I've heard that cabal is pretty good. I haven't played it myself. Pardus is a good MMO. Its a space game, the graphics suck, but there a large alliances and its fun trading. The combat system is just pressing buttons, but there is always fighting (right now there is a war going on). Think of it as a primitive version of Eve, but everyone is nice instead of cutthroat

It wasn't exactly bad, comboing and fighting was pretty cool, but content-wise it sucked, you couldn't do much after a few weeks playing, and the quests were just ridiculously simple in structure (grind grind grind, go kill 10 of those). The highlight of the game was when you had to clear certain dungeon challenges in a set amount of time, with intense music and shit.

Pretty involving and not simply grindquests, cool bosses and stuff. Personally I've looked around for a good MMO to waste time with, but I haven't found any to my liking. Guild Wars 2 is promising and I'll probably wait for that release.

LOTR is having a second wind with the f2p thing, there are interesting mechanics in it, and you should find people to enjoy the game with. I would say go for it, might grab you. If you are willing to pay a one time fee for the cd-key tho, steam has a crap ton of games, be it single or multiplayer.

I mean, Lord of The Rings probably feels the least grindy, but in reality it takes longer to level. Aion is a total grindfest. Runescape is a grind fest. Cabal, and the rest of the free Korean MMORPGS are all 100% grind, with no other content. Take it from someone thats played pretty much every MMO ever. If you've got that "I wanna play an MMO but I want to have fun" play Diablo 2. I'm not the biggest Diablo fan, but it satisfies that urge to make and level a character, without devoting your life to it.
