Charles Taylor was a pretty bad guy, but Samuel Doe wasn't so great either. He was the first ethnically native ruler, but he got to be that way through a military coup (after 140 years of republic, if a dysfunctional one) and then a disputed election that it seems certain he lost. His government was pretty repressive (at one point killing 2000 civilians in repressing a counter-coup), which is why Charles Taylor had the support he did, despite being not the greatest guy himself. Of course his government then turned out even worse D: I just don't find it entirely accurate to treat Taylor as someone sent in by the CIA or whoever to overthrow the popularly elected leader, since Doe wasn't elected, and wasn't popular. Of course, the whole thing turned to shit, which should be a lesson about messing with things. | ||

It's always good to be skeptical about these things, but Liberia is a seriously fucked up place. Here's a BBC article about "General Butt Naked". There's always a certain element of exaggeration that comes along with these stories, but there isn't much doubt in that these cases are at least somewhat based on truth. I didn't watch the video about Bulgaria but the conditions/stories they have in this documentary obviously aren't total lies. Western Africa is one of the most messed up areas in the world and home to some of the largest UN peacekeeping efforts to date because of this. | ||
