So I recently got a beta key to Heroes of Newerth. (You know, that game which is an exact copy of DOTA with a few new heroes, shinier graphics and items renamed and made by the creators of Savage and Savage 2?) I just thought that I might write up about my experience so far.(remember, this is still Beta, things can change)
Graphics: Their kinda like SC2's. It looks like a DOTA if it was made using SC2 instead of WC3, it's colorful and has nice lighting. It's not on par with demigod but its still fairly decent looking. Graphics: 7/10, They're nice but not amazing
Gameplay: I will go over 2 sections in this Heroes/Balance and Items The Heroes are exactly the same as dota with a few heroes buffed a bit, few new heroes and axe buffed like crazy. His whirlwind move now allows him to use his auto attack while using the whirlwind making it a lot more effective late game. Any balance issues in DOTA are in HoN too. While we are talking about heroes, we should talk about roshan. He is no longer named Roshan and he is no longer a rock golem. He is now a huge Gorilla who can't seems to remember the name of right now. Anyways, he is a lot more powerful than Roshan too.
The items are EXACTLY the same just with different names and making item recipes is a lot easier. All you have to do is click on the recipe and a bar will show you what you need for it and you can buy the items from their. You can also look at all the shops items from each shop and you can buy them, they will just not go into your inventory but into the cache(like circle of power in DOTA but its at the shop by fountain). Game play: 7/10, It's good but it's the same as DOTA
Creativity/Innovation LOL ITS EXACTLY THE SAME AS DOTA 0/10
Sound: Some characters in the game have the exact same sound bytes as they are in DOTA, while others are different. They are all bad but since they are not needed it is of little consequence. 2/10, it's bad, really bad
Overall: Overall, HoN is like a shinier DOTA. If you are a DOTA fan you will love this game. If it ends up costing money though, it won't be worth it but if it is free it will definitely be something to get. Overall: 5/10 Shinier DOTA with 3 or 4 new heroes.
So this is my take on it so far. Since it is still in Beta, much could change and will probably change. I might update my review accordingly, but I might not. All we can do now is hope that it is free because I am not gonna pay anything for a shinier DOTA.
(Yes, IceFrog did say that they could make HoN)
I also have a question for you all, have you played HoN?
Poll: Have you played HoN (Vote): Yes (Vote): No
Poll: If so, what do you think of it? (Vote): Amazing (Vote): Great (Vote): Good (Vote): average (Vote): Kinda meh (Vote): bad (Vote): poor (Vote): Shit

It has a lot of nice features and pretty nice graphics. I would enjoy it, but after playing so much dota in the last few years I have become sick of the genre. I hope its successful though. I think S2 games has a lot of potential and it's a shame that their savage games never became popular at all. Unlike HoN, Savage is a very innovative game.

Icefrog gave them full rights. It is right in their terms of acceptance (I can't post that here, lawl NDA) His team is working on LoL (League of Legends) on their own afaik.
I love Hon. 1. Their online system is very sleek, yet still has a lot of options as far as game modes and stats go. Game creation, all replays saved to a central server, these guys really really know their net code. 2. The new heroes are really well done (except for one which seems to be a copy of naix with stealth/windwalk 3. It is a tad faster then DoTA which can be hit or miss for some people. 4. Voice over IP which makes some pubs more bareable.
It won't be free, It'll probably cost about the same as Savage 2. People buy WC3 just to play DoTA now a days so I'm not really sure it is that big of a turn off. To some people this is a Demigod that doesn't suck.
I love Savage 2. I don't play it religiously, but I'll turn it on every once in awhile. From previous experience with S2 I can say that, while they won't drift from the DoTA, the team has the ability to throw some curve balls vis a vi with special maps. Anyone who is going to bash it for being a DotA clone should realize that. It is far too early to tell exactly what they will do with HoN. The Maps might change styles for new types of game play.

I just played some HoN, and I barely played DotA before (I did, but not alot).
I must say that the graphics are very, very good ands enjoyable, the game itself seems pretty optimized and runs well. One thing I really, really, REALLY loved is that your input commands are instant (well, in the 1 game I've played so far). It's night and day compared to the built-in 250ms from Bnet. Your hero moves the very instant your ordered him to, and that only for me makes it a ton more enjoyable than Dota.
One thing I have to say though, is that the UI in general is horrible. Everything seems to be placed randomly. Alot of icons are WAY to small and I can barely identify them. One example is the shop UI. The UI itself is at the left side. Your over your mouse on the items icons to see the name, placed below the UI. However, the stats themselves are, for some reason, placed at the very bottom right corner of the screen. It is very annoying to have to move your eyes back and forth between the icons and the stats. Same thing for when you target something else than your hero. The box information of the target is placed at the rightmost side of the screen, so it's hard to quickly check the enemy hero's HP and judge if your spell will have enough damage to kill him. Also, the navigation of the shop UI is very confusing. For some reasons all the shops shows all the items in the game, but you still have to be at the correct shop. Alot of times I tried to buy an item only to realized I was at the wrong shop. It should show only the items available in the shop itself, IMO.

I played it a little. I don't like dota and I only know the basics but this is identical. The engine runs well though so if sc2 looks and runs like this I will be happy.
There's no tutorial or anything, they didn't try to add anything special to it except all sorts of stats that good players will scrutinize over and use to stack teams accordingly (they do this already)
They didn't try to really address many issues, except you can rejoin when you disconnected, but it's so hard to get out of a game if you dont want to play, you are stuck there for the 45 minutes to an hour because its impossible to get people to concede.
But the potential to troll people is still there, it's the same awful community.
I don't know why people are going to buy a game completely identical to the one they already have but we will see I suppose.

same thing could be said about cs:source, I don't see anyone complaining about that.

So has anyone tried League of Legends AND HoN? I played LoL all weekend and its cool, but the graphics and everything is just so choppy, maybe HoN will be better for me (i like smoothness)
Unforunately the beta keys are closed.. if anyone is done with theirs and wouldnt mind letting me try, id be very grateful.

The best part about HoN is that there is absolutely no delay when you send commands. I've no idea how they've done that, but so far i haven't noticed any odd hits/misses with spells that you might expect with that.
Not sure I like all the stats things though, sort of ruins the pickup/public games even more since everyone picks carry heroes.

The reconnect option is my favorite part of the game. It actually was relevant in a game where my computer locked up. The 5 minute window was more than enough for me to restart my computer and get back into the game where I left off.
