Humanity has reached the edges of the asteroid belt. Warring nations fight for control over its’ caches of ion and ore. But supplies are limited and each reinforcement must put to careful use.
In this turn based 18-card strategy game, players build their space station and fleet from dual-purpose supply cards. Each card is a choice deployed as either an upgrade to their station or a ship in their fleet.
Outpost 18 plays in 10-15 minutes and is designed to scratch the dueling/head-to-head strategy game itch.
the idea
So I’ve been working on a larger deck building game for a while now — and sorry to those who are waiting to printed versions / test versions, they are in the works — but this project came in to shape pretty quickly. The challenge was to make a tight / snappy feeling strategy game with only 18 cards.
I wanted something that had hints of strategy / tcg themes — like aggression, card advantage, board manipulation, control, hand management, and so on. I wanted to make something that doesn’t require mental upkeep or board fiddliness — so there’s no tokens, no resource spending/tracking, etc. Instead, cards operate on a threshold system that keeps information on the board all the time.
In general:
Ore-based builds will generate a lot of offensive punch. Labour-based builds will generate card advantage. Ion-based builds will generate board control.

I’ve also got it available as a print-on-demand at-cost, if you wanna try it without having to cut anything or if you dig a retail-like package. I’ll add a link later.
It’s been playtested a bunch with my local circle, but I wanna keep tweaking it for a while and then release it as complete. It’s one of those things about any creative project — there’s only real value to it if its out there and in the wild. I figure a small game like this is a great way to get started.

I'm looking out for the print on demand.

The graphic style reminds me of risk of rain and FTL. Did you draw inspiration from them or how'd you come up with it?

I like working with pixel art because its just way easier to manage as a one-man thing. I have done a handful of digital games in different tools and I always use 8-bit or 16-bit pixel art, so it just kind of seemed natural.
My favourite game as a kid was final fantasy mystic quest (yeah sure have at me mates). The art style of that game was very black-and-white simple with big borders and clear lines, so that influences quite a bit.
I think it works nicely for a sci-fi game, too.

Does it make a difference to you to bypass the Kickstarter by "ordering" here? I have a revolut bank account so I could send money to a UK bank account no problem. If not or its too minor to bother I'll just go for the Kickstarter.

Nah doesn’t matter — the more people the merrier, I’m doing this for publicity, anyway!

Will go the kickstarter route

Been crazy so far.

I have, I have (-:
The order is for friends of mine living in Sweden. I assume that after the project is successfully backed, we'll get the chance to enter an adress? (sorry if that's somewhere on the kickstarter page)

Yeah, there’s a post campaign survey to gather shipping info and that kind of thing

Aww yeah, super excited to have the game in my hands this Christmas to try it out! My friend, whom I will have it send to, will probably crush me by then.
Though thanks to the online variant I can also play.
Great project and I hope you'll break even on costs! (Excluding your labor unfortunately)

woohoo! Yeah, we should be good re: costs, so not to worry there.
Fingers crossed December delivery lines up. It's looking good, so far.

The idea of navigating the asteroid belt while warring nations fight for control over valuable resources is both intriguing and intense. I can imagine the excitement of strategizing and making careful choices with each supply card, deciding whether to use it to upgrade my station or bolster my fleet. As someone who enjoys quick, strategic games, Outpost 18 seems like the perfect fit. The fact that it's designed to scratch that dueling/head-to-head strategy game itch in just 10-15 minutes is fantastic. While solitaire online is my trusty companion for passing the time, I'm definitely eager to give Outpost 18 a try for a change of pace and immerse myself in the thrilling world of space exploration and warfare.
