Just looking for some recommendations for free MMORPGs, I'm terribly bored, and this laptop can barely run Starcraft 2, so I want a game to play that will eat up time and be decently fun.

That's not an MMO it's a DOTA clone.

Maplestory is meh. Takes a loong time to level. But at the same time, you actually get to fight and there's plenty of fun things you can do.

I've heard that cabal is pretty good. I haven't played it myself.

Pardus is a good MMO. Its a space game, the graphics suck, but there a large alliances and its fun trading. The combat system is just pressing buttons, but there is always fighting (right now there is a war going on). Think of it as a primitive version of Eve, but everyone is nice instead of cutthroat

Can you give us a few details on what suits you best? PvP, PvE, slow/fast pacing, quests/grind, does it need a story, solo/group play, theme, 3rd/1st person, "looks like" game X...

Let's say I have a "search tool" (aka my friend) to help with that

Maplestory was fun for a bit, but the grinding just gets monotonous. I'm looking for something along the lines of WoW, just.... not as grindy? ;p

Haha, if you can get a group of friends to rofl around with, Maplestory is definitely very fun

A while ago, a bunch of us played Aika Online, which was alright... meh

I've played cabal, but in open beta. It wasn't exactly bad, comboing and fighting was pretty cool, but content-wise it sucked, you couldn't do much after a few weeks playing, and the quests were just ridiculously simple in structure (grind grind grind, go kill 10 of those). The highlight of the game was when you had to clear certain dungeon challenges in a set amount of time, with intense music and shit.

Yes, LOTR online is free, and pretty good for a free MMO. Pretty involving and not simply grindquests, cool bosses and stuff.

Personally I've looked around for a good MMO to waste time with, but I haven't found any to my liking. Guild Wars 2 is promising and I'll probably wait for that release.

Aika tries to copy wow in many ways, it's an OK game, the walking can get boring and combat a bit repetitive.

LOTR is having a second wind with the f2p thing, there are interesting mechanics in it, and you should find people to enjoy the game with. I would say go for it, might grab you.

If you are willing to pay a one time fee for the cd-key tho, steam has a crap ton of games, be it single or multiplayer.

Then you're not looking for an MMO as WoW is the least grindy MMO anyone could possibly suggest. I mean, Lord of The Rings probably feels the least grindy, but in reality it takes longer to level. Aion is a total grindfest. Runescape is a grind fest. Cabal, and the rest of the free Korean MMORPGS are all 100% grind, with no other content.

Take it from someone thats played pretty much every MMO ever. If you've got that "I wanna play an MMO but I want to have fun" play Diablo 2. I'm not the biggest Diablo fan, but it satisfies that urge to make and level a character, without devoting your life to it.

First, have you ever played Wow? because after that at least all free mmos are shitty, no exceptions.
If not, then you might wanna try out Runes of Magic or Allods Online.

Cabal should have been a better game if the initial NA host (OGPlanet) did a better job managing it. Unfortunately they didn't, the game fucked itself with hackers and botters and shit, and now it's... shit. I suggest you wait for Cabal 2 when it should be released NA about mid- or late- 2011.

Then maybe you are searching in the wrong place and MMO isn't your genre. Because in WoW it's pretty easy to grind up to the max level but games like Cabal or Silkroad or Aion...it's hell.

LoL is an MMO but not an RPG in the sense that very little of what you do game to game is carried over... and there is no persistent world.

Maplestory isn't that grind if you can find some friends to party with. It used to be crazy grind, but now, it's actually really easy. You do the island quests (which teach you the game mechanics and give you sick new items) until you are level 8/10.

Then, you can pretty much quest your way to level 21. Or just hang with some friends at pig beach or training grounds. (probably takes 3-4 hours to get to level 21 if you know what you're doing. So this part is the grindiest).

Then when you get to level 21 you just play PQ until 31. It's super fun, if you know how to play. You get cool items and can use stupid emoticons to piss your teammates off. It's all very hilarious.

Then you can do the vanilla quests from 31 to 35. This again takes like 3-4 hours if you know what you're doing. Pretty annoying imo.

Then 35-51 you can just do CPQ. CPQ is like the funnest shit ever. I often spend 2-3 days making characters just so I can make an awesome CPQ character. CPQ is the most fun part of maplestory period.

It's the closest thing you get to PvP, and plays as a team vs. team pro-fest where you launch waves of creeps at your opponents, and can buy all kinds of disables.

Omfg I think i'm gonna get back into Maplestory... If only you could CPQ after level 50... T_T

I haven't played in like 2 years now, but I remember so many times that heartbreaking feeling you got when you turned level 51 and you were like... "Now what?"

Damn, we should start a MapleStory TL guild.

I think that DFO is a good game.

dungeonfighter.nexon.net

It gets sort of grindy when you hit the top level and have nothing to do.

I enjoy maplestory after all the updates they made to get rid of the early grinding. I've never had the patience to go past the CPQ stuff, and even up to there it should take up a decent amount of your time especially if you never played it before.

Last time I played, I noticed a striking lack of interesting content between levels 51 and 70. Each time I hit 55ish, my friends and I just all created new characters.

If there has been an increase in content for this level range since the last time I played, I would be super excited to start anew.

WoW is the easiest MMO out there that isn't complete garbage. If you think WoW is too "grindy", don't play MMOs, you won't like any of them.

What is your focus? PvE or PvP?

I'd pretty much agree on Allods if you want a WoW clone with lots of PvP. You'll never get ggnore levels of equipment w/out plunking cash at the end-game though.

PvE... well, pretty much every grind-Korean type of MMO does that nicely in spades.

If you enjoy WoW style MMORPGS, I would suggest Runes of Magic. Runes of Magic probably the best WoW clone. Both PvP and PvE are decent. Right now it's still a very young game so there isn't that much content and a few bugs here and there, but it has potential in the future.

If you are looking for something largely community and team based, I would suggest Runescape. Runescape has highly developed communties and fanbases, and Runescape clans are the most serious clans out of any mmorpg on par with WoW. PvE is garbage, but PvP is really good. It's more team oriented rather than individual skill.

If you enjoy fast paced action/fighting games, I suggest Lunia. The only way I can describe Lunia is a fighting game with items and levels. There isn't any sort of ideal build in lunia because it's all about how you control your character. Your character grows stronger as you get better at the game, not as you gain levels and get better gear.

If you enjoy the typical MMO style PvP and couldn't care less about leveling and gear and such, you can try out Guild Wars. Guild Wars 2 is coming out soon and it looks promising.

Dragonica people.
it has instances, with loot based on your scores.

scores are counted by combos, the more combos you do, the better the exp multiplier goes. leveling is nothing in that game and its definitely a LOT of fun

Dragonica had me for a while

The game play is quite fun and ability to form party's really easily is nice

The interface of the game is probably one of its strongest point
You don't have to touch the mouse at all basically to play

But as with all MMORPGs, once you don't play it for like 2+weeks, you lose interest in it
(in my experience)

huh looks like THQ sold it

I got to level 106 in Maplestory, and I'd only recommend it if you have friends to play with. The game by itself is fun up to about level 30 if you are playing by yourself.

Nowadays leveling is way faster with:

1. Random Dungeon finder and cross realm instances. This makes it so you can run dungeons at any level and get good gear

2. Call to Arms BG weekends. You can literally gain 10 levels over a weekend playing BGs and nothing else if it is on CTA. Takes 2 BG win to gain an entire level roughly

3. Heirlooms: +20% xp

4. Patch 4.0.1 gives you a TON of awesome class specific stuff at lvl 10.
Disc priest: you get Penance at lvl 10
Shadow priest: you get Mindflay
Feral Druid: Mangle
Frost mage: water elemental
Prot Pally: avenger's shield
Demonology lock: Felguard
Arms warrior: Mortal Strike

All those come at lvl 10 plus a TON of passive bonuses specific to your class. Those are some of the best skills in teh game and it makes leveling WAY better.

Do some questing, do some dungeons, gain 10 levels in BGs on weekends, and your to lvl 80 very fast and it was fun rather than grinding quests for months
