Starcraft is a computer game designed and released by Blizzard in 1998 that can be best described as chess with an injection of adrenaline. The graphics are elementary compared to the 3D animations of modern games but that fact can be overlooked due to the game's smooth game play and intricate strategies. It's been 9 years and the game is still popular in European and Asian countries, particuluarly South Korea. The game is one of my hobbies but it isn't the game alone that makes it unique to me. It is unique to me because it is a game that has brought together and provided entertainment to millions over the years in the country I am from, South Korea. Upon visiting my native country in 2002 I was immediately hooked on the game. Currently there are two television channels dedicated to computer gaming in South Korea that mainly focus on Starcraft. They cover matches just as ESPN would cover a football game with announcers screaming play-by-plays, pre, and post game analysis. There are over 400 professional Starcraft players mostly aged from teenagers to young adults that spend the majority of their days training much like an olympian trains day in and day out for their one opportunity, because sometimes thats all they get. Professional Starcraft players can earn even up to a staggering 300,000$ a year which isn't too shabby for playing a computer game. A website I frequent called TeamLiquid.net is a community website for Starcraft where people from all over the world come together to view and discuss professional matches and the professional players themselves. The website has not only provided plenty of entertainment for me but it has also helped me to learn many different things about people's cultures and ideas by playing Starcraft and conversing with them. Not only do I love playing the game as it is the most amazing game ever, but the fact that I can enjoy the game along side other passionate fans from all over the world is really icing on the cake. | ||
