There are stories about this kind of thing (in general terms) being not uncommon in the jpop industry as well.

Horrifying and profoundly depressing.

Hope those responsible really get what they deserve. Somehow I feel pessimistic but I can hope.

Edit: I'm wondering now if I have to make an ethical decision to stop consuming kpop. Sigh...

It's odd how this part of Korean Society contrasts with American society where there seems to be a lot more freedom for actors in their contracts. Sounds like Korea needs to revolutionize their entertainment industry with unions!

If you think this shit doesn't happen in America you are a fool. There are plenty of small "talent agencies" in the US that do this sort of thing. I don't know how pervasive it is in Korea (if the top stars have to pull this shit too) but it happens at the "low levels" so to speak of both countries.

You never know what other men she "serviced". Considering the list wasn't fully released, people in law enforcement might have been on it and it would help to reduce the sentences of the men involved in it.

Typical Korean contracts force you to pay if you want to opt out of your contract (if they don't kick you out). The published FTC ruling on SM Entertainment forced the money to be (Average salery earned/month)*(number of months left in contract). Of course this was more recently and hers could have been more severe. Also note the absurd math here; unless their contract is almost up (and I don't think hers was) there's almost no way you could pay that with what you were making.

Also she was suffering from depression, so this may not have been the only reason she committed suicide.

It's why I never understand why people say they want to become famous. I'm a musician, but if I ever wanted to make a living out of it (and I don't) I sure as hell wouldn't sign to a label (here in the US at least). The internet and shit makes it entirely possible for you to promote and make money without a label (providing usual amounts of luck and talent). Sure you don't have the chance to become truly fucking rich but any musician I respect doesn't really do it for the money. Sure the money is nice but I know a bunch of people who don't really care as long as they can keep playing, have a roof over their heads, etc. Those are the musicians I respect, not the dudes who are talentless yet make it big and then spend the rest of their careers rapping about their wealth.
