A long time ago on US West, I used to play in korean channels whispering and randomly playing against willing koreans. Every one out of about six or seven players would respond favorably, so I'd say I found a fair amount of games. This is a story about one time when I met a terran player I knew for a short period of time back when I played terran as well.
I was in tenth grade when I began beating players in one on one games. I still remember the exhilaration I felt being on the flip side of match outcomes. It was not long before I began learning about build orders and strategies. Next, I was taking my skill level to the test against the feared koreans, masters that took Starcraft not as a simple game, but a philosophy and way of life.
As I strived to follow these natives in their ways, I met a particular terran player. Having both agreed to a Terran vs Terran matchup, we engaged in a game on Namja Iyagi. I was the one who emerged victorious. Being a rather friendly fellow, we were able to enjoy a decent conversation, even with his limited english. Friends list mutually established, we would continue our TvT battles. However, like many korean players, my friend just kept getting better. Over a few weeks worth of time, I could only sit back and witness the skill gap widen between us. Eventually, I was no match for him. I couldn't take it; I was slightly better than this guy at first, but now he became this good.
I stopped playing BW for a while. When I came back, I noticed that my terran friend no longer showed up on that account. Weeks passed, months passed, but he still didn't show up. His account expired and I would never again have the chance to spar terran en terran with him...
The other day, I logged into US west to play a game or two. I entered random korean channels to see if anyone were willing to game. I found a match against a particular terran player who, unusually enough, asked for a TvT. I complied, even though I am now a protoss player. Even more unsual, he chose a cross shaped island map with mains at 12, 3, 6, and 9. It was clear he was better and I lost, but played a pretty fun game using an old 2 fac gol drop strategy. When the game ended, he said "Thank you.. I promise ^^." It was then I knew. Before I could respond, he left the game. In the channel, I tried to message him but he was no longer online. I couldn't help but smile after that. This is the story of a ghost. His record: 0-1-0.

oh, i thought you were going to write about when you first met me...disappointed!

I read this three times, trying to come up with words, but I still can't, except to say,
Thanks for the nice story. It's always nice reading about long-lasting friendships like that <3

I don't get it how did you know it was him?
|
We always played on namja iyagi. The map he chose was namja iyagi.
|
Also you don't usually request a TvT from a P player :x
|
cool story! were you on the same ID as you always used?
|
Yup, the same ID I've been using for years. It's pretty simple, so I guess he remembered it.
Also, I don't think he knows I switched to P, but he did ask to tvt on namja iyagi, which should've rang a bell already :/

so is he now an A+ or what?
nice story btw

Reminds me of a guy who I used to play with a lot a couple years ago on East. He was like in his mid 20's and I was in my teens. I really feel bad I never got his e-mail or something. We really enjoyed each others conversations.

Really cute story. I'm going to readapt it for my fiction writing class xD.

I don't get why he left before you talked at all. Also what was he thankful for? You agreeing to play TvT on Namja? And what does he promise??
