But I assure you, it is more difficult than Japanese because Korean has more letters (actually, if you count both Japanese's writing systems, Hiragana and Katagana, then I think Japanese has more letters) which are mostly different. Also, each word is made up from 2 ~ 6 letters, so it's very hard to learn. Chinese sucks though, the words are so damn difficult to remember. Haha.. Japanese uses over 2000 kanji (chinese characters), each of which may have 2 or more different readings.. Korean may be tough but it's the writing system that gives it a big leg up for learning compared to Japanese or Chinese. There was a blog called Korean Vs Japanese that touched on a lot of this, that's the place to look.

To counter-argue that, Korean has Han-ja, albeit less often used.

ed: not sure if chinese is really 'harder' than korean. Tones and bajillion characters are probably the worst of it but otherwise I don't think it's bad?

And yeah, Chinese is damn freaking hard because the words aren't formed by 'letters' such as English, Korean or Japanese. And it has those 4 tones, as well as 'traditional Chinese' and 'New-age Chinese' writing systems. Urgh.

I'm thinking of doing East Asian Languages/Culture/Studies/whatever for university and my preference is to focus on either Japanese or Korean (chinese is too hard).

But on a more serious note, I would choose Japanese for various reasons.
