Shanghai sex scandal rocks Korean diplomats

South Korea's government says it has launched an investigation into an alleged steamy sex-for-favours scandal that has rocked its consulate in Shanghai.

Such a sad story, its truly a shame that two years had to pass before it started getting the attention it deserved.

I remember hearing about this shortly after watching Boys Over Flowers 6 months ago, and it still shocks me. Although her character had a minor role, I didn't think anything like this would happen. Hopefully things will change.

if this happened to someone i know, i'd go on a vigilant rampage.

please talk to your lady friends and try to prevent this happening to them.
it could be from their friend, boyfriend, w/e. teach them to have guts in not lowering themselves even if it means they can't get what they want. of course, there will be girls that wouldn't think twice about sleeping with another guy if it means she can get what she wants.

I don't believe you intend this but when you say "have guts" and to not lower themselves you seem to imply that the person being sexually abused is somehow responsible for causing or has to power to aviod the situation ,which in the majority of cases is simply not true.

I hope people like JYP can stand up and set up new standards to protect entertainers from shit like this.

Whut? JYP? If someone can save this industry, I don't think it is JYP.

What? All that speculation just from a smile?? Or am i missing something?
I repect for him for what he has achieved and was hoping he shares the same views as majority of other people but who knows. :/
Ive liked him since he was a co-mc in "friday night" and regarded him as a decent human being but i could be wrong. But i sincerely hope someone within the industry starts a union like organization to protect themselves. This event should not repeat.

^shouldn't but does around the world. The U.S. has unions for actors and this shit still does happen, because there are too many small companies and bit actors/actresses to keep track of them all.
That being said, if that list is true there's a hell of a lot of insanely powerful people on there and I hope they get what they deserve.

while this may be true, I think there's also a possibility that money changed hands for this conclusion to be drawn; after all, some hella important people were named on those letters.

We should all realize this is probably indicative of a much larger problem.

If her story is true, I'm sure it's all too common with the entertainment industry there.

So why is it when something awful happens outside of the US, people talk about the COUNTRY, like:

"12 cats butchered by crazy man in Germany"
"Girl gang raped by 20 men in China"

Then people talk about how messed up that country is. Then when something happens in the US, people just talk about crazy/bad people and don't bring up country. Why did this story need to be about S. Korea? Sexual harassment in the workplace doesn't take place in the states? No actress in America has ever been coerced into sex for a job/role? I'm confused what delusional world you people are living in.

Now, about the GIRL, it is a tragedy this happened and that there was no one to help her. I hope the men are punished brutally, but that is too much to hope.

Well, it's the entertainment industry. Some move from supporting roles to main roles, and vise versa. There must be reason behind all the promotions; and some of those reasons don't actually sound really good. It's actually pretty common in real life.

If you actually read the thread, you'd know that plenty of people have said that this isn't a South Korean phenomenon.

REAL FBI NUMBERS

Forcible rape, as defined in the FBIโ€™s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, is the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will. Attempts or assaults to commit rape by force or threat of force are also included; however, statutory rape (without force) and other sex offenses are excluded.

# The rate of forcible rapes in 2009 was estimated at 56.6 per 100,000 female inhabitants, a 3.4 percent decrease when compared with the 2008 estimated rate of 58.6.

the UCR severely under reports crimes..
for example rape + murder should be counted as 2 crimes but in the UCR its counted as one and as murder only. Its what they call the dark figure of crime.. using the UCR as a basis of statistics is almost absolute crap. Rape is the #1 under reported crime in the U.S. and im not disagreeing with your RAINN statistics since i dont know about it at all.

I wouldnt be.
You always get some scraps of the big picture from time to time on the news. A model molested here an actress there and so on. I dont think you can get into the entertainment/model industry as a woman without sexual favors. It is the sad truth.

I have no idea how famous this girl was, but I've heard of many cases outside South Korea (mainly from Denmark, since I live there) about young models and such with dreams of becoming super models being abused sexually. It's obviously disgusting, but I just wanted to mention it because it seems like some people think this is specific to South Korea - It's not.

This isn't a South Korean phenomenon, but it's still particularly strong in Korea and Japan because of theire culture. There are no "idols" in Europ. For example, France never has stories like this, maybe in the fashion world but that's more international.

This only happenss in places of big money dreams!

Because corruption in general is a huge issue in korea (huge in the sense that its huge compared to other developed countries). People with money and power in the country have too much leverage that they easily get away with crime.

I really don't want to ruin this thread about 'corruption' but police have stated this supposed 'letter' is highly likely to be a hoax (found an evidence). Netizen have responded, it's probably pressure from higher power.
Source: http://news.sportsseoul.com/read/entertain/924051.htm

mmhmmm...

EDIT:
More Sources: http://www.munhwa.com/news/view.html?no=2011031001070843015002&w=nv
According to this, the envelope is where the evidence was found, now the writings on the letter are being analysed and the result will be known by next week.

Yes, corruption is everywhere, very likely in korean entertainment ind. However let's wait and before jumping to conclusions pplz.

Forcible rape is not the only type of rape. Coercive rape is rape. Child rape is rape. Non consensual sex of any kind is rape. Sex with people who can't give consent is rape.

I also love how you quote something as retarded as "other sex offenses are excluded".

Also before you criticize rainn note that they actually had references for all the stats.
