Unfortunately, (rarely) AIDS and (very commonly) hepatitis B are transmitted through any transfer of fluids, including spit-swappin'. Otherwise, most aren't transmitted orally, however herpes genitalis (HSV-2, what's commonly known as herpes) and other diseases that cause sores can and will be transmitted orally if the girl in question has, say, given oral sex to someone who has it, whether or not sores are visible at the time. In other words, if there is any kind of possibility a girl has an STD, don't do anything with her, from kissing on. Fortunately, unless you're picking up girls in brothels or in guys' locker rooms, you should be okay - just be careful, and use protection. AIDS cannot be transmitted through transfer of fluids. You might have meant HIV, but I hear that you would have to drink gallons of spit to get HIV, if there's no cuts or whatever in the mouth.

No, you transfer the common cold through the air, it is airborne. Std's cannot survive when exposed to air and must remain in a transfer fluid to infect another person. These are widely known facts, not my opinion.

So how is that different from saliva exchange by kissing, we the saliva is still exposed to air.

If the virus (or bacteria or w/e as the case may be) is exposed to air, it dies if it is an std, whereas airborne illnesses such as the common cold can survive when completely dry. As long as the std remains in saliva during transfer from person to person, it can infect the other person. This only works for some std's though, not all of them, don't know/remember which ones. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmission_(medicine)
