<3 old games. Second all of these, except I'm going to respectfully disagree about your description of BG1/2. Torment is hands down the best isometric RPG ever made (admittedly, it's more heavy on storytelling and character development, whereas BG1/2 are more well-rounded as far as gameplay goes). Well Torment has better dialogs and a way more original and interesting scenario. But imo Baldur is the king of 3d iso RPG because casual and hardcore gamers ( hi ScS2 / tactics mods ) will like it. The gameplay ( fights ) is 20x better than in Torment ( i got bored even in hard mode during the fights ).
So imo Baldur is the best all round 3d iso RPG. Best for the fights ( by far ), solid dialogs and scenario, GREAT length and totally kickass mods. Also it is easier to find ( like 15 bucks whereas you have to pay 80$+ for a secondhand CD of Torment or torrent it ).
Torment is well ... more like a book. But a damn awesome book

I do agree that Baldur's Gate is far more accessible to casual and hardcore gamers, whereas the real experience from Torment really comes out of an appreciation for the story.
ADoM, Incursion, and Dwarf Fortress are all better roguelikes than Dungeon Crawl IMO.

What makes them better?
Serious question here. I've not played them but I might look into them if I keep frustrating myself playing anything but imba Transmuters in Crawl.

Dwarf Fortress - I guess that it's hard to put this game as the same genre as the rest. But this game is just deep and complex beyond all belief. It's interface and graphics are a bit tough to deal with, but no more complex than any other roguelike; and if you get past that, it's basically one of the most epic city/fortress-building simulations ever made, simply for the detail and depth.
Incursion - Benefits from using a modified version of the D&D3.5 rule set. The way it handles skills and noncombat actions allows for a lot of character diversity and ways of going about things. The thing to note about this game is that compared to Nethack, ADoM, or Dungeon Crawl, this is HARD. Mindlessly hacking your way through the dungeon doesn't work, and you've got to use the full extent of your inventory (tools, consumables, whatever) right from the first dungeon level. Probably the one quip I have with it is that it's not really balanced (caster characters peter out toward the end of the game).
ADoM - I think this finds an interesting balance in a lot of ways. It HAS an overworld, but doesn't overdo it (like TOME does). It HAS non-combat skills and issues to deal with, but it doesn't make them necessary or tedious. The spell system is interesting, but not too complicated (you can figure out what spells do as you get them), and there are attention to random little things that are interesting, but not necessary to enjoying the game. Mountain climbing? Bridge building? Herbs growing by the rules of Conway's Game of Life?

CM i love you more and more every day. CRT > LCD any time.
19 inch LCD = either 1440x900 (~150 USD) OR 1920x1080 (~200 USD) 19 inch CRT = 1792x1344 (~$50) CRT = superior

Oh Mirror's Edge was so intense, I highly recomend it!
I also have to disagree that Baldurs is the best ISORPG, if you have not played Temple of Elemental Evil (with mandatory co8 patch) then do yourself a favor and pick it up. This game is all about the combat engine. Story is minimal, more of a dungeon crawl. Clearly Torment(!)/Baldurs beats it in the story catagory.
TOEE is turn based though, sorry OP
