I can't love or even have fun with a game until I understand it. When I first played Dawn of War with my friends, I couldn't help but get a little angry when I didn't know why their armies just rolled over mine.
When I first got Left 4 Dead 2, I didn't know how I felt about it. I couldn't say I hated it. I couldn't say I was enjoying myself. There was no fun, but there wasn't any hassle in playing either.
Then there was this LAN event at a nearby place having a tournament for L4D2 versus mode (PC), and MW2 freeforall tournament and MW2 2v2 tournament (360 and ps3 respectively). So my friend and his friends and I made a team. He knew a guy on an actual l4d2 team who pretty much taught us how to play versus. How to coordinate attacks as infected, how to move at fast paces as survivors, etc etc.
So we went to the event. One of our teamates quit our team to play on a team with his girlfriend. After finding a 4th, we played them in the first round and annihilated them. The second round, time was getting tight, so the organizer told us to do only the first chapter of that campaign to decide the winner, on dead center.
This map has the gayest shit ever that you cant abuse easily as infected. You can essentially kill them all by pulling or charging them off a cliff and they die instantly. In situations like this, I always get scared, thinking "What if we miss the death charges and pulls or whatever, but they get them all?" Especially since that was the only round. Thankfully, they had no clue what they were doing. We killed them before they got to the cliff. We got all 4 of our dudes to the end.
In the finals, we again only played one chapter, this time on Dark carnival. We killed them all at the beginning, near the cars, as infected, then on our turn, we just bypassed the cars by going off the street. Beat them 500-39.
Of the 6 teams that entered, only 3 knew how to play (as in, played the game before). Our first round was the hardest since one of their teammates, having practiced with us, knew what he was really doing.
Our prize, I can't help but feel cheated. We got 4 Monster bandannas, a monster t-shirt, a monster hoodie, and a monster cap (the event was sponsored by Monster btw). We divided it up, and I left with the cap and a bandanna. The MW2 ffa tournament winner got a similar prize. The MW2 2v2 tournament winners got a lifetime supply of monster. My friend was especially outraged, having played mw2 before, said they were just "noobtube spamming scrubs". I haven't played the game before... so...
In reality I probably can't complain about the prizes because it was just one thrashing after another. We never let the survivors get to the end, and we always got at least one in the end every time. Wasn't even a challenge.
Ever since then, I enjoy myself whenever I play l4d2, now that I feel like I know what I'm doing instead of doing random shit.

L4D2 is way to random to be considered competition.
PS. They gave you bad prizes because I'm right.

Poker
you gotta work with what you get. Sometimes there are some bs moments, like if you dont get health kits and the other team does or something.

Actually its my first event like that, so I didn't really know what to expect.
I just know that some places give away like 500$ to counterstrike teams for winning. And seeing as how the mw2 2v2 team got a year's supply of monster, I thought we'd get more than 20$ worth of clothing between the 4 of us, especially since it cost 25$ to get in.

Sounds bad, I guess you should play actual competitive games in the future if you care about winning though.

Nothing at all like poker.
Poker has strict rules.
L4D2 has COMPLETELY random number of EVERYTHING for BOTH teams.
It's way too random, you can't even compare it to poker.
Poker with l4d2 rules would be like playing normally, except 15 aces spawn meanwhile a queen tackles your cards out of your hands.

right now in comp l4d2, there is no config yet that is widely accepted as the one to use. in l4d1 it took about 7 months before cevo config, then 2 months after that for frustians mod to come out and to be used on servers after l4d1 came out. cevo + Show Spoiler +* We try to disable all non-saferoom medkits, turn them into pills instead * Team swap order is ABABA, instead of highest score goes survivor first
- The full list of changes between this and vanilla gameplay: * Tanks guaranteed 100% to spawn on every level 1-5 * Witches spawn 0% on 1,5 and 75% (default) on 2,3,4 * Tanks will not suicide if they go to AI and it cannot find a path to the survivors * Tanks will spawn as late as 90% level completition (default behaviour), this means you might get them much later now (bad for BH4, but good for pretty much every other level where getting it around the middle is bad) * The team format is ABABA (meaning the team order of who goes survivor first is swapped every map, ignoring 'valve swap') * The config files unlocks some of the network rates for better ping * Turn all spawnable medkits into pills (except saferoom kits) * Disable tank suiciding if no AI path to survivors was used mostly in europe, and frusts + Show Spoiler + * Replace all Medkits with Pills - This will remove all medkits in the game, including safehouse, nm3 ambulance, and finale kits, and replace them with pills. * Add 4 kits in finale- This will make sure there are 4 medkits by the finale button. * Disable Autoshotguns and Rifles - Replaces Autoshotguns with Pump Shotguns, and Rifles with Uzis * Enable Autoshotguns and Rifles in Finales - Allows you to control how many AS/AR spawn in finales. * Stop Rushing/"Pre-Mollying" AI Tanks - The AI tank is frozen in place before a player gets control, And after 2 seconds of control, you will be extinguished and given full health. Giving you 2 seconds to run out of a pre-molly. * Adds pausing to L4D - Hate it when a player disconnects or otherwise the game is unexpectedly stopped mid game? Now if both teams agree, the game can be paused until they are ready to play again. This is as close I can get to stopping all activity during the pause, but it could be exploited still by a "convenient pause" so both teams must agree.
was used in the americas. l4d2 has only been out for 6 weeks, and the tournamants that have been held so far have only been vanilla settigns with a !readyup command. l4d1 was so easy for survivors that they were only using tier1 weapons in comp. play + Show Spoiler + uzi, pump shotty, pistols only. then on finales tier2 was allowed
right now in l4d2 everything is allowed, and there has been a push to make a config that works, and is balance and have it adapted by cevo, and valve for the competitive players/team in the tournys. right now, whoever hosts a tourny, you have to pracitce on their config. there is a config being tested and changed very frequently, and it is the front runner in what they want the game to be liked, at least in tournys and scrims. + Show Spoiler + so i guess what my point is.. is that this config will remove as much randomization as possible in l4d2. l4d2 wants to be as competative as possible, and it's still in the baby stages of that happening
for me, l4d and sc are so much fun to watch compared to every other game out there.

Those "balance" changes seem unnecessary because both teams play as both survivors and infected in a round.
