I guess there's some "world cup" theming for EWC, but is there actually some higher-up at ESL/EWC who's gonna look at SC2 and say "hey why don't we have more players from Latin America" or something like that? Why not just try and get the best players in? Yeah I don’t really get that aspect of it. Especially as it somewhat overlaps with Katowice’s way of doing things in recent times. I quite liked when there were two WCs with pretty distinct identities, now you’ve got 2 where they’re kinda blurred a bit, indeed it’s almost as if Kato is a feeder tourney for this. Also very much reflected in the casting where we seemingly needed reminded about EWC seeds as much as who was advancing in such a prestige tournament. Blizzcon was more about Johnny Foreigner getting a shot at Korea’s best, with something of a trade off in gating out the field a little, and latterly the culmination of a whole circuit season. Where Kato was the crème de la crème mostly, hot players with direct qualifiers and an open bracket. Then WESG did a sorta semi-WCG thing for a bit, which actually coulda been great with a few tweaks/the passage of time where foreigners had a few more heavy hitters

That is one of the reasons why I, being in the minority there I know, count the "End-of-the-year"-World Championship as something higher than Katowice. But back in the day it might have different vibes, because Katowice basically always "opened" the circuit for the year, now it was kinda in the middle of it...and usually there were roughly nine months between Katowice and BlizzCon, so it would have always seemed a bit far away to talk about BlizzCon already. But between Kato and EWC there are only ~five months, so it feels much closer I guess? And in the end, Kato and EWC still have very different flairs. Katowice is basically the "King of the Weekenders", in terms of being "easy" to get into. This year for example, atleast that was the plan, only eight of the 24 slots would have come through invites, the rest was qualifier-based. Eventually we even get 19 qualification-slots from 24. And they were Open Qualifiers, too. Sure, on different servers, but you could try as often as you wanted to get into Katowice. EWC on the other hand will finish of a year and a half long circuit, so of course it tries to put emphasize on that. Lots of invites awarded throughout the circuit (good thing btw that Serral qualified again for EWC...it felt somewhat awkward that he would have gotten an inivte for a tournament he won over a year before the tournament), regional EPT points giving out some more slots, regionally locked qualifiers...and I will assume that if more than 16 players sign up for the qualifier, the ones with more points will get into it.

The closed qualifier will be a bit interesting, but I think Ragnarok and Showtime will make it through. Bunny might just destroy everyone and make it as well.
