I suspect initial hype, it's Star Wars after all. I'll avoid it for the first few weeks after release, wait til the hype dies down a bit and watch it after that.

From what I'm seeing, it looks like this movie delivers in a big, big way. I'm going to have to avoid the full blown reviews like the plague, but it seems like the movie is going to rate very highly.

Episode I got great reviews, just saying... Every new Star Wars film gets atleast good reviews, that is just how Hollywood rolls. You can't talk too much shit about the biggest money spinner cinema history has seen.

Just go to rotten tomatoes and read the pull quotes from their top critics. I find it gives a really good overview of most movies without details.

Episode I was decent if you remove Jarjar and the Anakin actor. And it wasn't rated that highly. I think it was given like 3 stars in general, which is about right.
It looks like Episode 7 is going to be better regarded -- both by fans and the reviewers.

nah it got 3,5 from Ebert and this was the general consens, which is heavily overrated, the film is a posterchild of mediocrity. With a bit of distance most critics would probably agree. Since its release its rating went down a bit each year. Now its rating is down to 56% @rotten. That is the overall rating it deserves I would say, took some years to get there though.

There will be three kind of reviews for this. The people who love the OT: They will be disappointed by the new movie because it won't be the same experience as watching the first star wars movie for the first time. The people who have no real experience (aka children, teens): They will love it, just like children loved the prequels The people who expect it to be bluckboster popcorn cinema: That's exactly what we will get and that's also exactly what the original movies were (and the prequels, just with more flaws). Solid movies, fun but nothing more. These are only the basic forms of viewers/reviewers. In reality it's obviously more like a spectrum.

You talk like you know stuff. Do you (aka have seen it) or don't you and just read a few one liners fron guys you don't know like the rest of us?

The whole movie plot has been known for a long time now. Since yesterday some details are more clear than before. I didn't actually see it though (which means i cannot value the quality of dialogue, cinematography [even though it looks pretty good when we only look at the trailers] and other stuff you have to watch the movie for) Still, everything i know atm makes me believe what i wrote in the post you quoted.

So, from now until I see the movie I will avoid this thread... and perhaps the internet as a whole.

If it'll be on par with the last 2 Star Trek movies by JJA I'll be very satisfied.

Very happy with the reviews we've seen so far. From what I'm reading people feel it is worthy of the OT and better than the Prequels. At worst this movie will be "good enough."
Can't wait!

Oh god I hope not. Speaking of which, they released the latest ST trailer. Looks as 'generic dumb action movie' as it gets.

That's what they get for not liking Star Trek: Into Darkness, a very good movie with nitpicks of no consequence, and forcing quite a few director changes.

So once again it's imax 3D in most theaters around here or a few in digital 2D+3D. Sigh am I the only one that can't stand 3D ? It's so ugly. Multiple times I've said I wouldn't see another movie in 3D but I accepted to see Martian in 3D after people said it was great 3D. It sucked once again with its loss of color and sharpness and annoyance of putting glasses and paying more money. Not gonna keep making the same mistake.
|
The only movie I liked in 3D was Avatar. Otherwise it just makes movies more expensive with meh results.

I opted for 2D. The 3D just adds to the box office gains because they cost 30% more.
|
Now I'd just wish imax 2d still exist...
Oh well disney+theater will get only 7$ from me.
Reviews are starting to pop on RT. Time to avoid the internet and see the movie before Christmas otherwise I'm sure I'll get spoiled at the famility reunion.

I've seen enough plot details spoiled as it is; any more and it will ruin the "first time viewing" experience. Time for internet silence for just under 48 hours until I've finished watching it.
