Hey guys!
I realise that I was laid off, using the word fired was just lack of vocabulary from my side.
As the title clearly says, I just got fired. I am 15 years old and I have worked there right since I turned 13. You might think, what's the big deal? But for me it is hell of a deal, on my school, probably 40% of those my age, have a job. And out of those I probably had the best. All of the others had paper routes or some shitty job sweeping in a warehouse, or cleaning in a bakery. Where againts, my job is in a store that sells kitchen stuff mostly. What I think is great is that I can take a coffee break, others at my school cant. I work indoor, most of my mates dont.
Today I got a message from my boss that said I should come to work if I could today. Right as I got this message I started thinking, and I began thinking of the what the posibilities for what she wanted me to come for was. One of the first things were being fired. I was pretty sure of this because of 2 things. 1. One of my coworkers got fired, but then the budget allowed her to be rehired. 2. She didnt ask for me to come work today or anything, she asked if I could stop by, so that made me pretty nervous.
So I got there, and me and my boss went into the office and we got some coffee and a piece of cake. She told me how much she appreciated me and what a difference I had done around this place. She told me that it was her boss that had told her to fire me, since the budget wasnt high enough for me to be in it. She had fighted for me and sent alot of emails to him, and had gotten pretty pissed at him. She had tried to tell him how big a difference I made, thinking of how cheap I am to have working. But he didnt want to listen and just told her that she should just stop. But my boss is right. When I think about I am damn cheap to have working in the back. While the adults are in the store taking care of the customers, I am in the back, opening goods, restocking the store and doing other stuff. And I do this faster than the others do, to half price even. I appreciate my bosses effort, but the big guys wont listen, too bad for me....
Now, I have 3 moths left of working, and then I have to stop (I stop May 1st). There is one teeny bitty chance that I can stay, but if that has to happen, we have to sell for the same numbes or more, as we did in december (And we sell a hell of a lot in december cuz of christmas) the next 3 months. So all in all, my chances arent good. But my boss told me that the instant she hears they have money to hire someone like me again, she will call me. Also, I am saving up for a new PC, I did the numbers and I will ecxactly have money for it when I stop, so that is one good thing.
And now.....soon I will have over 11 more hours per week of freetime. What the hell should I spend all this time on? I guess the best thing I can think of is DotA, atm I am playing DotA 1, but by the time I stop, I would hope DotA 2 is either released, or that I finally get my beta key. Since I will have a lot of time to spend, I think I will make it my goal to become very good at DotA. I would say I am a pretty good player, with okay much experience. So that will be what my time is dedicated too if I aint mega lucky to keep my job.
Thanks for reading if you got through it all

I think you mean you got laid off. Being fired would mean they were firing you cause you did a bad job. Laid off meaning that cant afford to keep you or your position is no longer needed. Also your only 15, the money is only for spending not for actually living so its not a huge deal if you cant find a replacement job right away. If the only things you really liked about the job is working inside and having coffee breaks I think you will happy anywheres lol. There are plenty of decent minimum wage jobs that allow this and usually at these jobs its not really about the work you do but the people you work with that make the job enjoyable or not. Anyways hope this helps and I hope you figure out your "situation" lol
|
Ugh that sucks man, at least you get three months notice, which is way better then anything you would get here in the States. Hopefully you can find a backup job in the time you have. Good luck man! If I come across a spare Dota2 key il hook you up

And yeah, ofc, my coworkers were also great, I enjoyed the job itself and everything there was great. Just forgot to mention it. I dont think there is anything in my town that will be near as good at all.

Laid off, not fired. Don't worry Your boss was clearly on your side.
It sounds like your job ended in a professional manner, which is always a good thing. Never burn bridges with employers or co-workers. You never know what opportunities will arise down the road.
You can always look for a new job if you have so much free time, or take a little while to relax.
|
Sorry to hear it, but as others have mentioned it's important to differentiate laid off from fired. Even though they might feel the same. Definitely keep on good terms with everyone you've worked with, also. You have no idea what they could bring.
If you cherish your emplyment so much, I would recommend looking for another place to work after May 1st. Ask your boss if it's ok to have them call her as a reference, and make sure you put down your employment on your resume. Already having experience is a big plus in a lot of places.
All the best, good luck!
|
Hey man, you're 15 and in school, you have plenty of time before losing your job is a huge deal. I admire your work ethic though. I also worked from the age of 13 and also had jobs much better than my peers (in America, I was pretty much the only one with a job in my grade, save for a few). Because of our young age, time restrictions, and lack of experience, we are usually not the best candidates for jobs, especially if there are applicants who are more qualified/more flexible willing to work for same or similar work. We're often seen as undependable, and I don't think it's an unfair assumption to make about young teens, even if your particular behavior hasn't shown anything of the like. When it comes time for lay-offs, it's always more beneficial to lay-off the young, inexperienced, short-hour workers. So, keep your chin up, and enjoy the additional freedom for a bit!
|
yeah, laid off, not fired. fired is usually because you did something bad.
good luck, dude. i hope they'll hire you again (at least before you turn too old to want to work there).
|
I read the title a was prepared to ask who you sexually harassed XD. Crabby situation for you. Perhaps you could ask your boss' boss in person if it is absolutely set in stone that you will need to be laid off.
|
If your boss was fighting for you to keep the job then that's atleast moderately good news. She's a supportive reference in that case for your next job. There's a huge difference between laid off and fired.
|
As others said above, you were laid off and not fired. Don't take it too hard on yourself, stuff like this happens - business is business, business as usual.

Not a big deal Sounds like you'll be able to get a great recommendation from your boss, which is always important. ^^
|
you sound like a hardworking mature individual. reading your blog post really makes me feel spoiled...
|
Yeah like others have said, you got laid off but that's better than being fired. You ended on good terms so who knows what may pop up later down the line, and at the very least you'll get a good referance for the next job you go for. Best of luck to you though .
|
You people start working early
Good luck keeping your job, but having more free time until someone turns up isn't that bad at your age.
|
Wow, no wonder Denmark & co. are doing so well. 40% of high school kids have jobs? That's absolutely amazing.
Take a break, enjoy some games
|
If only all bosses are as nice as yours when they lay you off, you even got cake! Losing your job starts to suck when you have to pay for food and a roof over your head, it's nice to see that you care about work already at your age.
|
Make a good resume and started handing them out... imho best advice. More experience and at a young age is so good. I don't think you will have trouble finding another job, possible a better one. Not until you try!
|
And now.....soon I will have over 11 more hours per week of freetime. What the hell should I spend all this time on?
Go and have sex?
|
Youre young. you can recover still.
Also try to build connections while youre still young.
GL.
|
Your boss seems to like you, be absolutely SURE to get her as a reference for your next resume.
And if you're getting a new PC right as you finish, I'm pretty sure I know where those extra 11 hours are going to go...

Working since 13?? Is that even legal in Denmark?

Since you worked there for that long, there would be real value in a piece of paper that outlines how long you worked, and how satisfied your boss was with your work.
It will help you a lot when it comes to landing good part time work later on - because what they hate more than anything is people that just quit after a few months and they have to go through the process again (or people that are sick or lazy all the time)
Make sure you get something like that Reason is that while she may very well work as a reference, you never know - in 5 years or 3 years or whatever ... she might not be around, have moved abroad, changed jobs, whatever
And GL to you.

I can't imagine being 13 and "want" to work on a payjob for any reason whatsoever

These days I work for the same reason ... I want the money I get paid for the work.

Being laid off is sustantially different from being fired. It sucks, and I remember it happening to me in high school as well. The plus side though is that you are still only 15, and it probably isn't earth-shattering that you are out of work for now. Use your free time to look for other jobs or just have fun!

Sometimes kids want to buy stuff their parents won't buy for them :z

Not everyone "wants" the same "thing," nor are they "limited" with their "imagination."

there are many reasons, you should open your mind to any possibility.
Maybe you can learn a trade, you can learn responsibility, you can learn to manage your OWN bank account. These are all good things to learn at a young age, otherwise you may grow up dependent on someone else forever.
|
That sucks dude, it sounds like you were a hard-working kid. You don't think you can find another job? Maybe volunteer work to build up a resume?
|
Don't worry if your former boss did try so hard to keep your around that means she will be a great contact the next job you get. Hey man don't worry about working so much you will probably be working till your in your 60's so you've got lots of time.
|
At least you'll have money for a new PC and at least your boss thinks you're good - I hope you get to keep your job though. Stay strong man, you've got your whole life ahead of you and even if you don't get to keep your job, rest assured that at least you did it well while you had it and that you will be missed.
Good luck to ya.
|
Ditch the PC, spend it at the closest red light district. x)
Dude, you're only 15, you weren't fired (laid off), and if there's ever an opening in that company, your boss is probably gonna get you first dibs on it. If you're really looking to find another job, good luck I guess.
You could always try going pro in DotA 2...

Wow dude your total boss!! 15 Your working so hard and earning the value of money so quickly! All to help fund a computer aswell nice! Glad more and more people eare learning the value of money and a job at young age. Also you understand you have a good job for your age and you do sound like you work your ass of.
But if the boss really did stick up for you as much as you say they did, i cant beleive they would get rid of you over a full time paying adult. But i guess employment law might be different in America anyway. Like others have said you will get a good reference from them and im sure another job will come your way! Plus this puts you in good direction when your older, you will be able to pick up part time jobs at a good level due to working in such an eviroment as a Kitchen store at a young age.
Good luck and chin up

I've never had a job for more than three months even when I worked in China for a year.
I'm 25.
|
sorry to hear and gl man. but one word of advice: you are going to be working for the rest of your life! no need to rush into it!
|
you're boss's recommendation is worth her weight in gold in the job hunt. having that much experience in your life and a boss that approves of you will get you a job with a bit of money to it.

Really when I was 13 I wanted a job. The reason I wanted a job was because I wanted money so I could do stuff and not have to ask my parents. Want to know what I did when I turned 16 and got my drivers license? Job hunting until I got a job. Money is nice when you can do stuff with it especially when your parents don't buy you much other then birthday/christmas. ^^

Thanks for all the great words guys! I will prbably end up using my extra time to play some DotA 2 and maybe try to go pro. I am young, have loads of experience in DotA, I am pretty good (not to brag, but I ain't too shabby) and the game is new, so this is would be an optimal time to get very good or even pro. Once again thanks for all the kind words

I believe the best term is "walking papers" because its plenty of notice. I assume because you are young there is not as many bills to pay. You should be able to find a new job no problem with a recommendation

True, but I live in a small town where every fucking job is taken. I can't describe how lucky I was to get the job I have now. :D

Sparkling recommendation is worth more than the wages you got for 2 years. Sucks that your extra income got cut, but you'll even more important than the recommendation you can bundle with your resume is the worth ethic it implies, which will let you win at life.

pretty much everyone here starts working roughly around 13, lotso jobs

So you got the notice you're getting laid off, but it doesn't take effect until May? Sounds like you got the better of that deal - a lot of people only get a couple weeks (maybe less). You can apply around and try to get a different job before May, or just chill and enjoy life under parental support.
And, as Chill said, you have a great reference. A good recommendation can outright land you a job!

supporting yourself with a part time job instead of suckling on mommy's teat isn't a bad thing at all. It's quite the opposite actually
don't burn your bridges op, enjoy yourself for a bit and maybe throw out a few apps and get yourself another job!
