Like meh forget that. Is there a group of people around who helps newbies? Like, actual newbies, not this "must be at least 1800 MMR" stuff because yeah, before I can even hope to get to that level, I need some idea of what I'm doing wrong. Everyone just says "watch your replays" and it's like yup there I go losing again, what am I looking for? What, specifically, caused me to lose in that situation?

Day9 has a great series on starting StarCraft, you can google it. LMaster has more. Liquipedia has builds. Etc. It's like learning anything else - you have to do research, watch videos, read, etc. No one is going to hold your hand the whole way through and there is no one holy grail of information that will instantly make the whole game click.

As Jealous said, LMaster discord server is really helpful. There are a lot of players who improved a lot who came from the LMaster discord server. I recommend first things first that you remember the building hotkeys for units/buildings soon if you haven't already. That will make you a lot faster because you can use keyboard for many actions instead of moving your mouse to click the unit/building (which is actually way slower). Similarly, learn to get used to hotkeying your army units so you don't need to drag boxes as often (which will save a ton of time and will allow you to send units to battle faster and more synchronously so that your army won't be destroyed piecemeal). You can train this against AI if you find it difficult to get the opportunity to learn it on ladder. In my experience, it took me a long time (probably almost a year) to increase my apm (from 40 to mid 100s) but it will happen for you eventually if you are willing because you will learn more about the game and in turn, you learn of more actions that you can and should do at any moment. Also, if you would like, you can send replays and I am sure some people are willing to help (including myself although if you are terran, I will be of little help in TvP).

Yes and sorry for those obnoxious tards. You know, it's a small community of veterans of an hardcore game that have been renegade for so long... so that's what we get at the moment :/ Anyways, it have always been better to find friends and a guild to play a ton of custom 1v1, 3v3, ums, having a ton of happy and funny moments ![]() Welcome

I can't imagine jumping straight into 1v1 and getting completely roflstomped every game while still trying to learn the hotkeys and stuff. This! Absolutely! And watch a lot of pro games (ASL, KSL) which is funny and informative in the same time! (Even better First Person videos on youtube!

you dont have the mental stress of having to deal with players much better than you for like 50 games before you even understand where you screwed up, and you get to practice builds etc without worrying about cheeses or build counters that screw up your initial learning process. when you add computers later its mainly just for practicing macro cycles and army management later in the game. i would not advise watching pros extensively (especially fpvods) until you have an idea of what the main builds are for each race and how each matchup is generally played. not only are pros' actions impossible to replicate as a noob, your lack of understanding of the game will cause you to see various things that are more confusing than helpful. if you were korean id recommend you watch pro matches with korean commentary as korean casters are highly insightful and informative, but if youre an english player then youd probably have to watch english casts which i personally dont have much experience with.

Yes, this totally come before online team games. The sc1 campaign is really good in gradually introducing you to all the units in the game. If you enter the LAN section (right below battlenet) you can play team games with the AI by selecting "Top vs Bottom" mode. Or just on B.net by doing the same ![]() i would not advise watching pros extensively (especially fpvods) until you have an idea of what the main builds are for each race and how each matchup is generally played. not only are pros' actions impossible to replicate as a noob, your lack of understanding of the game will cause you to see various things that are more confusing than helpful. if you were korean id recommend you watch pro matches with korean commentary as korean casters are highly insightful and informative, but if youre an english player then youd probably have to watch english casts which i personally dont have much experience with. I disagree on that, you can definitely enjoy watching pros at low lavel and still learn things like basic meta, units composition and other basic things like that. On fpvods, again, you can definitely enjoy the otherworldly skill of those pros while learning a number of things like how they use actions, the way the lay mines, burrow lurkers, macro sections, minimap, hand warm up spam, and things like that (mostly micro tricks). You definitely don't need to know all the builds to enjoy fpvods.

to a new player its much more important that they understand at the simplest level, things such as the fact that in tvp it is essential that you have minefields in place when big armies engage. it is not important to a new player how to efficiently lay those mines, how to destroy mines as you advance, how to place mines in strategic areas around the map to give you vision and information etc. that stuff you learn after you have the basics down, not while youre trying to learn the game at its simplest form

Go into LAN mode, create a game with one CPU, hit "start" and select "open slot" for the CPU player while the 5 second timer counts down. After loading the game it will inform you that you've won and can go to the victory screen, but you can choose to stay on the map without any opposition effectively becoming training field. Another helpful thing is that the balance has not been changed since 2001 (except for [ladder] maps). For other games you have to search for recent content, but for Brood War even the oldest builds on Liquipedia still work fine and every Day9 video is still as helpful today as it has been 2009.
