Okay so for the last 6 months we've been paying $30 a month for... slow internet. They are one of the few isp in my area. Were paying $30 a month which i just looked up online is suppose to be 15mbps, what were getting is 1.6Mbps and their 9.99 a month plan is 1Mbps. Now... Is it possible that there is something on my end that i screwed up, maybe why my internet is 15 times slower then it is suppose to be? I want to be sure before i call up the company and bitch for $300 back.

If anyone has anything for me too check let me know :D

Are you using a wireless router?

And there's 0 chance they're going to give you a $300 refund for the PAST SIX months. :/

Are you confusing 'megabits per second' with 'megabytes per second', because i think you might be. Though that doesn't account for all of it. Also, what mikeymoo said.

Yeah, this is very likely.

1.6 megabytes per second is pretty close to 15 megabits per second (12.8)

Well i know that but obviously me yelling and asking for a refund will get me something :D. I just don't want to call up and be a complete douche if its 100% my fault.

Well you know, I get up to 15mbps and get 10-18mbps.. I guess if that's the case than the ISP sucks.

No, however i'm not sure why i would have 15x slower then i am suppose to.

PS: thank you teamliquid for the quick responds. Much love. I already feel better :D

EDIT @JAso yeah im getting 1Mbps to 1.6mbps so im pretty sure i'm paying for something slower then im suppose to get.

As stated, 15 megabits/sec does not equal 15 megabytes down/sec.

sometimes its dependant on the speed you can get in your area. Regardless, they wont give you 6 months refund for something you never notified them of. Be thankful if you get 1 month free.

I used to be the one who dealt with people like you, and we had so many people calling up every other day for tiny minute details. they dont give back refunds really, some systems (like ours) didnt even have a way to give back refunds, we had to send it off to investivations to get them to see if its worth it, and that is for major issues (like outages in that area), not this.

Point of the story is; if it took you 6 months to realize it, it must of not been that big of a deal otherwise you would of called sooner. You dont buy a car with a broken air conditioner, drive it for a year then take it back demanding 100% refund.

Hmm. That seems like too good a deal to be true :/

I pay like 24 a month for .6mbps. Might be bad advertising.

just call em and complain, say your service is shitty, internet's been exceptionally slow lately (no real point mentioning 6 months, you aren't gonna get a refund or anything), bitch, blah blah blah. go through the useless instructions they give you (restart your router, plug in directly, etc etc ..) then see what they say.

before you do all that though, make sure you're reading 1.6 Mbps and not 1.6 MBps

i think it's fair to assume he has already tried plugging his computer in directly, bypassing the router and all that jazz to confirm it's an ISP issue. if not, do so.

if you're 100% certain you're just getting unacceptable service from ISP, when you call and bitch, i wouldn't demand refund. i'd demand a free upgrade of some kind (like the 25mbps line or if they have any other perks like increased GB cap etc) or cancel and go sign with another ISP. free upgrades are generally a lot easier to come by than refunds in the telecom industry, but granted this varies on an isp by isp basis, and i don't have any personal experience with your isp so take my advice with a bucket of salt. my 2c.

I don't think you answered if you're actually downloading at 1.5MBps (megaBYTES per sec), and paying for 15Mbps (megaBITS per sec). If you are then you're getting 12 out of 15 megabits per sec, which is pretty good for an "up to" connection.

If they are giving you the wrong service, well that sucks.

Sometimes rodents can get in the PVC pipe that the wires run through underground and chew them up. It can't hurt to call.

I've got an "up to 10Mbps" service and I get 17Mbps on a wireless laptop, so it all depends on the infrastructure.

You know the difference, 99.95% of people don't. He's only refered to it as "downloading at 1.5mbps", downloading is usually measured in megabytes per sec.

He's obviously used Speedtest.net before, and if you have used it as well you would know that it reports Megabits/sec not Megabytes/sec.

I'm half expecting the company to give you a 128kilobytes/sec internet. Hopefully not, but we'll see what happens.

I looked at the website and here's a table that will disambiguate everything: http://www.tdstelecom.com/PopUp.aspx?sid=93059&oid=21151

MATH TIME:

First row, a movie is 1GB

1 gigabyte = 1000 megabytes

1 gigabyte / 5 minutes = 1000 megabytes / 300 seconds = 3.33 megabytes / second

1 megabyte = 8 megabits

3.33 megabytes / second = 26.64 megabits / second (Approximately the advertised speed)

As you can see, you were actually getting exactly what you paid for, but were tricked by the deceptive advertising standards that utilizes the megabit as a unit when all downloads are traditionally measured in megabytes.

Usually the policy should state "up to 15mbps", so as long as you get around 35-50% of that its acceptable. I pay $50 for 15/2, which is basic tier service. The policy is as long as I get anything near 5mbps down, its considered acceptable.

you should post your results from http://www.speedtest.net/ - that site uses Mbps, which is different then MB/s (aka MBps). Sounds like the company was actually not giving you the right service, however it still sounds fishy, as you didn't answer any of the "you download at 1.6MB/s right?" questions.

If you are unable to watch an HD stream, then yea, its your ISP.

However, if you can watch an HD stream (of sc2) or watch 720p videos on youtube, this means that it was, infact, the difference between MB/s and mbps.

How much do you guys pay for internet out of curiosity guys?

Everyone seems to pay so much. We get 50Mb/s download and 5Mb/s upload for $25 dollars a month. You're really not getting your worth imo O_o

MB means megabyte and lower case mb means megabit. The website you linked says you get 15 megaBITs per second. You're getting 1.6 MBps (megabytes) = 12.8mbps (megaBITS) per second which is close to what they said you would get.

Wow, I pay more than twice what you do for 18 down and 2.5 up. :/ Like the other guy asked, I assume that is capped though so I guess that is the downside.

As for the OP

Just call your ISP tech support and check it out with them. They will do some speedtests with you and compare with your sync, if you are indeed getting slowspeed they will know if it's on your side or theirs.
Do it, because I spent 3 years with slowspeed issues only to notice once I changed ISP that the wiring in my home was all bad.

If you're on the rogers plan, there is an extreme package(which is the one i'm on) that says 15MB/s ... but when i read closely, it said up to 15MB/s. Like you i'm also getting 1.5 MB/s

i had a problem similar to this. there may be a few causes for this: 1) your modem may be working wrong. have a tech come out and check it out (should be free). 2) your neighbors may be running routers that will interfere with your channel. if they use channel 6 and u do as well, it will screw up your bandwidth. if u upgrade toa dual band router, it may fix your problem. 3) if it is up to 15 megabits, then you ought to at least get a certain percentage (around 60-70). if not, you can ask for your money back for the months that you didn't get it.
Is it in you?

BECAUSE YOU MUST BE GETTING 15 MEGABITS per second. THE OTHER MUST BE 1.6 MEGABYTES per second. So you are getting more than you need.
