Luke didn't really have a clue in episode 4, he was just saving a princess and following the lead of Obi Wan, when Obi Wan died, all he had left was to follow up with the princess's war and fight in a star ship, something he's always dreamed of doing (he's also pushed into confidence when he meets his old friend Biggs). He never really knew much about the empire until Obi Wan told him small pieces about it and had witnessed it's regime like nature along the way. All he wanted to do was leave the farm, but once he joined with Obi Wan and eventually Han on the journey to Alderaan, he became a wanted criminal and couldn't look back. After the destruction of the death star, Luke becomes a certified star pilot and a commander in the Rebellion (remember they call him commander skywalker in episode V).
Now you have to consider that there was up to a year in time between the events of IV and V, the evacuation of Yavin and the construction of Hoth didn't happen over night. There were probably a number of battles on the way from Yavin to Hoth, remember that Han's ship was more than likely was damaged in the escape and why it was so faulty throughout the entire episode. It's quite possible that during these battles, Darth Vader learns about Skywalker's deeds against the empire through interrogation, because in the opening credits scene in episode V, its mentioned that Darth Vader is obsessed with Skywalker and desires to find him.
By the time Luke escapes the womba den and sees Obi Wan tell him to go to dagobah, his motives are pretty clear, learn about the force. Remember that Luke had a glimpse of a light saber duel on the death star and was also told about Darth Vader killing his father on Tatooine prior to his uncle and aunts deaths. So Luke understood that he must go through training to stand a chance against Vader, because one way or another as a leading member of the Rebellion, Leia would cross paths with Vader again and at this point in the story, Luke is starting to fall in love with her. Also, Luke can't understand R2D2, he can only talk to him through the translator in the X-Wing, his brief conversations with R2D2 on Dagobah were one way, Luke was expressing his feelings and inferring what R2D2 was saying based on already knowing the droids personality.
In episode VI, once Luke learns about his sister from Obi Wan, his motives become that of a different love, an eternal blood bond to protect ones own. He eventually uses his fear of losing leia to the emperor and turns it into anger against his father, boosting his force abilities to defeat his father. But it was clear that by the time he ended up on Endor, that his main motive was to find the good in his father and defeat the emperor. By nature, defeating the emperor would be the eventual and slow death of the empire, so confronting his father and the emperor would directly help the rebellion and thus Leia.
Considering how simplistic the whole rebel vs evil militaristic empire is I don't even think it would have fitted in the tone of the movie to have a lot of background reflexion from Luke about the struggle.
Even if Luke was on the fence about the Empire before they killed his adopted family, there is that part where they blow up a planet populated by billions of people. At that point I think we can say Luke decided that he was on board with the guys trying to stop further planets from exploding.
Hahaha man, this thread. People are overanalyzing these simple movies so much that the only possible conclusion is that every character is an idiot and every plot element is futile.

This events lead to the farmhand becoming the Knight's squire, as they embark on a quest to save the Princess from the hand of evil lord. Upon their journey they meet some unlikely companions in the form of bandits. Together they rescue the Princess at the cost of old Knight's life at the hands of Black Knight. They join her in an attempt to overthrow the tyrant and fight a costly battle against his new war machine. Later the former farmhand (now a blooded soldier and commander) has a near-death experience, resulting in him receiving a vision. This prompts him to seek out the Wise Wizard. He ventures deep into the Dark Forest to find him. The Wizard reveals to him his destiny and the truth about the tyrant - he is an evil sorcerer...
I find nothing humorous in random nitpicking that completely misses the point of what actually matters about the quality of the movie. That kind of nitpicking is definitively the domain of Star Trek fandom and should stay in that corner of the world.

I mean the comparisons with medieval knight and samurai stories is quite obvious right? Should be obvious with all the epic sword duels, the iron clad dark enemy and uh.. you know.. jedi KNIGHT and all..
