Settling in There are local Malaysian Chinese around and other national citizens which are fairly capable of speaking in English or Chinese. If they don't then you'll know when it happens. If possible, try not to make yourself stand out like a tourist. That way you don't entice trouble from potential thieves. If you are to take a taxi, BEWARE of touts. Always take a metered taxi or they will rip you off. What to see? The KL Twin Towers (KLCC). That is our pride to say the least. If you want, you can check out Cyberjaya or Putrajaya but be forewarned on transport for these. Another good place would be Time Square and Low Yat Plaza (Next door lol) There's a lot of things you can find there. Low Yat is the market core of Malaysia's IT and electronics. The best prices and availability is there. It's quite accessible also using the light rail transit and monorail systems. How much $$ do I need to live / eat comfortably? You can get a decent meal with drink for under RM10 (approximate 20RMB if i recall exchange rate right). If you eat at the shopping centres or classier places then expect the price to be RM10 and above. Worst case scenario, you can eat and push for RM5 and below (Drink is ice or warm water only). These stalls are usually Chinese or Indian style stalls. They aren't the best aesthetically but they serve as important points to just get good food at good prices. EDIT: Chinese food is also there, so if you cant take the other local food, there's always backup Hope this helps :D

I will be staying on Jalan Pinang road, which I've told is in the city centre. When people say Chinese do they mean mandarin or cantonese?

I find 1 of the common warning I get is of thieves/pick pockets, damn dts everywhere I will be staying on Jalan Pinang road, which I've told is in the city centre. When people say Chinese do they mean mandarin or cantonese? You're quite near the KLCC Twin Towers. It's within walking distance (about 5 - 10 mins) and you can't really miss it :p. Since your near the city centre, food prices will not be very low unless you find the right places. Ask your future colleagues for those if possible. Expect a lot of vehicle traffic so its better to use monorail or Light rail transit. There's one within the Twin towers itself. And yes, there's always DTs everywhere.
