Update 9/1/2010
Graduate studies have started for me, and considering that I'm balancing significant work hours along with a full course load, the amount of free time I have has plummeted, enough for me to seriously consider giving up on playing games to any significant degree. As a direct relation, I'd imagine the amount of time I'll spend killing by browsing TL will drop for the noticeable future, particularly until I've settled into a groove and become better at squeezing out random time. That means the odds of me seeing a spontaneous, specific post in this huge, fast-moving thread saying your name is going to be very low. Please PM me name information, any links you think I should add, etc. I'd also appreciate it if someone pm'd me links to recent updates and TR notes as seen fit; I'd love to keep up to date but I can't promise I can keep on top of it as fast as most people checking up on this thread. Thanks for the help in keeping this OP updated :D
love, your friendly thread-starter

What is LoL and why LoL?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzMnCv_lPxI&feature=player_embedded

+ Show Spoiler +
League of Legends is a MOBA game, essentially what most people call DotA/HoN - the two more well-known variations (although evidently LoL is climbing up that ladder quite a lot, as it's usually 2x/3x more popular on XFire and won more GotY awards /brag). It was designed by some of the bigger names in the DotA scene, including Zileas and Guinsoo. More information (and the game itself) can be found at the webpage:

http://www.leagueoflegends.com/

One of the top concerns from most people is the cost of the game.
The game is free. It uses a micro-transaction system that is not necessary to be competitive. At all. You use money to unlock heroes (which you can already do via "Influence Points" that are rewarded upon game completion), to buy different skins for heroes (to look different), and to get temporary XP/IP boosts - the former of which becomes useless once you hit the level 30 cap, anyways.

Why do we play this game instead of DotA/HoN?
Probably the second-most asked question. The difference between DotA and LoL are laid out on their page: http://www.leagueoflegends.com/articles/dota_and_lol
but most people want to ask for our direct opinions, and we've been more than happy to give it.

1) Significantly faster ability cooldowns, mana regeneration rates, ability costs, and high base maximum mana, as well as the existence of heroes that don't even rely on mana at all, result in skirmishes, harassment, and fights that seemingly end in a flash. In a way it's like comparing Starcraft to Warcraft 3.
2) The lack of denying creep means lane control as you know it from DotA is no longer as dominant. Almost every hero has some means of establishing "zone control" and punishing the other player for overstepping their bounds. That doesn't mean you can't zone people out - there are clearly matchups and heroes designed to be better at zoning than others, and if you're a pure melee hero against a very, very strong laner you're going to cry. But it's not the end-all-be-all, and skilled players often find ways to get around these issues, anyways.
3) The end result of the above two is a game that is aggressive and dangerous from the start. Level 1/2 first bloods are not uncommon at all, and in a particularly fast game you could be looking at 10-20 kills in the first 10 minutes. Games, particularly lopsided ones, often end in 25 minutes (in 5v5), with the majority of "good" games ending around the 35 minute mark. This is a far cry from DotA where games routinely stretched into the 40s and 50s, with most "earlier" ends coming from forfeits.
4) Ability Power, a stat that boosts spells, means there's no stupid Str = Tank Agility = Carry Int = Early-game power late-game disable hierarchy. Almost every hero is capable of carrying a team, and whilst some are obviously better at doing this than others, it means you're not punished for liking Crystal Maiden etc. anymore. That doesn't mean it's a good idea to play tank on an innately squishy hero, but you're almost always going to be "viable" as the game goes on.
5) Various gameplay enhancements, such as the ability to buy while dead, the ability to blue pill (8-second spell to teleport to fountain), easier shop system (no need to buy recipe items individually), an easier hotkey system (1-6, qwer, dfb), etc. Yes, the minimap is on the right side. No, I'm pretty sure the majority of us don't mind it, much less even realize it after a few games.
6) Balance. Yes, this is a hairy topic that's often debated, will forever be debated, and will never end, but it deserves mentioning. Riot has been very aggressive, although sometimes incorrect, about balancing. In my opinion they have done a very good job. Even two months ago it was possible for people to develop a "tier list" to rank heroes as per their relative strength. Nowadays I think you could poke holes in pretty much every tier list, as there are almost no more "godly" heroes left, and those that are left are being attended to as we speak. Weaker heroes are constantly being reworked in an effort to make them viable. For a competitive game, this is very important, and contributes heavily to a game's lifespan.

Where is everyone?
Join LiquidParty!

Detailed instructions: Click the speech bubble icon in the bottom left next to the Friends bar. Click the button near the bottom and join LiquidParty (case insensitive, and apparently punctuation insensitive too).
Once in the LiquidParty chat thingy, click the gear in the top right corner (of the message box, not the LoL client!) and enable Autojoin on Startup.

LiquidParty is most active around 4 PM CET it seems.

There is also a LiquidParty for the EU client.

No one is responding in LP!
Particularly as a new player one of the things you'll have to get used to is that Automated Matchmaking means it is implicitly more difficult to play with players of different skill. From my experience LP is relatively lively, but there're going to be times when it's filled with AFK people, so don't mind that (unless you live in an obscure timezone). Back to the point, what ends up happening is that groups of players are more likely to play with each other and far, far less likely to play with others. This gets further complicated by the innate difficulties of a competitive team game, where you're always going to have to fight with the different motivations and egos of different players. You may just be wanting to learn the ropes. They may be wanting to get one win to shake off their losing streak, or "slump." This combination will often end in tears. Re: the Automated Matchmaking, as an anti-smurf measure as well as to weigh pre-made teams, the game automatically assigns a "bonus" to the average Elo (hidden) of the pre-arranged team. That means if someone with an Elo of 1600 pairs with someone with an Elo of 1000, the game may assign an extra 300 just to make sure this isn't a smurf, then as a pairing penalty may assign further 50 to the average, which would be (1600+1300)/2 = 1450. So that means when you go into a game, the two of you are considered 1500 rating players. While for the 1600 this may not seem like a bad proposition, the reality is that the 1000 player is going to find themselves bewildered by the faster pace of the game. This, too, leads to tears.

The only real way around this problem is to rack up games, and get closer to level 30, at which point more people will be receptive to welcoming you into their parties, at least to give you a shot. The alternative is to find kind souls that are willing to smurf and/or don't care about winning.

Regarding the usage of IP
There are many, many different veins of thought on this conundrum, so I'm not going to preach anything over the other. I'll simply explain the options to you.

Utahime should probably put on the front page that players should at least try champions during Free Week before actually investing the IP.

Something like 10 heroes are free every week, and this free hero selection changes every week. This means for the most part, you'll have a decent set of heroes to choose from and play around with as you start out. You may find that you like a particular hero a lot. If you decide you like a particular hero a lot, go ahead and buy it. But be aware that a lot of your impressions of a hero are bound to change the more you play. For example, there might be someone fawning over Tryndamere. Then he might start running into better players, who would ignore him in teamfights (wrecking his usefulness), then crowd control him to death. Slowly, he finds that he cannot farm up into critical mass on Tryndamere without significant aid from his teammates, and even farmed he cannot "do his job" sufficiently in teamfights. He slowly begins to understand what it means to be "a melee DPS not named Jax."

Or, he might rampage with Tryndamere anyways, finding himself attuned to the weird hero that is Tryndamere, and become a god of Tryndameres. And when things become more difficult, he might find ways around it, and become a very good Tryndamere player.

You never know until you try, but the moral of the story is, things change. Especially after the first 200-300 games.

What day do the heroes all swap around for selection?
Usually around Wednesday.

I'm tired of playing ____ and want to pick up a nuker, what's good?
Starting off by defining nuker as a heavy damage-dealing caster...

Probably the most consistent nuker pick is Annie. Played right, she has two AoE stuns, on top of strong lane control (via nuking combo threat), has a relatively easy time farming, doesn't have mana problems if you can last-hit properly, and has a skill that ups her survivability greatly.

Ryze and Anivia are probably next on the list, as they both also apply heavy amounts of damage. Ryze is hampered by being a glass cannon with 0 survivability, but played well (especially against newbies) his AoE burst is pretty unparalleled. Anivia takes considerably more finesse and may need runes to be at peak efficiency, but she has the best combination of crowd control and damage output of straight nukers.

Fiddlesticks is one of the best casters but he requires a lot of teamwork to pull off, and he's much more of a crowd-control-but than a nuker. Veigar, Kassadin, AP Shaco, AP, Gragas, AP Sion, Karthus, etc there're plenty of options but the three listed above are probably the most straight-forward and least skill-intensive.

Did they really fix Pantheon's bug?

Runes
Different people have different opinions of the effect of runes, but pretty much everyone is unanimous that having runes gives you an advantage over someone who doesn't have runes. So the question is, when do you start buying them?

Mogwai's opinion is,
Honestly, they aren't worth buying until you hit summoner level 20 when you can buy tier 3 runes which will give you good mileage (they're strictly better than the ones you can buy up until that point) and by that point, you should have an idea of what would be useful in a rune page (and you can ask here, we've got a pretty good idea of what's the best way to build rune pages for most champs).

Some people argue tier 1 runes are relatively cheap, but you cannot sell runes and they'll be dead weight once you hit level 20. The choice is yours.

On July 01 2010 01:52 Shikyo wrote:
Tier 1 runes have about 55% of the efficiency of tier 3 runes. A full tier 1 runeset for a lvl 14 costs about 700-800 ip. Easily worth it.

What runes are good?
This is an ever-changing set of opinions, particularly as the game evolves.
As a whole, stat per level runes tend to be more cost-effective than flat stat runes. You can do the math yourself, but you'll pretty consistently hit at least level 10 in games (usually you'll end games level 15-18) so take that as you will. You'll have to do your own studies to figure out how much time is spent before a per level rune overtakes a flat rune, especially as different stats scale differently.

You're also probably going to be better off asking specifically about runes for a particular hero in this thread, because there usually isn't an "end-all be-all" set. But for people who might want a quick answer, the runes I have currently are,

Marks: Armor Pen, Magic Pen, HP per level, Crit Chance, Crit Damage (I don't use this anymore)
Seals: HP per level, Dodge, Mana Regen per level
Glyphs: HP per level, Mana Regen per level, Cooldown per level
Quints: Flat HP

How does penetration/reduction work?
As of the most recent changes,
(Total Armor/MR - Flat Reduction/Pen) then modified by % penetration.

Your abbreviations confuse me!
AP - ability power
AD - attack damage
MP, MPen, Magic Pen - magic penetration (tbh i get confused sometimes when ppl use MP to talk about Magic Penetration instead of Magic Points, but like 90% of the time they are talking about Magic Penetration - see its context)
AP, APen, Armor Pen - armor penetration
Flat MP(HP) - usually comes about in the context of discussing runes that give a constant boost to your Mana Points (Hit Points)
MP(HP) per level, MP/level - when discussing runes that give a boost to your MP (HP) equal to the amount * your champion's level
MP(HP)p5, MP/5 - MP (HP) regenerated every five seconds
Mp5pl - MP regeneration per level runes
BD - backdooring, or running around the other team's heroes and/or creeps to attack their buildings/towers
CD - cooldown or cooldown reduction, depending on context
AS - attack speed
MR - magic resist
SR - Summoner's Rift, the 5v5 map
TT - Twisted Treeline, the 3v3 map
MM - Matchmaking

How effective is 15% mpen via Masteries as opposed to the pure 5% damage increase?

Friendly advice to newbies/low Elo players from HeavOnEarth
On July 06 2010 09:00 HeavOnEarth wrote:
*Advice mostly for low elo players who cannot win solo queue games*
Some tips are:
-Look around the map a LOT
there should be no reason you are hard pressed to never look around the map IMO , unless you are slow clickywise., playing a global ult character will help you maintain this, which helps a lot when you are in mid and see a chance to gank and can react asaply.
You can direct your jungler to help the 1v2 lane if u know hes going to get roflstomped soon, or the 2v2 lane, or even yourself in middle. You could see/hear the camp path of the enemy jungler, and let your jungler know that the enemy jungler is taking blue buff , or even dragon. Or when you see that lizard camp disappear, and u see the 2v2 laners pushing way too far out - give them a heads up.

-Keep an eye on the minimap 100%
Also, just visual things can help a lot-
for example, neutral buffs. I 100% always see a neutal camp respawn or disappear within the second it happens and react accordingly- as im sure every single person from my elo does.
So when u see dragon spawn, ping it ASAP, and tell everyone in the area to get there. This alone will win low elo rank games.

When a tower falls, and everyones scattered and disorganized, call for a 5man push in middle or roam and tell them all to follow you. If you have been doig well (IE you're like 2-0 or something) , people will generally respond very well. Make sure the blue/red buff goes to appropriate persons(low elo people are very unaware) and then push

Aside from awareness- some people just DO NOT respond to any advice or critism, so you have to realize, if matchmaking is even remotely fair, they have a person of equal retardedness on their team. Grab a snowballing item , IE mejais/ sword of occult, and gank them repeatedly. Low ELO matchs are usually who can abuse the feeders, and protect their own as much as possible.

How did you get the nifty artwork?

Player List

I'm trying to keep this player list as updated as possible, but (un)fortunately I can't lord over this thread (nor the past one) perfectly. If I've missed a name, post or PM me. I'm also going to try to make a separate list for EU, but I'm going to assume non-attributed names are from the US Client. If you're on the EU list but you're on the US list, point it out to me and/or just tell me you're from the EU, and I'll add you to the EU list.

Nice post Southlight... Fresh thread for fresh chapter in Teamliquid LoL. We're getting more and more people in channel all the time and some great new players.

Also, couldn't do a TL tourney this weekend b/c of work, but next weekend we'll resume having in-house TL tournaments! =)

Hello guys! I had been planning on making a new OP for the League of Legends thread for a while.. Thanks for taking the initiative, Southlight!

I'll take this spot to point out that I'm on the EU realm, not US. Any EU-ers are welcome to invite me for a game. If you're low ELO I'll play my smurf. Hope to see you guys in game!

Added a News section, that'll make tracking Gozey's IH updates easier. As always if I miss an important give me a heads up, especially now that we can link directly to posts :x

You could always link to the old thread somewhere, as a nice gesture to psyonic reaver , and more importantly, shows the new people that this isn't something new , we've been around for a while ~

I actually stuck it at the end of the newbie FAQ, didn't know where else to put it without it looking out of place

If anyone wants to add me on the EU client -> summoner name is My Allies Suck

Feel free to add me whether you suck or not. I have literally 0 friends and am just solo queuing. People are terrible. im only level 7, i got this yesterday. Was playing dota/HoN before but it went retail and i'll probably buy it after the summer or something. But im really liking LoL so far.

EDIT: i know 0 item builds so don't ask me about any of that. just using recommended items and reading through the other items whenever im dead. Trying to play every hero once.

Also, what day do the heroes all swap around for selection?

So, I'm playing on both servers under FatalTragedy, tho my US account is like level 7 cause i really can't stand playing with much lag... how do EU guys playing on US servers do to reduce it? Do you just cope with it?

Just a question about buying champions, is there a period where certain champions will be cheaper than others? (I notice Ashe, Nunu and a couple of others are only 415 IP, so I took advantage of this and bought Ashe).
