Hey folks,
So just a few weeks ago I finished up Mass Effect 1 and 2, and loved them both. However I find myself somewhat reluctant to replay through them as I really enjoyed my first playthrough, and I think that starting over with a new character or choices might tarnish the original. I got really attached to the characters, especially my character, and just generally loved the world and story. I'd hate to re-write that experience a second time.
So then I got into the SC2 beta which has been destroying my life with amazing efficiency. But, I'm still in the mood to play some more RPG games.
I was browsing the steam games library and came across a game called Spellforce. Apparently it's out, along with several expansions, and a sequel, and is nice and affordable. From what I've seen of the game info, it looks awesome. A good mix of RPG, RTS, fantasy settings, etc. However I can't seem to find any real fan reviews of it yet, so I'm not sure how accurate the advertising is.
Has anyone played Spellforce 1 or 2? I would love to hear about your experiences! I'm really leaning towards buying this game, but I'm just not quite sure if I should or not o.o;
-Is there any sort of follow-through between the games? Can I play the same general character(s) from the first game into the second?
-Does the game feel like it has some solid aspects of RPG and such? I'd like to be able to get attached to some of the characters and such.
-Is it tactically deep?
etc etc.
All comments and replies are much appreciated! Thanks!

You would be very unlucky to buy it now when it was 75% off this last week-end. I feel bad for you.

I *think* I played Spellforce 2 (don't remember which one) sometime a couple years back since my roommate had it on his hard drive. The campaign was very long and played much like an RPG. I actually don't think I finished it, considering how long it was. I remember the storyline was fairly enthralling and kept me at it for days, but the gameplay just became stale after a while.
Sorry for the vague description, I really don't remember much... I remember a strong earthquake spell, a cool haunted ancient city level, and I think there were some goat cavalry units too.

Hmmmm. Well, since the original + all expansion packs is just $15, I'm going to go ahead and buy it. If I like it, I'll try the sequel perhaps.

Not quite on the topic of Spellforce, but if you want to play an RPG, I can recommend Risen. I found out about its existence only last week, and already have far over 20 hours of play time It's very very similar to the Gothic games (from the same makers actually), which may be my favorite game series. I don't think the Gothic games are very well-known in the US, but seriously, check them out.

I shall have to check those out. Are all of the Gothic games good? It looks like there are 3 of them, yes? Ooo and a 4th coming soon. Very spiffy. Do you recommend playing all of them? Is there much continuity between them?
As for the Risen series, there's just the one, yes?
Thanks for the referral!

I was also wondering about Spellforce 2 as I too saw the special on Steam last weekend. Haven't played the first one though. I could recommend The Witcher and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines as really solid action RPG's though.
Edit: If you wanna go back further, play Fallout 1/2 which are much better than their modern successor. They're more of a turn based RPG rather than action though.

Spellforce was a pretty decent game, but I played it again when I saw the steam discount and remembered that... it's just a decent game. I uninstalled it pretty quickly. Still first time I played it, I put in a good amount of time to it. The voice acting is terrible though. The game plays like warcraft basically. It's really a hit or miss whether you like it or not. Reviews are pretty much the same, either you played it and forgot about it or you played it and hated it.
Gothic games are pretty good. They weren't the best but they were good for that style of game. They were also all released very buggy.
Risen just came out in NA so yeah there's just one. Haven't played that one yet... I was going to but every time I look at it, it just looks like a mediocre game. So I haven't acquired it yet due to that.
If you like games that are Story > Gameplay. The Witcher is really good. There's also a 2nd one coming out which I am so pumped up for. I can't wait >.>. It based off a series of short stories that were created about the main character. Really good game. I think in europe it had to cut of the nude pictures in the game lol. I liked the dialogue in the game a lot. Like some games would over use swear words maybe to try to be cool? Idk. With this game they were only used it natural situations.

Thanks for the referral! There are 3 Gothic games. Gothic 3 received a lot of criticism, but I liked them all. Risen is essentially more of the same under a different name. Which is fine by me, since I enjoy that kind of game. Gothic 1 came out in 2001, I don't know if you want to mess with ancient graphics, controls and possibly compatibility issues. The parts are only connected loosely, story-wise. You don't need to have played one part to understand the next, so no worries there. Risen is completely separate. I'd say start with Risen, it's the most modern game. If you like it, check out the rest, since they play the same.
