Holy crap I remember watching this last year with my Korean roommate, and he explained to me what was going on (no subs lol). It was okay, but I liked it better since we played the game too.
That game is damn fun. We'd play it everyday at lunch.

How poker oriented is this movie? I know it is based on it, but is the gameplay focused on, or just more drama/personal reaction, etc.

Some gameplay is focused on, but it's more drama and stuff. It's not the poker Texas Hold'em if you're thinking it is that, btw. Definitely a cool movie.
