I played this mission on brutal, and it really felt like playing on casual... Seriously, I lost like 5 units. Saved every single village.
I had Banshees, which were rather important. If you have those: Make a few more Vikings while clearing the first village. Start making a few Banshees. Generally you don't ever need much more than 10 Vikings and 5 Banshees, but you should get more and more of them anyways. After clearing the first village, fly to the bottom left and grab the bonus gas there. Repair if necessary. The next village should be to the bottom right of your base. You should have at least 1 Banshee by the time it's under attack. There are only Lings and Roaches on the ground so you will be able to clear them easily. Make 2-4 Bunkers and 1-2 Tanks in your base for defense. I only was attacked very lightly though. Later on you can just cloak and snipe those infestation things because usually there is no Overseer around. Keep that in mind if you are far from the base when it's under attack. Once you have enough Banshees to safely kill single spore crawlers (5 should do already, but 10 is better of course), you can start attacking Zerg bases. I suggest to start at the bottom, then the right and save the top base for the end (seems to be the one with the srongest defenses).

I built about 10-15 Vikings and about three Ghosts, actually the evil ghost ones. That was my intercepting army. Everytime a new village was infested I took my Vikings and killed the overseer, so my Ghost could nuke the village ("Thanks Raynor, for saving us by nuking our village" >). Then I built a lot of Marauders, Tanks and stuff to wipe out the Zerg bases with support of the Vikings. I recommend to wipe out the Northern base first so you can crab the minerals.

I beat this mission on Hard first try with only vikings and a small defense force. Got all the achievements as well... just prioritize saving the first base, then save ever base after that. Every time you save a base, fly back to repair.
I had tanks, marauders, medics, and vikings for this mission, and that's all I made.

just finished on brutal with house call achievement, 5 or more rax pumping pure marine medic with upgrades, had maybe 5-6 vikings the whole game. just a-move your marine medic ball around facerolling everything with stim, simples.

MM and Vikings , did it on brutal and got all achievements without any trouble, it was one of the easier missions.

I massed Diamond backs and vikings in my base while making two nuke silos + A few Ghost/Spectres. As soon as a settlement would be infected, I would nuke it before it went up and only once got a ghost to close to the infestation that I got spotted by an overseer.
TL:DR Mass in your base and nuke the new infestations. You are a genious I'm trying this!

It took me a while to figure out how to do it on Hard, but basically you have to keep pushing and keep killing stuff, don't slow down. Basically what I did was I would set my MM army outside a infesting place, run in Vikings, shoot a couple times, then run out. The mutas would follow the Vikings outside where the marines could kill them, then send in the Vikings to kill Broods.
The actual bases are pretty easy to kill with just MM, even on Hard, and they don't have any air units as I remember so you can drop down your vikings to provide support. Tanks are too slow for this mission if you don't have the really big transport (and even then you don't really need them for anything).
Having one of the big transports from zerg research really helps you respond to infestations quickly.

Vikings actually outrange the mothership, so just wait till its over a patch of forest (so it doesn't warp in units) and go nuts on it after you clear all the bases
|
Pretty sure the fall is the zerg mission. In this case simple two bunkers and four tanks to defend your base. Put a reactor and pump out vikings nonstop. Everytime a new village is getting infected take all your vikings and attack. Clear out the infestation and then go back to get repaired and attack the zerg bases. Extremely easy.
|
I didn't even need to use Vikings at all during Haven's Fall. Spectres + Nukes for preventing infestations and M&M for base wrecking made the mission a cakewalk.
|
Massing Vikings, with a bit of static defence is an easy way to win this. Get 20+ Vikings and nothing can stop you. Just make sure you take care of new colonys being infested first, and then the zerg bases going in the order North, East, South.

This mission and the counterpart are easily completed with a small Bio ball and straight Viking reactor pump with maybe the odd Science Vessal, even on Brutal. For some reason they made it so straightforward to just mass the new unit.

This was exactly my strat, was one of the easier Brutal missions for sure.
I didn't complete it on my first try because I was trying to be cutty, losing Vikings early, making other units, blah blah blah...
That was all a mistake.
Seriously.... 1) 2x reactor Starports 2) Mass as many vikings as physically possible 3) Roflstomp everything
I think at one point I had 60 vikings? Might have been 55 or 65, don't remember.
Just clear out the air, then hit assault mode and watch shit get mowed down. Doesn't even matter if it takes them forever to find spots to drop, you just eventually cover half of an entire zerg base (when killing hatcheries). Colony infestations are a joke, you won't lose a single unit.
I think one or two of the hatcheries I did lose significant vikings, but it didn't matter because that completes the mission, and I had 60+ anyway. The initial landing is when you'll lose forves, don't worry. Once they start clearing landing zones it's all downhill.

On July 29 2010 16:25 Meta wrote:I'll tell you how I beat it on brutal. The main problem with this mission is that if you play too passively you'll get overwhelmed. You need to start attacking the infested camps literally immediately. Take your first couple vikings and clear out the first camp, they should be able to do it by themselves. Start with the brood lords obviously. I forgot exactly what order the infestations happen in, but I ended up going north and expanding at the top location. The most important thing about this mission is that you have to hit new infestations the moment they pop up. Zerg units that attack your base either come from the north zerg base or the south zerg base. You'll need to expand to one of these locations, which means it's a good idea to push in that direction with your main army and bunker/siege up the other side of your base. What I did was mass vikings (obviously), and then transition into upgraded bio with siege support. Mercs help. I got siege breakers and one or two siege tanks to bolster them. After the first infested base is down, the second one that gets infested is to the south. Head there immediately with your vikings (should have like 5-7). Kite back the mutalisks one at a time and try to pick off brood lords while massing up marines/medics/marauders/firebats. Be wary, there's 1-3 hydralisks. After the brood lords are down, a-move your army into the infested base. I put a bunker and two tanks at the north entrance while doing this to defend attacks from the north base. At this point, I went to the newest infestation, which was to the north I believe. I bunkered up the south entrance, salvaged the north bunker, and pushed to the north. On the way to the 3rd infestation I killed the zerg base on the north side of the map and expanded there. Making it a planetary fortress should be enough defense, if you don't have it perdition turrets work fine. As I was taking out the 3rd base, the 4th infestation site started to spawn, so I went up there and took it out before anything was up. That site got infested again later, but I was able to clean it up with a handful of units and actually save that base After the 3rd/4th infestation bases were down, I had like 100-125 supply and was able to basically just a-move into all the other bases and win. I continued clockwise around the map. Occasionally your main will get attacked, make sure you have a couple units there. At worst you can just fly your vikings back to save it. The most important part is taking out the brood lords with your vikings first. After I got about 12 vikings I stopped producing them, opting instead for all bio since they were 2/2 (max upgrades for that mission I believe). Hope this helps.
I want to say I just did this mission and was incredibly passive.
I teched siege tanks, and built bunkers with warpigs constantly moving them further and further north until I took out the primary exp (This took a really long time as I was nearly mined out) I was max upgrades and had a lot of tanks. Expand and build more tanks and bunkers at the double choke. I didn't defend any colonies but I jsut wanted a victory on Brutal. just constantly building, salvaging, and moving tanks worked well.
I had a force of about 20 vikings and 5 spectres. The vikings were used to snipe overseers and the spectres were there to mop up/nuke.

you dont really need anything else other than vikings for either side of this mission.
cleansing mission, mass vikings. destroy purifier, mass vikings.
although with purifier on brutal, the purifier will warp in 4 carriers and a iirc 6 stalkers when you attack it, so be wary of that force.

On July 29 2010 13:41 Squanto wrote: same here. I've been completing all the missions easily on hard but this one I just can't seem to grasp. It's kinda hard to keep all the infestations down, and if one gets up too long your screwed.
edit: picked protoss side.
Oh man that side is a joke. Just mass vikings. 6 will get you through early, 15 will prevent any attempt to infest.
For the zerg bases just make a funball of whatever units are available, then throw your vikings into the mix after the initial push.
Zeasy.

What really helps with this mission on brutal initially is sending your Vikings to the southwest immediately and picking up the gas canisters, then sending them far east near the middle colony for additional two gas canisters. This will enable you to build a (tech)reactor on all three of your starting buildings, pump out a couple tanks and marines for D and a bunch of vikings for O, while your SCVs can focus on minerals.
You can clear the first infestation with your three vikings immediately after picking up the gas, and hopefully have a couple extra out in time to snipe the overlords en-route to the southwestern colony. Also SVs&+100 energy research make the whole map really trivial.

Brutal wasn't any harder than Hard regarding this mission.
All you need to defend your base is 1 bunker, 1 siege tank, 2 turrets. Mass vikings with reactor and take out fresh infestations by cleaning up the air and then landing outside the walls and a-move towards the center.
After you have a giant ball of vikings, all you need to tackle the high-ground zerg bases is 2 siege tanks with your vikings to slow-push in and land your vikings after a landing zone is cleared.
|
If you have Banshees from the Supernova mission, this is a cakewalk on Brutal. Especially with Tech Reactor for double Banshees. Just keep pumping them in even amounts and A-click on every base and you'll roll over the map.

I beat this on brutal like broodwar tvz: m&m/tank/vessel
and a few vikings to help with the air
