My fear of needles is nowhere near as comparable to my fear of spiders (seriously, I cower and start crying if I see one....it's kinda sad)...but one of the tattoos I've been most wanting is a spider....I don't know why. Erm.... haha you got issues homie!!! If you stay away from skin on bone areas (top of shoulder blade, shins, elbows, ribs, etc) , it's hardly anything at all. I was real apprehensive about mine as well, and I honestly had more trouble twitching from it tickling because I was a retard and popped a few painkillers prior to going because i thought it would hurt like a bitch... The most i had was minor pain and that was really only when the one part of my tat touched my shoulder blade and when the shading was being done at the end (it was a 3hr session almost, so my skin was nice and raw by that point) dont get something stupid just to test your pain tolerance. only get something that you really really really want, make sure it has real meaning and it's not in a retarded spot and just man up

Whatever you do, develop a relationship with an artist. You want to know for a fact that they are interested in you and the tattoo that they are providing you. If you just show up and piece something together out of a book... most of the time their attitude will be "meh." So on your to-do list. 1. Contact local artists. Find one whose style you like. Talk to former/regular customers. This isn't a tattoo, it's a relationship. 2. Check out the parlor. Do they have an autoclave? Do that have needles in abundance? Do they have medical grade soap/disinfectant? 3. Once you've chosen on an artist schedule an appointment for artwork. You can bring in sketches, ideas, whatever. By this point, however, you should have an idea as to their 'style'. So unless it's a major change, I typically defer to whatever my artist recommends. For your first tattoo I would avoid any area with a lot of nerve endings or near a bone. Stick to arms. Also, if you get something on your arm make sure that it'll flow into a full sleeve should you want that down the road. Your tattoo artist can help with that.

+ Show Spoiler + Keeping in mind that the coolest tattoos are the ones you can actually tell a story about which doesn't just involve your trip to the tattoo shop. So probably the spider. Or a dead bear, since then you can claim you used to train by killing bears in the mountains.

You drink or take any sort of pain killer, it's thinning your blood. More blood loss. Higher chance of infection. Plus, I'm pretty sure the ink + something in your blood stream isn't going to mix too well. Why add more risk when you can just take it like a man and get it over with? I have extremely low pain tolerance, and it wasn't the worst feeling ever.
