So recently my standard monitor broke and now I'm using one of those old bulky ones until I get a new one.. it doesn't even fit on my desk properly so playing anything fast paced like StarCraft 1v1 is a chore..
Thus I'm asking the people of TL to recommend some fun games that are enjoyable in SP!
I can't really give a list of things I like/don't like except that I really hate turn-based stuff, and I get bored of high graphic FPS games like Bioshock etc instantly.
Atm I'm just playing Battlezone 2 (so good) and random SC ums :/

Braid, Crayon Physics Deluxe, Portal
haven't played it yet but I'm interested in And Yet It Moves

You should try world of goo if you haven't played that.

wait so you had an LCD monitor (Which is inferior for gaming) and switched to your old CRT and are complaining? wtf?
|
Um, what? Yeah ripping part of my sentence out of its context and replying to it is quite stupid, don't you think?
I've played World of Goo lol, I kinda forgot about it but it was pretty good :p

Bitching about LCD is soooo 2003.

Dx. ( FPS / Rpg / infiltration hybrid, really old GFX with the UT99 engine but the gameplay and scenario are still awesome ).
Baldur 1/2 ( king of 3d iso rpgs )
Torment. ( 3d iso rpg with the best dialogs and the weirdest scenario and universe ).
<3 old games.
edit: Dx = Deus EX 1 :p

|
Half-Life, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Guitar Hero
|
Civilization 4 is really good, even if it is turn-based.
Half Life 2 series are also great.
I know you said there are things about both these two games that you dislike, but trust me these games are amazing

But you gotta love ASCII.

If you haven't play plants vs zombies, that can easily eat hours of your life if you need it to.

No, you're wrong, LCD hate is justified, there are only a few decent ones out on the market now.
Low refresh rate = bad.
Some of the new lcd's go to 120 though, which is great. But expensive.

<3 old games. What's an 'iso rpg'? Isometric 3D ( it is like an avanced version of 2d GFX that makes the characters look better )

lol nvm just read your OP and you specifically said you don't like Bioshock! Hard for me to understand but ok. I generally am not a FPS person at all but I really love that game for some reason.

<3 old games. Second all of these, except I'm going to respectfully disagree about your description of BG1/2. Torment is hands down the best isometric RPG ever made (admittedly, it's more heavy on storytelling and character development, whereas BG1/2 are more well-rounded as far as gameplay goes).

To release stress, I played this ultimate micro map, the one where you choose a bunch of different units and just fight and stuff. I muta microed for about 20 minutes then just had huge huge pvz battles like mass archons vs ultra/ling for another 20 minutes. That was a good 42 minutes spent having some quality fun

Torment is hands down the best isometric RPG ever made (admittedly, it's more heavy on storytelling and character development, whereas BG1/2 are more well-rounded as far as gameplay goes). Well Torment has better dialogs and a way more original and interesting scenario. But imo Baldur is the king of 3d iso RPG because casual and hardcore gamers ( hi ScS2 / tactics mods ) will like it. The gameplay ( fights ) is 20x better than in Torment ( i got bored even in hard mode during the fights ).
So imo Baldur is the best all round 3d iso RPG. Best for the fights ( by far ), solid dialogs and scenario, GREAT length and totally kickass mods. Also it is easier to find ( like 15 bucks whereas you have to pay 80$+ for a secondhand CD of Torment or torrent it ).
Torment is well ... more like a book. But a damn awesome book

hitman series (there is nothing like assassinating people in different ways) Clive Barker's Undying (most underrated game ever) grim fandango, leisure suit larry, monkey island (they don't make these any more ) pharaoh, Caesar 3 (if you are into city building games) deus ex (some political stuff that makes you think...)
and others

I do agree that Baldur's Gate is far more accessible to casual and hardcore gamers, whereas the real experience from Torment really comes out of an appreciation for the story.
ADoM, Incursion, and Dwarf Fortress are all better roguelikes than Dungeon Crawl IMO.

wait.. how is he complaining about lcd?? he said it broke?? i'm really confused

morrowind, fallout tactics

ADoM, Incursion, and Dwarf Fortress are all better roguelikes than Dungeon Crawl IMO.
What makes them better?
Serious question here. I've not played them but I might look into them if I keep frustrating myself playing anything but imba Transmuters in Crawl.

Dwarf Fortress - I guess that it's hard to put this game as the same genre as the rest. But this game is just deep and complex beyond all belief. It's interface and graphics are a bit tough to deal with, but no more complex than any other roguelike; and if you get past that, it's basically one of the most epic city/fortress-building simulations ever made, simply for the detail and depth.
Incursion - Benefits from using a modified version of the D&D3.5 rule set. The way it handles skills and noncombat actions allows for a lot of character diversity and ways of going about things. The thing to note about this game is that compared to Nethack, ADoM, or Dungeon Crawl, this is HARD. Mindlessly hacking your way through the dungeon doesn't work, and you've got to use the full extent of your inventory (tools, consumables, whatever) right from the first dungeon level. Probably the one quip I have with it is that it's not really balanced (caster characters peter out toward the end of the game).
ADoM - I think this finds an interesting balance in a lot of ways. It HAS an overworld, but doesn't overdo it (like TOME does). It HAS non-combat skills and issues to deal with, but it doesn't make them necessary or tedious. The spell system is interesting, but not too complicated (you can figure out what spells do as you get them), and there are attention to random little things that are interesting, but not necessary to enjoying the game. Mountain climbing? Bridge building? Herbs growing by the rules of Conway's Game of Life?

CM i love you more and more every day. CRT > LCD any time.
19 inch LCD = either 1440x900 (~150 USD) OR 1920x1080 (~200 USD) 19 inch CRT = 1792x1344 (~$50) CRT = superior

Oh Mirror's Edge was so intense, I highly recomend it!
I also have to disagree that Baldurs is the best ISORPG, if you have not played Temple of Elemental Evil (with mandatory co8 patch) then do yourself a favor and pick it up. This game is all about the combat engine. Story is minimal, more of a dungeon crawl. Clearly Torment(!)/Baldurs beats it in the story catagory.
TOEE is turn based though, sorry OP

- Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3 are both preety good, although both are filled with their share of faults. - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has both an interesting and challenging singleplayer. - Hearts of Iron II is one of few (good) grand strategy games available. It`s suprisingly simple to learn, but you will literally spend hours playing it just micromanaging every little aspect of running a country during a time of war. - If you have ever enjoyed war games, The Operational Art of War III is about as modern as you can get in that aspect. - The Half-Life series of games are equally as legendary as any of the Blizzard franchises and coming from one of the few developers that are similar to Blizzard. - From adventure games, the Monkey Island series (particularly Curse of Monkey Island) are a must play. - If you can handle poetic talk, both Max Payne`s are worthwhile to play.
That is all I can think of right now. I will mention if I remember anything else.
