft League with OnGameNet". Here I used OSL cuz "SSL revival" wouldn't make sense and "Starleague revival(what the original article is named)" was too long. Otherwise we will be using SSL10 or SSL.
Much like people clinging to SSBM in the fighting community, I think this hurts the growth of the franchise in all honesty. People finally started letting go of CS 1.6 and embraced CSGO and it's taking off like a rocket. All good things must come to an end.

But we're not interested in the growth of the franchise, ESPORTS or the profits of Blizzard, we're interested in BW. Go Sonic!

K but I couldn't care less about your franchise. And what you comfortably ignore are the young players that suddenly had their jobs taken from them. It is great that the fans will still take care of them at least long enough for the players to figure out what they want to do with their lives.

Is CSGO generally considered an inferior spectator experience compared to CS 1.6? I'm not trying to start an argument but I'm not well-versed in professional Counter-Strike grief and I think it's pretty uncontroversial to say that BW was more fun to watch than SC2. There are several reasons for this but it's beside the point.
Also, obligatory comment about slamball never replacing basketball and the artificial nature of the way Blizzard forced the end of professional BW.

I think the general consensus on GO now is that it's the best CS yet. It had a rocky start but Valve really listen to its audience

I personally think strategic wise GO is a better specating experience because of how the new grenades work. Wallbanging is so-so. I actually like both approaches. While 1.6's wall banging was ridiculous at times it also made up with nice skill display. For frags and clean view I think 1.6 is far superior for spectating. So in the end, both have their strengths and weaknesses and both are fine games and far superior to Source.
I'm glad that BW has basically revived now, and has upward momentum behind it. It's certainly not going anywhere anytime soon, and may even reclaim its glory days, at the rate it's going. Good for BW, the game that wouldn't die, even when it was killed.

It's not that BW died on it's own, via a natural process of being replaced by the better game. In fact, Blizzard is solely responsible for the death of BW proscene, killing it so they can push the then-subpar wings of liberty.
Speaking of that, nowadays I enjoy sc2hots more than I do brood war. Not to offend anyone, but aside from 3-4 players, BW scene is really amateur when it comes to skill display.

Just because a new game comes out doesn't mean it should replace the previous one... some people just like the older games better
(and lol "franchise"... who's to say that the growth of new titles in the franchise requires a competitive scene for those new titles?)

There are people who think SC2 is a better spectator experience than BW. The real point here is that I don't think we're not interested in progressing ESPORTS as a whole; rather, we're interested in watching BW. Maybe that makes us a bunch of curmudgeons who are stucking clinging to the past, I don't know and I don't care. What I do know is that this is awesome.

Yes, I choose to play 1.6, because it still has that sparkly feeling, despite being pretty broken. I stopped playing competitevely and following the proscene during Source, but the community has done so much to keep the original alive. The amount of active servers (even in my country and its neighbours!) and mods these days is truly heartwarming.
Too bad I didn't discover TL before 2010, but as a lover of all things Starcraft it was amazing to follow both simultaneously. I only hope BW & SC2 would co-exist and prosper in harmony.

Having been a blind Blizzard fanboy since their SNES games, I find it hard to expect such patience from nowadays' kids. Times change, but fortunately I don't have to.
I have my alarm set. Tomorrow - once again - I'll wake up just for you, ToSsGirLBrood War. Last time I set my alarm for BW must have been over 2 years.

10/10 troll, will get people to reply to your dumb post for pages to come. It reaches that pinnacle of balance between stupidity and believability, audaciousness and ignorance. Congratulations!
This is such a great story. I just love how the passion of one man ignited the passion of so many other people and turned this crazy dream into a reality. I've been following the revival of Brood War ever since it was "replaced" and it's just amazing how this grass-roots effort is basically recreating the old Korean BW scene from scratch. Seeing it broadcast on OGN and possibly filling stadiums in the future... it gives me nerd chills.
I see no reason why the two professional scenes couldn't coexist. Brood War probably won't find a following outside of Korea, but does it matter? It was thriving long before the rest of the world took an interest in it. And honestly, I think it is a better spectator experience, as long as the skill level of the players is high enough.
You know, I'd love it if Tasteless would do an English cast for a future SSL. He might find his passion again!
The man took out a loan to single handily revive the entire scene. Someone needs to erect a statue of him somewhere. Imagine where we'd be if he wasn't around?
This is my official request for a tl bw ts room, so we can watch tournies as a group. Because that fantasy vs jang bi was a ton of fun until what appeared to be the last osl ended with a dt rush.
Wow what a fucking hero, I had no idea of all the hard work he had to put in to do all this, I thought Sbenu was some sponsor he found or something... Hats off to this guy, for being awesomely hard working, an inspiration and for bringing back BW. You fucking go Sonic.

Well you still just want to argue about it instead of just let it go, maybe that is the reason i think the way i do? All i was saying is that i don't see why you have to quote the bait on every single page, there is literally no mature reason to do so. If you want to argue about it any more pls pm me, as i said before it won't help the thread to use it for this "discussion".
I guess you don't think my idea is any good though, maybe you have another one? I think a lot of people would gladly show sonic his effort means something, even in the foreign scene.

Noone's holding you back. I'm not doing anything like that right now as I'll be busy with the preview. I don't think buying plenty shoes is an easy plan to pull off. Maybe a nice gesture would be to collect some love for sbenu, like sbenu cheerfuls and fun photoshops, if done right sonic could use it to get a bit more sbenu PR and hopefully we get sbenu shipping abroad in return.
But how many ppl would actually buy the shoes? 50 at best? Not sure if that will ever be worth it for sonic.
Well yeah i just wanted to see what people think about it in general. I have no idea how many of us would buy some shoes or how to do that in the end, we probably would need someone in korea or something like that. I just think there has to be a way to support him somehow, at best through his business (obviously other ideas are great as well, if we can't somehow buy shoes or anything else) I just would like to hear what others think, not sure if a new thread is required for that at though
You're not going to organize anything in this thread, so if you want to give it a go you should start one. If you're just wondering whether ppl would like to make something nice for Sonic, the answer is yes, but unless someone organizes it it's just not happening.

It's just too good of a story.
Like the narrative of the Smash Bros and that doc?
Nope, like an American blockbuster with Jonah Hill playing Sonic.
The amount of work, effort, and more importantly sacrifice he has had to make, in order to make the SSL not only move on, but continue to grow, is something the vast majority of us cannot even grasp, much less fully comprehend, my hat off to you.
You shall forever be a true hero in my eyes. I sincerely hope this brings as much joy to you, as it does to us as fans.

Much like people trying to make brawl a thing in the Smash community, I think this hurts the quality of the gaming scene by trying to make a inferior sequel replace a much better original. Just like the smash community came back to melee because it was better, once the community embraces brood war instead of the inferior sequel, the community will be better for it. All crappy games must lose their scene.
The more I hear about Sonic the less I can believe what he's done. I hope that I can be half as successful and dedicated as he is. I wish he were able to watch more of the games, he deserves to enjoy the fruits of his labors.
Sure we already had our Terran Emperor in BoxeR, a sAviOr, and a God in Flash, but Sonic is truly what we needed as a community to bring us back to this, a true fan and spectator of the game we loved.

Can someone explain who this Sonic is, and why everyone is praising him?
He basically revived organised, high level brood war in SKorea. He scarified an incredible amount of time and money (financing everything through his business or personal loans) to achieve this. The guy poured his heart and soul into his dream of reviving brood war and he 'officially' accomplished this with the OGN partnership. Above all else, he's kept alive the game a lot of us have cherished for a long time, but feared was fading into obscurity. For this, a lot of people, myself included (if it wasn't obvious), have a great respect for the guy.

Those mice are worth $8,000. I think they will look for any excuse not to give them out so easily. If this tournament goes down well they might just reboot their whole OSL without Sonic which would be amazing.

And the point of saying this? Please never visit this thread again

lol? Calm down dude. He is crediting Sonic and the bw com even though he doesn't care for bw itself. That's a good thing, what is wrong with you?
Wow, the dedication and drive is amazing! Inspiring read, I look forward to seeing some of these games. Proves that if you never give up, you can truly make your goals come true!
WAT BW IS ON OGN AGAIN? Is this real life? I've just read literally the whole 27 pages of the group ceremony LR. What's happening? And why has Xiphos been perma banned?

This is indeed real life and BW is back on the OGN
Xiphos... was Xiphos on anything related to girls and dating. He couldn't keep well enough alone and so it didn't work about between him and us.
