I did enjoy the battle system more then I do for most jrpgs. What I didn't like were the characters and the tone. Actually the main guy and his dog were alright but a couple of the companions really annoyed me. Also there was a part where the party was stopped by soldiers who said "there's a warrant for your arrest" or something but instead of having to fight our way the kiddy characters got into some silly antics and we all ran off into the woods.
What I am wondering is: are there other non-childish characters that I can swap out for the annoying ones and also does the tone of the game continue to be light hearted and silly or does it get a little more serious at some point? The thing I like about ToS is how simple it is. The combat is simple. The story is so cutesy and so are the characters. That's why I liked it. It was just simple fun to play. There were some dark moments in ToS, but overall the tone stayed light hearted and young. I assume this would apply across ToV but Zil can probably tell you that better.
ToV, for the most part is fairly light-hearted, and very comedic. Battles are quite as refined as ToS or ToA. But there are new elements that make it exciting. The battles are overall slower paced the AI is still as dumb as ever, but what ToS lacked in the battles ToV and ToA made up for.

I LOVED ToS, but I feel those videos do far injustice to the level of awesomeness of the battle system.
Tales of Symphonia is by far my favorite RPG ever. It's like... perfect. While one can make an argument that ToS is great for its simplicity as Chill said, I for one marvel at how complex and in depth it is. The storyline and clashes of ideals in the game were riveting. I love how emotional the game was, in various aspects of it. Seriously, no other game has made me laugh and tear up as much as Tales of Symphonia has.
I cannot wait for ToS2. Meanwhile, I'll be playing TotA once I get my friend's PS2.

<33333333 ToS, and I'm glad I own a Wii because I am going to get the sequel on the release date. ToS = My fav game of all time, even beating the much loved SC... well maybe not but fav non-PC console game of all time.

It's possible I'm just not that into jrpgs anymore. It used to be my favorite genre and I was able to look past the kiddy antics. Now it is just hard for me to avoid being annoyed by the childish characters. Maybe it is because everything is fully voiced now. It's not like I'm trying to say that I only like games with grit, gore, or complex plots, I just don't like obnoxious characters. I hated Gears of War because I thought the characters were obnoxious for being too far in the opposite direction.
Actually, I'd probably be fine with the game as long as you have a choice of what characters to bring along with you so I can ditch the annoying ones. I've certainly done that in past games (Star Ocean 3 for example).
Edit: I'm not trying to put the game down at all. I was just trying to decide whether to give it a shot.

I Loooooved ToS, and you all have talked about it to death, but theres one thing i dont get ... .... ..... Tales of Destiny anyone? Original playstation game, and killer game for its time, and one of the first if not first in the series i believe.
Game had a huge storyline, amazing characters, side stories, lots of character interaction, and overall badassery for original playstation game.

ToS was awesome. I am seriously considering getting a wii just for the sequel. Tales of the Abyss was also pretty good. Hell, the whole Tales series is awesome. Equal to the FF series IMO

I hate voice acting in RPGs
I mean if you had metal gear caliber voice actors, fine, but most dont and it just annoying.
if wakka wasnt so fucking awesome, the voice acting in FFX would ruin the game.
guess Im just old school and prefer scrolling text, but I hate, hate, hate voice acting

Wow
barely 9 hours into the game and somehow I find this in my inventory
Anyone who has played ToP should know how absolutely insane this is
For the DII players, this is equivalent to finding an elite unique in Act 1 normal
and no cheats of any sort used
not sure If I can bring myself to sell a couple
WOW
