So, I finally figured out what's going on with my DSL: Verizon did it. To the best of my knowledge, they did it intentionally.
They've started installing all of their equipment in the area in preparation to offer FIOS to the residents of my town. In the process, they've started trying to steer people away from their DSL services.
Now, I can understand that decision from a business standpoint. As ETT said in my previous blog post on the same topic, DSL pretty much sucks. It's another signal added to your normal phone lines, except the two signals interfere with one another, and so you have to install filters on your phone lines not being used for internet access between your phone (or answering machine) and the wall jack.
So, it's a pretty bad technology to start with, but does that really mean they have to cut their current customers' service in the middle of the year's service? No. They didn't have to do that--they voluntarily chose to cut their services without warning. They also choose, habitually, I might add, to hang up on their customers when they call wondering why the service they're paying for does not work.
To be fair, no phone company (or internet company for that matter) has a good reputation, but then again they don't have to treat their customers like absolute shit.
So, Verizon, fuck you, and thanks for not providing the service we're paying for.

There have been many rants on this and stuff, and the most frequent conclusion is that ISPs only listen to money. If you call them and ask to be transferred to the cancellation department, those guys usually fix all your problems because for whatever reason they hate losing customers even though they treat them like shit.

I like how so many companies do such stupid shit. Where is the social darwinism?

I love how I just read this as "COMSAT" trying to figure out what this has to do with BW. lol

In my experience:
Verizon is evil Comcast is incompetent (sorry ETT :p)
FiOS is godly though.

Lol.
Like any big company, it depends on who you get. We have such a wide range of competency levels it's ridiculous... from the people that really know their shit, to the total fucking retards who should've never been hired in the first place.
The problem is, most the positions that actually talk to customers (either customer service reps or technicians [especially contractors]) are where you'll find 99% of the retards. Anyone who knows their stuff or is half-way intelligent moves out of those positions fast.
If it makes you feel any better, the people in positions that actually matter ARE very competent.

There has to be better ways to squeeze money out of you than to sabotage your DSL.

I can't stand my Comcast. They're nice people, but the help is terrible and there's been connection problems in my entire neighborhood for years that they still haven't identified/fixed.

Well im located in North Texas and we have almost every company you can think of. I use AT&T DSL and their customer service is awesome. Charter/Comcast cable I've heard and experienced shitty service (I had Charter for awhile) within the pass, plus cable net seems to go out every now and then and will last anywhere from an hour to a day of no service. Satellite net I have heard nothing about it other then it being hella expensive. Verizon here in my metroplex is always like 5-10 bucks more expensive compared to other competents with the same package.

Vote with your dollar and get something else (if you can...).

comcast in my neighborhood was really bad and we were getting outages all the time. so we switched to verizon fios. after that, didn't have any problems at all. it was faster too!

"Comcast wouldn't do this"
Yes they would.

Where do you live?

lol comcast sucks. they're just faster and have a near-monopoly on most places they are.
p.s. get FiOS
|
I want to get FiOS, but Verizon wants almost $50 a month for it. My family is far from rich, and my mom doesn't want to pay for it. I'm willing to pay for it, but fuck--I don't want to drop that much money.
Internet is really overpriced, in my opinion. It's like gas prices: the prices are higher than they need to be. They just want every penny they can get from you.

I'm in Ann Arbor, MI. We really don't get a choice of broadband.
I should add that I had only been home for a week when I made that last post. So far I haven't experienced any of the problems I had experienced for the past 5 years, so maybe they finally did fix it.
