After living 22 years in this world, I've decided I have absolutely no common ground with most people, and most people have no common ground with most other people, and that the best thing to do is to just let people act how they want to act and only interfere if it negatively affects me. But sometimes something happens that's so baffling to me that it penetrates this shield of tolerance and rattles me to my core such that I lose all solid ground.
I'll try to describe the sequence of events objectively without my explanations or perspective.
B0neThuGz is playing iCCup. He elects to play C+ vs C on the C's choice of map. The other player wants to know where B0neThuGz is from and his aka but B0neThuGz just wants to play. The other player deduces that B0neThuGz is NonY. B0neThuGz loses and goes afk. He comes back and re-enters Ladder C. The other player initiates conversation again, not to play more, but to talk shit and complain that NonY wasted his time by going afk. NonY gets upset in turn and this multiplies the other guy's insults. He has decided that NonY is only upset because he just lost, not because he just talked shit to NonY.
Ok now from my perspective, here's what I'm doing. I'm smurfing because I just want to play. All the meta-game bullshit sickens me and for a community full of people that claim to love BW so much, it's fucking ridiculous to me how they let drama supercede actual gaming and taint the entire experience. So I'm already thinking "ughhh" when I got an opponent that wants to play detective and can't stand JUST PLAYING BW but rather has to attach all this other shit, and to throw-away iccup games at that. And then there's the fact that I'm just playing casually. Any rank, any race, their choice of map, play even if it lags, do whatever I feel like in the game, etc. As long as I'm playing the great game of BW, it's fine.
So I'm playing the game and I have people in real life I'm talking to while I'm playing, and in the middle of the game, I'm compelled to leave. I don't leave then, but at the final battle I attack-move all my stuff and go afk. I come back like 1-2 mins later and I'm nearly eliminated and I leave.
Back in the channel I'm looking for another game when my opponent whispers me and talks shit. What?!?! And worse yet, it's about NonY. And by that I mean he wouldn't have such shit to say if he never heard of NonY before. But it's the very fact that he went detective on me that enables this post-game negativity. Do these people read tabloids and celebrity gossip? They probably claim to hate that shit and yet in their BW community they do their own form of it. What the hell is so great and compelling that it's more interesting than playing another game of BW? I really really can't understand it. Why do these people log on? And the fact that he concludes that I'm mad because I lost and not because he just spewed a bunch of shit in my direction totally blows my mind.
Let me try some interpretations here...
He's upset that I went afk during the game and wasted his time, but he's upset to such an extreme that he's become irrational and he chooses to waste more time with talking shit.
He doesn't care that I wasted his time. The moment when he can be dramatic outside of the game itself is his favorite part of BW, and now he's soaking it all in under false pretenses.
He only gets upset when people waste his time but he has no problem wasting his own time, even (perhaps especially) when it's doing or saying something negative.
I really don't know what it is.
And then the next stage is that he says that I take the game too seriously and that it's just a game. This COMPLETELY confuses me. Here's what I think:
If he's playing it as "just a game", then he should leave at the point when he knows the game is over so that he can start the next one. (I've done this many times myself on iCCup). Iccup points and rank / record / reputation don't matter. Obsessing over that shit is the definition of "taking it too seriously"
If it's just a game, then why must he know my identity and location? The game is the same.
If it's just a game, why has he initiated and persisted in conversation twice? Especially after the end of the game. The game is over, so if it was just a game to him, like it is to me, then there'd be no reason to talk about it. I want to say nothing and I have nothing to say to him. He has to say shit beyond the game, so he's the one for which it's not just a game.
If it's just a game, then why is he so fucking angry that I go afk? It's not like this is a fucking business meeting here where everyone is earning their $200k salaries. I'm a kid on my comp wasting time playing a video game and so is he. One of us going afk for 1-2 mins = EXPLOSION OF ANGER!?!? Perspective...
If I was in his situation, I would have never said a word during the game nor after the game. I might have even left when I knew that I had won and I felt there was no "real playing" left to do. I'd play a person who afk'd on me again and never have a single problem. To me, that's treating it like "just a game".
The only way I ever break out of that routine is when someone else initiates it and I feel like doing something other than gaming. I sure as hell don't ever get angry at an opponent just for beating me, especially in a situation like this where I'm attaching the least amount of importance possible to the game.
So am I really weird or is he? Are both of our attitudes tolerable or do we do things you would not put up with? Am I insane?

Talking shit after beating someone that didnt say a word to them is obviously an issue contained to the person that spoke shit unprovoked. Had you said something or w/e then perhaps there would be room for debate on cause and reaction. But here you just ran into a person who happens to get his pleasure out of out of game crap that evidently isn't your bag. That's fine.
You have to realize you are overly concerned with "pure game" experience. Not many people smurf as purely as you do just to play. Or have the patience to grind out 50 games to hammer down a perfect timing for a specific bo for a specific map. Personally I will never understand it. My game is completely on feel and as such, not nearly as successful or competetive but it's what I do to have fun. To each their own!
You need to do a better job of ignoring people. YOu are a high profile player. People know you smurf so they will put 1 and 2 together so as to find the famous player. Especially if they beat them, regardless of the circumstances. Don't let this stuff get to your head. If you truly are about the smurfing mentality then you should have done the easiest thing here. Not say a word and just move on or log on to one of your other 5 id's.

You had a bad day? there is always going to be crazy people out there, do as you said and don't take it too seriously. Next time just squelch and ignore

Nice post. /dnd or ignore that son of a bitch. You're right he's a newb and flaming just to show that he beat NonY. Let him be happy and don't give him the time of day and go own some other newb.

I think you're fine. Gotta realise there's just a lot of people like that, especially in the nerdy SC community. Some people forget that they're sitting at a computer trying to amuse themselves, and start thinking everything needs to get dramatic.

You ain't crazy nony, would piss me off in the same position.

I don't know. I ask where they are from pretty often. Not because I want to "find the known gamer" or anything. Just, for some reason, I find it interesting that I am playing with someone on the other side of the world.
As far as your situation NonY, I don't think you acted out of the ordinary at all. Like others said, /ignore the loser and move on.

Ignore or change smurfs.
Apparently you're on a ladder to play and get better. Another words, just grinding. So just play the game and avoid talking to people outside your f list.
For someone who's typically calm and collected (and occasionally erratic), I'm surprised this bothers you so.

Me too! It also sort-of helps me decide on a playstyle; if they're from China, I'm not opening mutas because the lag will destroy me.

thats why i /dnd when i log on. if theyre gonna whisper me, i dont wanna hear it. if i talk shit back to them, i dont wanna hear their responses either

Nah I don't use it to determine my playstyle. It's just fun for me to know. o.o

why dont you just ignore these guys? theres a lot of kids in the bw community, so you should know how to deal with it... just dont let any trash talk to affect you

The only thing I don't agree with is that I cannot stand playing when it's laggy (and you said you're fine with lag). Seriously, that shit fucking annoys me.
You did nothing wrong. It just so happens that you ran into a nerd who watches soap operas all day.

Welcome to the internet.

Cut the over-analysis and emo bullshit. Is this your first time ever being insulted? Going afk in a game is asking for it.

Your both weird! I think it was your fault though for going afk during the game. You said that he could have just left, but the idea of a ladder (maybe not to everyone) is to get higher so you can play better people and basically test yourself to see how high you can get. It will definatly piss people off if you go afk then expect them to take a loss after ~20 minutes of playing their hardest. Its not just a loss its one step further away from a higher rank while instead they should be one step closer.

Would you have really done this? I can draw a parallel between doing this and squelching him when he started BMing you, yet you never squelched him and instead wasted even more time writing a blog post about it. He was in the right. He had a reason to be angry, you didnt. You should have just ignored him dude, instead you wasted even more time.
