Sometimes I really long for void, to erase the great shame and disgrace I've made of my life. Other times I think there are memories I want to hold on to for all time. People I've loved whose kindness, humor, uniqueness I wish I could preserve so that they never die.

I very much wish it's the second option and I after I die would get the chance to speak with them and Einstein, Newton, Darwin and pretty much every interesting person in history. But so far there's nothing, not even one confirming experiment, not even a hint, to suggest that's the case and souls actually exist and are transferred somewhere after the body dies. After all, biological molecules do not need a soul, a vital force or a creator to make them alive, they just do it in the right conditions. Living creatures are a crafty mix of physics and chemistry, made possible by laws of quantum mechanics which govern how atoms come together to form molecules. And as such, I'm inclined to think they just perish when the conditions are unbearable. | ||

Either death is like sleep that we don't awaken from (and it's a most welcome repose, free from trouble and worry) or it's a transition for the mind (even better than the other option). Marcus Cicero was repeating this in his Tusculan disputations. Maybe not speak to them personally but at least get to listen. I've been meaning to reread the Phaedo, Plato always has plausible sounding explanations for these difficult questions. It's too bad I can't remember much of what I read. Thanks for reminding me of his arguments on this subject. I guess it's true that with zero evidence despite much seeking, it's most reasonable to conclude that there isn't a soul animating life. Seems like wishful thinking to want a soul to exist, but on the other hand there's so much of the universe we have yet to explore and understand. I'd like to think finding life on another planet some day would shed more light on the nature of what life is - if there's more to it than what we have observed on our tiny planet.
