Being a Mod... its a tough job. Internet sites and channels would not function without them. It is odd though how much hate you can receive for being a mod and get no thanks at all. Now, Im not whining. I enjoy modding, kills time when im to tired to work on my website or 1v1. But I do think that the responses i get are somewhat... overkill? Im now experiencing what is too be a "member" of the community. And I get some interesting messages.

(Timeout X for trash talking Naniwa in iNcontroL's stream)
"Banned again because I don't know Naniwa123. I'm not a Starcraft player, big fucking deal.

I hope you catch cancer you fucking piece of shit. Nice profile pic, you look like a total homo. I had more muscle mass when I turned 18 lol. Keep on trying.

Oh yeah by the way you have absolutely no traps, do you even deadlift? LOL.

Not to mention you're carrying way too much fat. If you were a powerlifter I'd let that one slide, but your tiny traps are a 100% guarantee that you're not a Powerlifter. Please learn how to diet. "
You can go to justin.tv/gokutv to find out what hes talking about lol.

(Banned X From NASL for calling iNcontroL fat)

"You got a soft spot for fatty's fatty? i swear to god if i see you i will stab you and then because you are so fat i would have to shoot you in the face because the knife won't hit any of your organs cause of what a fat ass you are"

(Banned X from iNcontroL stream for trash talking Anna)
The only people that find her attractive are ugly fat people like yourself. Fucking virgin, fuckin waste of space go fuck yourself virgin, hope you die.

(Banned X from... somewhere for something)
FUCK YOU AND YOUR MOM AND YOUR FAMILY HOPE YOU GET AIDS AND DIE A SLOW DEATH AND GET THROWN IN JAIL AND RAPED BY 6 ******'S.

(I did Friends only mode because of the massive trash talking that was going on too Leah Jackson)
You are the biggest piece of shit I've ever seen. Open up the channel you blob. I will kill you slowly and shit on your corpse

Modding... you don't get thanked for it. Only public flaming and private death threats!
<3

Not really a secret on the internet, anything that has a big fan base will have a significant portion of its idiots too. If you're a moderator you just need to have thick skin and ignore it, nothing you can really do about it.

Anonymity gives people a lot of confidence that they would not normally have.

I get that being a mod really makes one's views on people in general very jaded.

I've only been here for the past 3 or so years, but the mods are a huge part of the reason why I've gotten so sucked in to SC. I love that there are reputations that people have, standards, and an instilled urge to add to the community. In so many internet interactions there is little accountability and so much taking without giving. I love that TL encourages respectful, human interaction. There is also constant improvement from the staff. Over the time I've been here, TL has become more professional and slick.

So yeah, mods rule.

I've been going out of my way to make sure that the TL mods have been enjoying the experience of moderating shit I report for weeks.

What I do is, when I make a report, I throw a message in a bottle that says, "Dearest report-button-man, I love you."

I'd been building up this amazing rapport with the man who answers the report button. I'd report things, leave a note, the response would always be promptly delivered:

I can't help it, I just love snitching.

Of course, I'd mistakenly laboured under the belief that whoever it was who got all of my little messages in mod-bottles was just one person - one person who could love me. Whoever they were, they appreciated it. They understood me, deep down. They maybe even loved me a bit <3

I had it made, I was a cool dude, I was building a relationship. We had a future. Until I got this PM:

I could tell he'd had to resist typing the heart, you can see it in the hesitation of that last full stop. To paraphrase Shakespeare

O Motbob, Motbob! wherefore art thou Motbob?
Deny thy admin and refuse thy modship;
Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I'll no longer be a Userlet.

Of course the people you're banning won't be thanking you. As for those whom you're actually doing a service, money is a form of thanks you can depend on. If you're not getting payed, you'd better be sure that you're not in it for the money, but you'd better be damned sure that you're not in it for other people's appretiation. What's the value in praise from a fool, or thanks from a freeloader?

This is why pretty much whatever voluntary job you're going to do, you should never do it for the thanks. You should always only do it because it's fun. If you like making up stories, become a quest GM, if you like making order, become a law GM, if you like managing discussions, become a mod. Besides that, you still need to have a strong will, nerves and dedication. People are gonna hate if you stop doing or don't finish whatever you announced, whether it's voluntary or not.

If you're not in it for the thanks or an icon at your name and you don't mind the bashing, every now and then a little pat on the back or a thank you comes your way and you're happy while having fun.

If you're in it for the thanks, things might go ugly. You'll start to see the people you do the job for as insects that only live to bother you and become obsessed with your power to the point where whenever anyone questions anything you do or the way you do it, you need to get rid of one as "one of those enemy insects". It might even be just a casual visitor that thought of a brilliant idea and wants to help making your job easier, but you can't see clearly, because if someone threatens your position or judgement, he threatens your existence.

I'm just throwing this out there, even though you're not whining or anything. This is my personal experience and the reason why I would never do something for the thanks or an icon, a bold name... First find out what's fun for you, then see if it can be helpful to the community. And don't expect anything in return - after all, you're just having fun :-)

edit: also @ SirJolt - brilliant :D

I appreciate the job you were doing in the SOTG chat, sir. Mostly its just that hate will draw comments while if people think you're doing your job correctly, they'll not notice that you're doing your job.

You don't become a mod to get thanked. All the thanks mods get are silent and seldom put in words. Mod is a sacrifice and thats the way it should be.

You're trolled so easily goku a ban is a privilege and shouldn't be handed out so readily. I mod for day9 and it gets just as bad. When I see you let the trolling get to you and you pretty much feed the trolling I often wonder if you have any idea what you're doing. I'm not trying to hate on you but you really need to learn what you should and shouldn't respond to. The simple shit you have been responding to just feeds encouragement.

Best is just to ignore them.

I would personally love to be a mod because I know how to deal with BM, I even enjoy it when unknown people BM me and I can write something lightly sarcastic or irrelevant back to them, lol

Aren't the hilariously immature and impotent threats all the reward you could ask for?
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

I think on TL we're a bit lucky. We get very few of those comments that you just posted and in general people are quite pleasant. In fact, I get excited when I see one of those posts as I don't have to think about the ban too much. Even the bad posters on TL seem to live in the grey areas, which is nice because they're not rude, but it's difficult because every ban is a tough decision.

I'm with Zellidon, you get trolled too easily to be a proper mod, this goes back to the days of you (and many people who are new to modding stream chats) responding to everything people say. Hell you made it a personal competition to try to get more compliments out of the chat that you're the best mod that iNcontroL has or something like that...thats absolutely ridiculous dude.

The best mods that I've been around in my experience are the ones that are willing to let chat flow as it does but you only get rid of people that are over the top obscene, spamming links, or those who are just starting up flame wars. Trolling is an absolute part of it that you shouldn't even bother listening to. You shouldn't EXPECT thanks whatsoever.

Until you get used to the idea that you are NOT supposed to be thanked by anyone for being a mod, and can get used to the fact that people troll you because you respond back to them, you won't be ready for some of the more insane streams around. I've modded for stream chats everywhere from 5 viewers to 40,000. The way I've seen you conduct it is far from ideal.

Mods and staff on TL get thanked all the time. I actually find the threads that do it kind of annoying.

If you're modding because you want praise or some meaningless power and respect, then you should probably just stop. In my opinion the ideal moderator is just another contributor. Someone who sees a void and wants to fill it for the community's sake, not just his or her own. Sadly, on most of the internet people are doing it for the meaningless power and then when they realise their job has all the glory of being a garbage man (a noble job, but not a glorious one), they get tired of it and start complaining.

Unfortunatly those people are the retarded and very loud minority.

The majority of people understand the need for mods and i for one think they do a great job. I would become a mod just to try and make something like the TL community better by getting rid of the idiots who flame, troll and are disrespectful to other forum members.

If you think about it, when you get messages like those you should look at it like this:

I have just baned aa awful person and made the community a better place, where is my next victim
GinjaNinja.661 EU I'd like to thank my sh*t keyyboard for always messing up my 'Y's

i actually don't agree with the op at all. of course the people you ban flame you. big news bro. but on almost every channel i'm modding people are thankful if you come in (after no mod has been there) and you start banning people, put on slowmode, whatever they ask for. because that immedeately reduces the trolling by a large percentile, at least on channels with 1k-5k viewers.

+ Show Spoiler +
now i know that you, goku`, do mod nasl and maybe even ipl if i'm not mistaken, but i don't think that these should count. because (again) it's not big news that there are infinity trolls on these kind of streams.

so my point stands. on average (personal) streams, nobody except for the people you ban (obviously) will be angry at you being a mod. and sometimes people thank you, in fact that happened to me quite often so far. maybe you mod wrong bro.

I was a huge fan of Dell.

Then one day I sent my laptop in for repair, and they lost it, and they ignored my emails, and ignored my phone calls, and it took 3 months for them to send me a replacement, and then they didn't even send me one with the same specs as before, then the computer broke again in 2 weeks.

I look at modding the same way now. Sure, there are lots of great mods, but there are also lots of crap mods on the internet. It's easy to lump them all together as great until you get fucked by one.

For example, on the NASL chat, one of the mods asked "how are people getting 1080p for free?" So I typed how they were doing it. I was perm-IP banned, and I sent about 4 emails and they were all ignored with no response. Excuse me if I don't thank him for his work.

i agree. the majority of mods are great but there are always those that i auto avoid if they have a presence in the thread. smarting off to people almost as if theyre taunting them to break the rules. its like a corrupt cop. all the other goos cops will stick up for him so you have no choice but to avoid him.

just how the world turns.
