There is rampant inflation in "rape statistics" by these groups. Figures like 1/4 women etc are thrown around a lot.
Yes a 16 year old and and 18 year old having consensual sex is consided rape by the law. Or on a survey having sex with your husband when you dont quite feel like it, they can extrapolate rape. On the same side of the coin see the duke rape case etc.
It goes on quite simply because they feel nothing wrong with creating "epidemics / fear mongering" to get more funding and reaction.
also those surveys they use are way out of date

actually if a woman is forced into sex (doesnt want to have sex) it doesnt matter if its her husband or not. also physical force isnt a requirement for something to be rape hth

16 is a normal age of consent in most states.
Just because one incident (duke rape case) the defendents were found not guilty doesn't mean
1) the accuser was lying.
2) All rape cases are false accusations.

yes obviously, It doesn't change the fact RAINN does everything possible to pump out the highest percentages possible (for more funding/awareness) it's only logical they do this. Hence they use statistics from the late 90s.
Rape has declined 2/3rds in the last 15 years in america or something close to that along with most violent crimes. Again I linked a statistic that showed the estimated number of forcible and by threat rapes which is much smaller than a 1/6 woman are raped statistic

Has a good overview of the topic, but the statistics for rape, where someone can pull out 1/4 or 1/6 women are raped is just a little too high of a % to be believable, hence I have researched this before.
sadly debating the accuracy of said statistics and the methods they gather them is a big no no by anyone and a good way to get fired as a professor or reporter because inflating the statistics only helps charities like RAINN / awareness.

Not really. In most states the age of consent is 16. And the federal law usually requires a 4 year age difference anyways.

Firstly, its almost impossible to fire a professor. Secondly underreporting rape only helps the FBI. It is a common government tactic to report decrease in annual crime for political gain. It is certianly a lot more common than charities and ngos infalting statistics. These NGOs are staffed by people who care about the problem (and often former victims). Governments are staffed by people who only care about themselves. You can believe whomever you want to ofcourse, but doesn't change the facts.

Basically the "fabrication" claims of the letter where bullshit and some experts from SBS and a second source confirm it's her handwriting and has details only she could know about.
AKA Korean Government/police are trying to cover it up, while SBS and others re-confirm it's true.
Will be interesting to see what happens because some of the names on the list are top 50 richest people in korea and almost all are big CEOs/producers. My personal guess is nothing because of how corrupt the investigation has already been.

The most eye opening thing in this thread is the number of people for whom this is a shocking/unimagined incident.
People fooling themselves into thinking this is in any way unusual, or isolated to a country/area/industry.
A sad sampling of how many people can be ignorant, willfully or otherwise, of the tragedies around them.
Most here of course are outraged, and that makes perfect sense. But you'd be a fool to think you're very far removed from it.
Arguing about which 'rape statistics' one chooses to believe is frankly a sign of exactly what's wrong. Trying to minimize how prevalent these incidents are can only cause more problems. Is it really possible to have TOO MUCH awareness of sexual assault? Really?
To head off drama I should add: It's important that false accusations and knee jerk reactions be carefully managed. Because it is something that gets people up in arms, it's easy to call for blood before having the facts. It's that first reaction that ruins the lives of some people due to an accusation. All cases should be carefully examined BEFORE authorities AND the masses pass judgement.

I haven't particularly been following this line of conversation you are having, but regarding this comment... not exactly true. It is almost impossible to fire a professor for any reason that is not political in nature, but it's actually quite easy to get fired if you upset the apple cart.
Academia is incredibly political. Don't ever think your professors only got where they are through superior understanding of their subject. Even in fields like math and physics where politics simply don't belong the ugly truth is that you can't avoid it. It's unfortunate but it's true.
Sorry for threadjacking (although I did comment on topic much earlier in the thread). It's very unfortunate that the authorities aren't taking this tragedy more seriously.
