Nobody talked to me at least about this change. I'll talk to flamewheel about it. I think this means we're going to have to make a few changes to the forum rules though (for example our permabanned users can now access this forum again - we will need rules about not letting them into games even if you aren't following the ban list). I'll talk to flamewheel when he gets on next and then make a thread about it.

This bothers me a lot, I feel like they should have at least consulted with us before just throwing open the gates... Give me a chance to talk to flamewheel and ITW first. I'm really hoping this forum will have something like strategy forum bans so we can at least moderate traffic in the forum a bit. I'm going to have to think about this more to figure out all of the implications of this.

I think that we should make a "new players" thread (stickied?) where newbies can ask questions. It'd eliminate pre-game spam (some people really don't like it) and create another resource for new players. The rules and tips thing is great, but it doesn't answer specific questions. Thoughts? I agree that we should let Qatol talk to Flamewheel and ITW before we start asking in website feedback.

But, my feeling is that the mods will have more to do banning people that post randomly in game-threads and stuff, than they had to do when they allowed people access.

This wasn't a particularly huge problem when the mafia games were played in Sports & Games. It was more of one when they were played in General. That being said, it just means that the hosts will have to keep that out of the game as much as they can. If someone won't go away, we can report them (something that wasn't around back in the old days) and hopefully it will be dealt with quickly. EDIT: I thought about it a bit more and realized that Sports and Games was before SC2 was announced and TL membership increased at least tenfold. I guess we will just have to see how big of a problem this becomes.

I mean I don't mind so much if people want to browse games but I agree you should have to jump through a hoop or something before you're allowed to play. I don't think there are any forums on TL where people can see but cannot post other than Closed (where every thread has been manually locked). You can pretty much assume that if they can see, they can post.

There is also a link that appears for this forum if you click on Sports & Games on the side bar.

Unfourtunately the sudden influx will have no knowledge of rules our customs and may not feel bound by a modkill. We should seriously think about a change to our system. Unfourtunately my life got unexpectedly busy but I'll try and make a thread within a day or two where we can discuss potential fixes. Let me talk to flamewheel and ITW before we do that kind of thing. Also I think you are overreacting a little bit. It isn't like we don't have new people coming to the forum regularly. If a new host is completely ignoring the system for no good reason, we can ask the staff to step in or just boycott the game (or a combination of the two). If it is a player, we can just refuse to let them play and if they cause problems beyond that, ask the staff to step in.

Perhaps I am overreacting but I'm actually pretty pissed they didn't tell us first. At least you or flamewheel, people the staff know run our forum, should have been told.

If not i'm very dissapointed

I wasn't told but I don't think it's that big of a deal. Just have to rewrite some stuff and sticky some other stuff.

But yea no reason to get worked up about it yet. If some games end up getting messed up by this I am sure we will be able to get the admins to make the forum hidden again.

Original Message From Plexa: The intention has always been that the mafia forum was public. The only reason it was made private in the first place was so that it could appear in the forum index (which was supposed to help in reducing the number of dropouts) without bothering the majority of people. Keeping it private was unfeasible from a staff perspective as well. So when we thought up a way to present forums in the forum index without it clogging things up for everyone else we went for it. I don't see why it would be a bad thing anyway, since the forum was essentially open access.
