One day while browsing the forum, they made a thread about the announcement of sc2. I've never heard of such a game and I didn't know why everyone was so excited. I checked out the linked and it seemed pretty cool. So I decided to buy the first one since the reviews for it were amazing.
When I began those first terran missions, I was amazed and dumbfounded on how great the game was. After feeling confident about beating the first sc, I decided to go on b.net. This was a day I will never forget. I was nervous, nervous because if people still play this game, they should be good.
So I joined a game and I'm pretty sure the person was korean. So I picked protoss and with my 10 apm, I begain building gateways. I had no idea of strategy and I played just how I played against a computer. I got owned really badly. I was confused because the player built two gateways and I was climbing the tech ladder really quickly. At that time, I didn't know my opponent opted for a two gate.
I left the game confused but excited. Playing against other people is way better. Which is why I wanted to get better.
(Note:I still didn't come across tl.net until my third week I believe.) So I went to the starcraft compendium and started reading. I also searched for guides and checked on the blizzard forums. One way or another I came across tl.net.
It's unfortunate I don't remember that day,but I do remember asking myself why they have horses and why the community's name was teamliquid.net.Anyway, there was this news title about the semi finals coming up. Semi-finals of what? Yes, it was the semifinals between savior and mind in the GOMTV MSL 3. I was breathless because when I began watching them play, they were way better than that kid I played on b.net. They were amazing and there was action everywhere.
I wanted to play well myself and one way or another I began to find out about protoss builds. I read on the recommended strategy threads. So I opted for two gate and just two gate for a month on b.net. What really changed how I played sc was when I found about iccup. For some reason, I was scared because I found out that good people played there.
I began downloading replays, watching vods, searching the site, looking at my own replays. The first season that I played on iccup, I was still a D-. I was still motivated and was having so much fun. I told my friends and my brother. It's too bad most of my friends play WOW and only frown upon sc. Whatever, I still loved the game and played everyday on iccup for a month and a week and reached D.
At this point, I was confused about whether or not I was improving. I was but I didn't realize at that time. My friend always teased me that I would never reach D+. I was mad that I couldn't reach D+. So I quit and I wanted to forget about sc completely. I didn't browse tl.net for a few months.I had lost that feeling of motivation and excitement. There were days where I watch vods and replays, play sc and do it for hours upon hours.
Let's face it, starcraft is unlike any other game. I came back, much to my surprise, I won quite a few games in my first pvp in a few months. Now I want to play sc again but it's alot harder. Last year, the work at school was easier but I think I could have fun with the limited time I have.
So share your first few months of sc if you want.
